The Official Green Lantern Review Thread - Part 1

I'm going to rage hard if the movie actually sucks and fanboys still insist in seeing it 10 times each in a desperate attempt to get a sequel out of it through their personal efforts.

I know us North Americans have a way of celebrating mediocrity, but we shouldn't throw our money at crap.

Amen to that!

(this coming from an Eastern European) :p

And to this point, take this rant for instance on Youtube. The dude is saying Green Lantern HAS TO SUCCEED, or else oh NOES, we'll never see WB make other superhero movies (like Flash for instance). I left a comment pretty much voicing your point. Don't support crap. Zero tolerance! :)

how is it possible to screw up GL? HOW?! the thing practically WRITES ITSELF!

If Green Lantern is as good as Thor , I will be a happy camper . Thor was excllent fun . I love Batman but not every comic book film needs to be brooding . Batman does but different charcters need different tone

Why does this schtick alaways come up when people talk about wanting better comic book pics.

Star Trek isn't exactly a pitch-black, brooding thriller, yet it puts Thor and other Marvel Studios productions to shame. The Goonies is a fun family adventure - same - it puts those movies to shame. We don't have to accept everything the shove down our throats. They're making subpar movies. Und unless these projects are in the hands of talented writers and directors, who have a clear, specific and strong vision, that's not going to change.

@ spider-neil: Nothing writes or makes itself. You've got to have strong, passionate and talented people on these projects, who know how to adapt the material, and actually make a good MOVIE out of it.

I told you guys critics dont dig this kind of movie. I was expecting bad reviews.

I still think this is a good movie.

I wonder if Campbell confirming he won't be back for sequels has anything to do with the anticipation that this won't be good.
Judging by the reviews, it is a good thing he wont come back. Maybe they should give this to JJ Abrams or something. Someone that is more versatile with sci fi and special effects.

Calm yourself poppet.
But really, are people so ******ed they need to see a film half a dozen times before they realize it isn't any good?

That didn't answer the question of what if they like it...

Most of the reviews are just lukewarm, why is it out of the question that some people will actually genuinely enjoy it?

It isn't, I'm still on the fence about it, I doubt I'll be paying nearly 20 dollars for the full IMAX and 3d experience on opening night, but I will probably pay a flat fee of 5 dollars for a matinee at the ghetto theatre this weekend or next week.

I just remember back when people were blindly supporting Ghost Rider, and it seemed effective enough for them to go ahead and keep the same cheesy actor and probably another cheesy frigging film.

I just hate bad movies being encouraged. But yes, I still am holding out hope that the critics are just being umm... Overly critical.

All I wanna know is if this is Better than The Last Airbender lol or if this is this years TLA :csad:

No way Paramount will give JJ up.

Star Trek II is going to be huge. Heck even the Trek video game JJ is launching next year got amazing reactions at E3.

I wouldn't go THAT far.

I mean, like spider-man, GL origin is filled with conflict, drama and deep character moments, if you concentrate on that it shouldn't be possible to screw up the movie.

Despite the complaints that Reynolds seems to be imitating Downey Jr. that some of the reviewsr have made so far, from the trailers, I expected Green Lantern to be similar in tone to Iron Man, and the critics loved that film. The whole "this movie wasn't made for critics" thing doesn't really wash with me.

Obviously, one can only make their own judgments after watching the actual movie. But the tough thing for GL fans is that in a lot of cases, the simplest answer is usually the right one. A few bad reviews, or half-and-half, you could speculate on a level of misunderstanding or what have you. But as more and more bad reviews start to roll in, building to what seems for all intents and purposes to be a majority consensus.....the simplest answer is that GL is just not a good movie. And that's the hardest answer to take...because its so inescapable. Just like Elektra was a bad movie, or even Fantastic Four. Even with great potential and ingredients, you can just get bad movies, like Bonfire Of The Vanities which was based on a well-respected book, with big stars like Hanks and Willis and F Murray Abraham and Morgan Freeman (as I recall), and Brian DePalma as director. Sometimes, you just get a bad movie.

Unless there have been prior examples of movies being so ill-received out of the gate by critics but somehow getting really good word-of-mouth and repeat viewings from moviegoers....the outlook is sadly rather bleak. But despite the understandable disappointment, maybe there is some comfort to be found in that it was just a bad movie, and not some aversion to GL as a concept/character, or a sign that comic movies are consuming themselves, etc.

i am not some Cambell defender. but i would bet my life that all the problems this movie has ( if it has problems. i first neeed to see the movie) ....all hte problems are WB's fault. this was a studio movie. they forced a lot of things to make this their vision. i

Well, I think that J.J. Abrams' Star Trek puts Thor to shame. And Iron Man 2 and The Incredible Hulk aswell.

I agree about Green Lantern's origin, but you still need a great creative team to bring that successfuly to the big screen, in a movie.

Honestly, I think it's rather an editor's movie. Seems like the DC guys, and especially Geoff Johns were quite involved in the direction the movie should take. And I don't like that. Same as I don't like Kevin Feige & friends making decisions on the Marvel productions.

Why the hate for Tho. It was r was an excellent movie Better than the Batman Begins ripoff known as Iron Man

another crumb of comfort is sometimes you get movies that are so bad they're good, like predator 2, I freakng LOVE that movie :woot:

AnorexicBatman

you are usually on my don't not agree list, but I must lift the embargo on these green lantern threads.

however star trek(a film that this moive should have been greater than, equal to and like), had many a funny goofing around moment.

It's mediocre and underwhelming like The Incredible Hulk and Thor. And honestly I doubt Green Lantern is any worse than those movies. Yet people support the Marvel movies because the wake their inner fanboy, with all that crossover, mega-cinematic universe crap. They feel more like a "booth at an expo" promoting the company and its characters, rather than actual movies.

prefer IM and Thor to Star trek but that's just my personal taste.

Ditto. But, to be fair, I've always disliked the Star Trek mythology. And Abram's Star Trek did manage to at least entertain me for two hours, despite by bias.
