great scenes but ultimately the movie is let down by none existent character development, poor story structure, plot contrivance to move the story along and pacing.
green lantern suffers from the same thing, fantastic set pieces (wont list them as they are spoilers but suffers from none existent character development, poor story structure, plot contrivance to move the story along and pacing.

it's frustrating because the elements were all there to make a fantastic superhero movie.

Well why the **** did they market it as though it was gonna feature all these aliens and an epic, cosmic adventure storyline?

Lies, to fool people into going to watch it. Marketing is supposed to attract people, not flat out fool them. It's propaganda, not marketing.

I don't remember Iron Man being spoon fed anything. He learned from his experiences as a prisoner.

I don't remember Spider-Man being spoon fed anything. He just remember an old quote by his uncle, then learned by himself, what it takes to be a hero through a horrific tragedy.

Same with Thor. He was never spoon fed anything. He just realised that yes, he was an arrogant *****e bag. And he went about changing that.

Hal Jordan? He had Carol Ferris tell him exactly what the script required Hal to hear to become a hero. "You can OVERcome fear". Oh wow, he needs Carol to tell him that? Really? The idea on it's own is an interesting one. Instead of being fearless altogether, he can embrace his fear, and conquer it. I like that, it's cool. But I don't like the way he came to that realisation. Because he, Hal Hordan, didn't come to that realisation himself. He didn't learn anything. He had a girl spoon feed it all to him.

As for Jurrassic Park? Yea it is one of the best movies ever. That's why WTF moments are forgivable. Green Lantern? It's a terrible movie and such flaws cannot be forgiven.

Heroes getting spoonfed isn't anything new.

In Batman Begins, Rachel practically spoonfeeds Bruce about Gotham's problems. One minute, Bruce just wants revenge for his parents' death. One car ride and speech from Rachel, he's motivated to save Gotham and confronts Falcone. It was a bit annoying but didn't detract from the movie. Same with Green Lantern. For me, anyway.

Me and the old man are gonna go see this later for Father's Day, average reviews or not. He's collected and read this **** since he was younger, and it's Green Lantern realized, so **** it.

audience reaction
seems consistent with that other video too.

that guy at 3:54 seems to have more sense than anyone.

how would all these film really do if critics weren't telling us to like what they like etc.

1) He is the embodiment of yellow energy, and yet he was 90% black

2) At the end of the day, he was a giant mass of smoke tentacles with a head. It was a boring, uninspired concept (and the smoke tentacles just looked bizarre as hell to me). Considering he is made up of energy, the fact that he seemed to be made predominantly of smoke was perplexing to me. And while I quite liked the idea of him being comprised of corpses, we barely see this detail outside of a few closeups, so I couldn't fully appreciate it.

3) I get that he had absorbed Krona (hence taking on some of his likeness), but I just hated the design of the head.

4) I adored the concept art where Parallax looked more like an insect or deep-sea fish - and looked like he was made entirely out of raw yellow energy. So I was especially disappointed when they opted for this route instead.
I had a lot of hope when Clancy brown was cast as voice of Parralax.
I havent seen the movie yet , do any of the other Lanterns besides MS MCD AND GR exhibit any sort of personality at all?

Nope.

Finally saw it!!!

From the 1st trailer alone...I was expecting it to be bad.

Then the critics and fans destroyed it.

So I know what i'm expecting for this movie.

First, I have to let people here know my taste in superhero movies before I give my opinion in GL......

To me, Batman Begins and The Dark Knight are tops followed by Spiderman 1 and 2, Superman 1977, and Batman 89.

X-men 1 and 2, Ironman, and The Incredibles are also up there!!

So after watching GL...I was expecting this to be a B-Level super hero movie like Fantastic Four, Daredevil, Punisher, Spawn and the worst one of all, Ghost Rider.

WOW!!! I don't know what the critics are talking about!!!!

This movie rocks!!!

For me, it's better than Thor and First Class.

It kills Ironman 2, All the Superman sequels, Both Hulk movies, X3, Spiderman 3, All Batman films except Nolan's and Burton's.

Maybe the laws of Cause and Effect influenced me...putting my expectations so low by critics and trailers that when I finally saw it, GL blew my mind.

I will have to re-watch it again to see if I really liked it or not.

But as of now, here is my top 10 (LIVE ACTION) superhero ranking (Incredibles is in a different category for me)

1. Batman Begins/ The Dark Knight

2. Spiderman 1 and 2

3. Superman 1977

4. Batman 1989

5. GL and Ironman

6. X-men 1 and 2

7. Watchmen

8. Thor

9. Batman Returns

10. First Class

I don't recall them actually saying Parallax was the embodied entity of fear in this film at all. Instead it is the rebel Guardian, presumably Krona, having been overwhelmed by the yellow energy of fear and he became Parallax. More akin to Hal becoming Parallax in the aftermath of Cyborg Superman destroying Coast City than us finding out years and years later that Hal was actually infected and possessed by the Parallax entity.

Given that distinction I think there is room for them to bring back the Parallax entity in a more familiar and yellow form, as well as to introduce Ion(maybe they can introduce another Earth GL by having Ion inhabit him). I'd like to see an emergency situation that ends up with Earth as a locus(because lest we forget in the DCU and the GL mythos Earth is a locus for trouble because the White Entity is within the Earth and thus even Sinestro and his Corps gravitate to Earth, as does Nekron) necessitating the recruitment of more human GLs. Thus John Stewart and Kyle Rayner at the least, with Ion possessing Kyle.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but are there any people on this board who have seen the movie and liked it, even if it had some flaws? Or are you guys just like the jerks at **************.com?

Look at the poll at the top of the section to determine.

I really wanted to like this movie, and I went in with an open mind regardless to all the negative reviews. I left disappointed, as a majority did. As a film critic's view, I thought the movie lacked heart, story, and development. As a movie watcher, it barely entertained, just barely, and is easily forgettable, along with disappointing from all the misleading trailers.

If you want to see it just so you can say, "Oh, I saw that," I would try to see it at a rush hour showing so you don't pay full price.

one minute he is willing to charge into battle without a care who gets killed as a result the next he is washing dishes and willing to sacrifice his life so his friends can life. the hell did THAT change come from? on cosy sleepover round a camp fire?

Did you miss a large part of the movie? He didn't change at the drop of a hat. He was berated and banished by his father, told that he pretty much killed him, was no longer going to be a king, isloated from Asgard, and was humiliated when he couldn't even make the hammer budge. He also had plenty of character development scenes with Jane and Selvig. Characters he actually had great chemistry with unlike what we saw in Green Lantern. Both great actors too. Blake Lively is pretty much Jessica Alba, Kate Bosworth and Jennifer Garner--a flavors of the month with questionable acting skills put into a superhero flick to draw in more people.

I hate how people try to bring Thor down to defend other movies. Thor was ten times better than X-Men First Class (can't understand it's BB-esque reviews) and better than any other comic book movie aside from TDK, BB, and Iron Man. There is a reason it did well at the box office and with audiences.

I thought Ang's Hulk delivered on the action scenes. That 20 minute romp through the desert was better than anything in the new Hulk movie.
That romp is the first thing I think of whenever I think of the Ang Lee Hulk movie.
My only real problem with the film is that I wanted to see a more physical ending.
I wante to see the Hulk's rage unleashed.
That being said The final battle with the Abomination in some shots, looked like a video game.

Its a damn fine film . I really don't get the hate of this film

The first draft I read was the greatest super hero movie I've ever heard of, sure parallax was called Legion in it, but thats a small fault compared with everything it does right. His father had a much bigger presence like uncle ben, he had all these really poignant heart breaking scenes with his mother. He had tons of cool "Superman-type" moments like a montage of Hal saving people all over the world once he accepts his responsibility as GL intercut with scenes of Hector going the complete opposite way and using his powers to rob banks and hurt people. Oh he also RECREATED Paris on the airfield for Carol because he never took her there as GL because he never took her as Hal!

Also, the plot was waaaaay more developed. Sinestro had way more scenes that gave you an inkling of what he was to become and did it with more subtly. Not to mention there was FAR more alien action. There was a scene in the first draft where sinestro battles rookies Green lanterns with FOUR GIANT FLOATING SCIMITARS. And after he kicks their ass Tomar-Re approaches and he says "Not today, Tomar. I'm too tired to fight underwater."

The Greg Berlanti first draft marked June 8th 2008, was just sooooooo SUPERIOR to the final product I can't understand how they could take a BRILLIANT script that covered all bases and dumb it down to what we got. The script even had a Guy Gardner Cameo as the ring searched the globe over for suitable Abin-Sur replacements! And where's the scene with the giant entity of fear attacking Oa and Hal fighting it with TEN RINGS! Then him and Sinestro team up to take it on together like Batman and Robin! Sinestro with a Giant SCIMITAR (A weapon they use on Kourogar) and Hal conjuring a giant Samurai sword (Something he's wanted to be since he was a kid)

Ohhhh! And in the first draft there's no Amanda Waller, instead there's a mysterious old government dude in a suit who handles all their alien stuff, the script calls him "Pipe" because he smokes a pipe and he pretty much narrates the film and has been acting as a government liaison between the Corps and Earth...we find out at the end that its ALAN SCOTT and at the end him and Hal have a heart to heart about "Wearing Rings"

OMG...just thinking about the greatness of that script makes me want to strangle the WB and Martin Campbell. How did it ALL go so wrong?

The first draft was much better yes. Alan Scott didn't need to be there, but at least he mattered. The finale was much better too.

Hal saving Carol in the jet without the ring was a great idea. As over the top as it might have been. Although them kissing and being saved by the ring while falling is a bit cliched, the execution could have come in to make it less cheesy. And actually humorous if they fixed it. Something like tha is where the Reynolds sense of humor would have worked very well. Just think, a Hal like humorous one liner after this very intense moment. But as a Green Lantern.

Any chance of a Director's/Extended Cut??

Exactly like the scene in the first draft where he takes the plane into a coffin corner and instead of ejecting like in this movie. He passes out for a while then at the last possible second wakes up and restarts the jet and goes "Well, that was Easy" or something cool. I've been waiting for the above movie for YEARS...my heart is kinda broken. :waa:

I honestly dont think it matters because they didnt film any of those awesome scenes, so I feel a directors cut will just show us more stuff we dont care about like carol. And you know what makes me most upset? upset in a way that i wasn't with superman returns or those other xmen films, or even the lame batman movies? This is Green Lanterns FIRST TIME out the gate! The first time a lot of people will be hearing about him! You can't screw up your first appearance! I didnt care about lame superman movies because superman has had an amazing silver screen treatment that has become Iconic (here's looking at you Chris)

Green Lantern's first draft was like an updated version of the christopher reeve flicks with cool Star wars space action, and a super cool hero.

Now this definitely sounds promising.
No wonder Johns shut the door to his office this morning.
He's pissed.

Doesn't matter. Daredevil had a Director's Cut, but the infamy from its Theatrical Cut is all people going to remember it for.

And Daredevils Directors Cut was actually pretty awesome (although they kept in that horrible playground fight scene). But that movie is forever tarnished by the Tom Rothman micromanaged theatrical version.

It's futile.

Thor's Box Office take and Critic/GA approval numbers kick Green Lemon's proverbial backside.

It's not even a contest. The ones spouting that garbage have lost all credibility.
