Probably because Hal Jordan is much smaller? Parallax has a lot more mass and because of that is affected more by the sun's gravity. I mean that was the explanation given in the movie itself. For me that sounds acceptable. I mean, i hate all that whining over explanations, how something isn't logical etc. I mean this is a comic book movie, if i want something logical and totally understandable in the real world, i wouldn't go in cinemas and watch a movie about someone who has super powers, i mean for me that whole realistic thing is raping a genre.

I saw the movie earlier today and I really don't see what the problem everyone has.
From a Non Gl fan with SOME knowledge of the Character I really liked the film. It will be in my DVD library.

I think the film would have loved to had the chance to have it's audience make up their own mind about it upon viewing, but reviewers kinda put a stop to that. Shouting don't see this film because it didn't entertain me.

franchise starters need good reviews

GL will not be going into my blu collection.

reasons to buy the blu ray
* training sequence - LOVED IT!
* OA

reasons not to buy the blu ray
* terrible villians
* terrible script

if GL had two fantasitc movies and had a mistep with the 3rd (i.e. X3/SM3/blade 3/superman 3 - ha ha what is it about third movies) then I would buy GL because I would want to complete my collection but it is the first out of the gate.

What makes me upset is that the first draft was brilliant and they butchered it basically. I'm rereading it and im remember all this cool stuff like GL rescuring people in Darfur, delivering food to people in the desert, and exploding the central power batter (Which we never saw btw!) :doh:

Also, I feel like the entire message of the movie was altered, in the first draft it was pretty apparent that Hal Jordan wasn't "Afraid" of anything after his father died which is why he seemingly acts so recklessly. He only became afraid later in the script when hector uses him to kill 8 of Alan Scotts MIB's. At which point he's urged by Tom to not give up and get help or something, which prompts his return to Oa to seek back up.

That would've lead to some kick ass lantern action, but alas...they cut all the best stuff from a brilliant script.

Not as horrible as some critics are making it out to be ,but if you hit the theatre to see Green Lantern,be prepared to be served a healthy side of cheese to go along with some cool action sequences,and SFX in the film.
The best scenes take place on Oa home of the galactic guardians The Green Lantern corps.
It was fun to see some of the legion of GL's of all shapes,sizes and intergalatic races,that i have only seen in comics or while flipping through a Who's Who in the DC universe book.The training of Hal Jordan(Ryan Reynolds) on Oa was all to brief,and boy did i feel cheated.
When the film heads back to earth its beyond boring.Even though i didnt start throwing popcorn like the small kid sitting next to me,i wished the film would have picked up its pace a bit.
We get a forced love story made even worse by the zero chemistry between
Reynolds and Blake Lively as Carol Ferris.The women in the audience made several audible swoons several times over the romantic scenes ,i laughed.
Some corny and weird scenes with Hal's best friend,and a lame villain with a bulbus head named Dr. Hector Hammond(Peter Sarsgaard) Sarsgaard must have his eye on a few more million dollar ,brownstones in Brooklyn its the only reason i can come up with for taking on this silly role.
Tim Robbins( U.S. senator Robert Hammond)and Angela Bassett(Amanda Waller): add nothing to the film.Each time they popped on screen all i could see was EASY PAYDAY flashing above their heads.
Pam Grier had more to do with the Amanda Waller role in the weak Smallville T.V show.
Ryan Reynolds in real life doesnt take himself to seriously,he doesnt take this role to seriously so i didnt take hi.......well you get where im going.Not that he's horrible but its just an uneven role for him.
Mark Strong comes out on top though as Sinestro,he was just perfect.
Even with all the lame things in this film,the future films(?) have the potential to
be better than this first outing.
Scale of 1-10 a 6

You could argue that they keep the movie on earth because it would be cheaper than having the whole movie on OA, well how much did all the hector hammand scenes cost? How much did parallax assault on earth cost. Exactly the same as Thor the movie only shines when you are on Asgard or OA and I hope both movies dispense with earth because frankly Earth isn't that interesting

I could understand the logic of having Hal stay on Earth because he genuinely needs practice and should start small with Earth villains and work his way up to cosmic cop leagues. Of course, him being able to defeat Parallax where other 6 trained experienced GL's failed kinda blows that theory out of the water.

Well he could have dealt with small time alien criminals on different planets or something, like in First Flight.

I mean, it's supposed to be this vastly populated universe. Sure didn't seem like it.

News outlets are starting to question whether GL's failure at the box office (or perceived failure) is the beginning of the end for the comic movie boom :(

Looks like Cap's box office numbers just gained more importance.

They do this every time a supers flick underperforms.

There is a variety of reasons why GL has bombed. I don't think the biggest on is superhero movie burnout.

I don't think so. Thor, a franchise starter with an unknown lead did great and is on it's way to 450 mil WW. X:FC, a great movie, suffered because it didn't have Wolverine, the face and backbone of the X-Men franchise. GL would have done good too if it was not a bad movie, it got panned by critics and was massacred online for days prior to it's release.

Now Cap, I honestly don't know. It is releasing one week after Harry Potter and there is a chance it might not even take the #1 spot at the box office it's opening week.

Truth being told this is the most competitive and talent heavy summer I have seen in a long time so I wouldn't sweat it.

it felt quite cookie-cutter to me....

i'll place it on the level of Ghost Rider and F4 ,in that it was a movie,it told an origin,it had good effects,good action,some character development...but it did nothing extarordinary,and had villian(s) who didn't feel like a credible threat and were too easily (and quickly) defeated.......it did nothing to stand out...it didn't have any part,scene,or acting that stood up and said "HEY! Forget those other films!! Look at me over here!!"

just felt....bland,i guess....i didn't hate it,but i didn't pump my fist after it was over,either...

Give GL a chance. I wouldn't say it's bombed just yet.
Economy has alot to do with it or both Gl and Thor's numbers would be higher.

Economy didn't stop Avatar; when it was even worse in 2009.

I agree but at least GL is out there on film FINALLY.
The same with Thor. We've been looking foreword to some sort of appearance for YEARS.
Back when the Hulk tv movies were made, Thor was VERY close to being made a TV show to replace Hulk because Bixby's cancer. If they hadn't had Thor wanting Ale every time he passed a bar it would have made it to tv. THAT's how Close he came!

.... and I don't get that one bit .... amazing how much people will watch anything Jack Sparro.
yeah Potc was going to be a problem for both Thor and GL I thought, and I like the franchise.
