The Official Green Lantern Review Thread - Part 5

Not the prime focus? It is COMPLETELY the focus of the movie.

War on terror. Use advance weapons to kill terrorists. Or did you miss the scene where he kills a lot of people in the movie, in his first appearance?

Maybe its my problem with the movie. I hate it when they kill people, terrorists or not. Its simply ok to kill nowadays and the audience buys into that and think its AWESOME, if its done in a cool way!

No, it is not. The war on terror was part of the movie, yes. But, it's not the prime focus of what it was about. The film was about a man struggling to make up for his own sins. The war on terror was just used to show how he has sinned and what he is atoning for. Hence why the film's climax takes place in the city, and not Middle East. If the Middle East was the main focus of the film, then the story would have ended there. But, the war on terror was NOT the story.

Once again, part of the movie. Not the main focus. The main fight, where the hero must face his greatest test...takes place in California. He is fighting a man he knew his whole life who has stolen his technology and mirrors himself. If the film was about the war on terror, and this is basic writing practice, it would have ended in the Middle East. Not be a duel between rich people in armored suits.

So if Cap kills people in a war, you'll hate Cap? Also, Hal tricked Parallax in GL into going into the sun. It kills him. So...GL killed someone. Why is that okay, but Iron Man can't defend himself and others by killing very evil men? I don't see a problem with what Stark did in the desert sequence.

I prefer my heroes to be old fashioned. That's why Superman, Batman and Spidey are still the best.

Batman has murdered people in many takes on the character. Including the creator, Bob Kane.

Also, even Nolan had Batman kill people. He lets Ra's die (effectively murder if you ask me) and pushed Dent over the edge of a building, breaking his neck.

I'm pretty sure Superman and Spider-Man aren't innocent of murder either.

Spider-Man tricks villains into killing themselves then acts surprised. :o

Stark was drinking Vodka for breakfast in part 1, am I suppose to believe from part one to two he suddenly changed.

There's a big difference between someone who likes to drink and someone who needs to drink. The former can certainly develop problems over time, but the latter is an alcoholic now.

As is Tony was shown in IM1 to be the playboy party guy who likes his drink, but he was never shown to be unable to go without it.

Prior to the release of the movie the director Jon Faverau mentioned in a interview I saw that he was saying they were looking to go the route of "Demon in the Bottle". I'm guessing Marvel backed off this approach because it wouldn't be appropriate for the PG-13 rating they were aiming for.
I can understand them being hesitant. Might be something they will explore down the line if the franchise has long term legs. RDJ may have moved on from the role by then though.

Well, at least we're talking about Iron Man instead of Batman... That's a change.

Green Lantern

Superman killed in the very early stories (threw a villain into a planes propeller iirc), and post crisis he executed the 'pocket universe' Kryptonians.
Superman also killed in Singers movie: Luthor's goons were crushed as a direct result of Superman's actions (lifting the new continent)

I don't think Spider-Man has ever killed in the books. Least not directly.

Yeah, this is a totally off-topic discussion, LOL! I sowwy :csad:

Well at least we can get back on topic now.

I just saw the movie last night. I was never into the mythology of the character growing up, although I once had an action figure of him lol. I thought the movie was ok. It has many flaws, but I just know there's a good story in there somewhere.

The pros where Blake Lively (I didn't even know it was her until 45 minutes in LOL. She's really breaking away from Gossip Girl in a big way). Mark Strong, who was just utterly fantastic. Alex Sarsgaard was also very good. I've read people say he hammed it up a bit in the film, but I didn't think so at all. His performance completely served his character and the universe inwhich this story takes place in. And of course Geoffrey Rush is always brilliant.

The cons? I really like Ryan Reynolds, but he was just so bland and uninvolving as the Green Lantern. The CGI was tacky, the 3D was nonexistant, the pacing was sloppy, and I didn't know enough about these characters to really care for them. It was so "I can be a cool superhero! Watch me be cool, guys! Are you watching? I'm not cool, am I.....? :( "

I don't hate it. It's not an awful film. It's just mentally challeneged.

Peter you mean?

^No need to apologize, since you liked his performance I just wanted the right guy to get his props.

So how many people know that the Helicopter saved by race-car on a familiar looking track scene was just an advertisement for HOT WHEELS?

Fairly obvious with the Hot Wheels Green Lantern commercials.

More reviews will be coming in because green lantern has not open in some other countries yet,so scores could still change ,and it it will make more money, because it has a late opening for some countries overseas.

I saw it again because the first time my theater had a lousy sound system and a poor 3-D conversion that I saw it just in standard 2-D this time.

In my initial review I mentioned how too quick the movie seemed to be but watching it a second time it flowed just perfectly, but I can see how misleading the trailers and posters made it out like a big Star Wars epic, totally missed the boat on that one.

The fight with Parallax was still unimpressive, it was watching GL fighting a clumped up mass of human hair.

One thing I still didn't understand whether because of the editing but just how did GL know to go to the lab and try to save Amanda Waller and Tim Robbins (sorry don't know the characters name)?

I think that's a plothole. Hal didn't know about the secret base or Hector's transformation to know to follow him but bam there he is just when he's needed.

That part left me saying "WTF" too .... after about 10mins of reflection I think I came to the conclusion the ring alerted him, but it's not like it's plain as day.
