The Official Green Lantern Review Thread - Part 5

Get over yourself pal, you're not Judge Dredd and your word is not the law.

Go and look up 'opinion' in the dictionary. That's all you're offering forth, an opinion. Some of us actually like the film but we don't go shoving that down people's throats and calling them idiots if they don't like it - just like you are.

It's pretty close to law judging all things considered. Just sayin'.

Now that I think about the movie, there is another major flaw. Parallax goes to earth to kill people and so he can kill Hal. He killed Abin Sur, so why kill Hal? Lastly, his beef was with the Guardians and he wanted to wipe them out but instead he avoids Oa. He could have gone there and not only kill the Guardians but destroy the central power battery as well, it would have been really convenient for him instead of seemingly wanting to kill a Green Lantern. One by one. Parallax acted as if he never got rid of Abin Sur. However, it could be assumed that Parallax wanted to kill Green Lanterns just to be on the safe side. It can also be assumed that Parallax went after Green Lanterns that aren't Abin Sur due to a lack of understanding pertaining to how the power ring exactly functions.

I think someone said (coulda' been Parallax itself) that once he consumed the fear on Earth, he'd be powerful enuff to go after OA.

I got the idea that Parallax only knew about Earth from sensing Hector, and realized it would be good to stock up on power before a full on assault of Oa.

Crap, it sounds like I'm going to have to watch the movie again to catch that part...

It would have been nice if the movie explained in what regard would Parallax be more stronger by obtaining more souls from people. Has comic book Parallax always basically been a bad space creature just for the sake of it?

You didn't see the intro? He was just a Guardian until he consumed those people. Then he became the energy cloud. He got bigger as the movie went on (when he ate more people).

Yet the GL Corp does nothing as he tries to consume Earth. Thank God for young, Caucasian, human, male Hal Jordan. Other species are too incompetent to think of creative ways to deal with Parallax! Only a white man can do it!

I know, but still...I just don't see how it makes him more of a powerful enemy. Actually I guess that it would just make it more easier for him to kill people (by having more souls than he has that is).

He's an entity that feeds on the souls of the fearful. I don't understand what you don't get. It's just like everything else, it consumes what it's supposed to consume and grows in size and energy.

In my case you could say that movie Parallax needs to be more of a threat by being more physically active. If movie Parallax was written as a better villain then I wouldn't have a problem with him at all.

Awesome

That's definitely the reason the movie gave .... HOWEVER it makes little sense given that Parallax was on the war path to Oa before he even knew about Hal with the ring on. So his explanation that he wasn't powerful enough yet and needed to wreak havoc on Earth doesn't jive.

You mean launching a pathetic green fishing net wasn't crafty enough to stop Parallax?

Abit late to the party I know however I was out last night & just happened to catch a showing of GL, a film I was probably gonna just wait till DVD to see even though I thought it looked cool.

I have to say I'm quite disappointed with the films poor box office showing, the main reason being is that it seems like the type of franchise that had it got over the first hurdle of a debut film fairly comfortably that it would only grow & potentially get better with further films with more characters & more worlds to explore.

As for this film, I didn't mind it. I've never been that into Green Lantern & a few years ago I said rather bluntly that I didn't think that there would ever be a live action Green Lantern film because the character isn't popular/well known enough. After seeing the film though it has perked my interests in seeing more of Green Lantern & Green Lantern's universe. Seems more entertaining in live action than any other media I've seen the character in.

This is one of those cases that the villian irritated me, mainly Parallax. In one sequence we see him easily destroying 6 or 7 other of (according to Sinestro) the Green Lantern Corps finest warriors with ease & the best they can come up with is a fishing chain like thing & a few light blasts.. then we see 1 Green Lantern who has had the ring for less than a week manage to prevent Parallax from disposing of him in the same way & also manage to defeat him.. that was annoying. Not to mention the refusal of Sinestro or anyone else to try & help him.. even when he had the thing nearly beat. Although they did stop him from floating into the sun..

I mean they built him up so well & then the final sequence kinda let things down with Hal 'easily' disposing of him/it.

I also felt too much was jammed into the film, the main villian (& I'm not too familiar with GL villians) should have been something either a little closer to home (Hal's character) or something easier explained than Parallax. Batman's villian in Batman Begins was a character that actually was heavily involved in Bruce Wayne/Batman's origin.. & although the film isn't a success yet, Superman's villian in Man of Steel will be Zod &/or Lex Luthor, 2 characters again that are important to the characters origin/roots which is probably what that story will be based around as well.

At the end of it all I thought the film was alright, didn't blow my mind & didn't let me down badly. Even though I hear WB saying they are pressing on with a sequel, I think it will turn out to be ********. The return from their investment might just about break even at the end, dvd sales, final box office results etc.. but even if it manages to break even, I can't see them risking another sizable budget on the film if it wasn't given a good reception. Which is a pity because the film has kinda made me like the GL character more & I'd go see a sequel.

A good idea might have been to try & tie this film into Superman's world if not Batman's for any potential JLA film.. then I suppose it would raise the question where exactly was Superman when this force that could wipe out worlds was terrorising whatever city that was it was terrorising... then again he was defeated & removed so easily & quickly by Hal he probably wouldn't have been quick enough to get there.. and why didn't Batman have some sort of alien defense system in place to take this thing out.. :awesome:

It was vengeance. He wanted to kill Abin Sur (his jailer) and any of his successors (this in no different than General Zod wanting to have all of heirs of the house of El bow down to him). He also wanted to destroy Oa, but Parallax knew he wasn't powerful enough. That's why he wanted to destroy Earth and absorb the fear from it's population. He figured that by doing that he would be strong enough to take on the rest of the corps and the Guardians.

Again that's not the case. Parallax was on his way to Oa to destroy and the Guardians before he even knew about Hal. So having him suddenly say he needing to destroy Hal and Earth was a horrible plot issue. I mean c'mon he dispatched 6 GL's like little mosquitos and sent Sinestro home with piss in his green uni (the real reason he wanted the yellow ring was to cover it up :awesome:). He was ready.

This.

The excuse that he was going to Earth to get revenge or increase his power is bullcrap, since he got his revenge by KILLING the person who trapped him already, and he was already going to Oa, so it's obvious that he didn't think he needed more power.

The reason he went to Earth was because that's what was in the script. The very, very poorly written script.

I can't believe WB thought they could get away with promoting it as a space epic with less than a third of the movie being in space.

It is possible that Parrallax was so busy consuming Souls he didnt realize he had consumed the screenwriters before the finish of the third act and he had to make it up as he went along.

Nah, then the movie would have a satisfying ending battle. He'd have actually attacked Oa and the Corps would actually do something apart from stand there and exist.

But by then Parallax and Hal's suit had consumed the budget, since despite having a high budget, they apparently couldn't afford a good CGI studio for a hero who's powers are literally completely visual effect based.

I finally got around to see this (Late I know!) But after it's all said and done, it's definitely NOT as bad as people made it out to be. There's not way this thing should have a 26% on RT. It's not worse then F4:ROTSS.

The biggest complaint I have of this movie is that the main characters are just too underdeveloped. Like others have said, Jordon's journey overcoming fear is very rushed, and not addressed very well at all, the other guardians are barely characters, and from watching this film, I would have thought Hal and Hector were only casual acquaintances instead of supposedly growing up together (didn't get that at all.)

The most frustrating thing about the film (like Wolverine Origins, but this was better then Origins) is that you can really see how there could have been a very good film here. The script just needed lots of work. Worry less about trying to set this up to be a franchise film, and just worry about telling a good story. They were close. I'd say this film was mediocre. I'd give it a 6/10 probably. I enjoyed myself.

I just wish Ryan Reynolds would get a quality superhero script to act in. The guy could be very good. He was good as Hal. I would have loved to see him in a better script.
