X-Men The Official MCU X-Men News and Discussion Thread

I think I most agree that we need to keep the roster limited, but I think I’d go with this:

- Cyclops
- Jean Grey
- Storm
- Wolverine
- Iceman
- Beast

Jubilee is the new recruit, with Angel as a supporting character (and former X-Man). I’d tie Warren’s father’s company to the Sentinel program, and he ultimately rejoins at the end.
Add Gambit to that list and I'd heartily agree. :)

I'm curious to see how big the initial line-up will be? Going just off the first Avengers and GOTG, 5-6 members seem like the soft spot when compared to the Eternals introducing 10 new characters.

That said, my line-up would probably look something like this:

Cyclops
Jean Grey
Storm
Jubilee
Iceman
Beast
I think 6 field team members is fine for the first film, and you can boost the numbers by including some students in the background like Jubilee/Kitty/Iceman. I think it’s good to see it from their point of view too, which would likely be a pretty scary one.

My 6 starting picks would be Cyclops, Storm, Jean, Beast, Rogue and Psylocke for a female heavy team which would help differentiate to Avengers, JL and prior film X teams. Also some supporting characters within the mansion can be mutants like Forge/Sage the resident techs and Cecilia Reyes the resident doc. They wouldn’t need an arc or huge role but could enrich the background while paying significant fan service rather than having unknown humans in those roles.

Forge should be a shoe-in, as he could be the tech specialist of the team. Sage, if they need an IT specialist. And Cecilia Reyes, as the resident physician. These three would be useful even if they don't do action/fight scenes.
Ha, you mentioned the same 3 supports as me (Forge, Sage and Cecilia)

I think they should be everpresents from the first film who don’t play huge roles and so can feature without contributing to overloading. Kind of like how M, Q, Moneypenny feature in Bonds without taking much screen time.

Yes definitely.

The recent comics have also used them in those roles, instead of not using them. I think they Marvel Studios could do the same thing. Even if they don't have a large role in the movies, I think people would appreciate them overtime. Medical assistance, tech assistance and weaponry are must haves in any battle.

Sounds good to me. :)

Characters who haven't appeared in live action:
Forge, Thunderbird, Sunfire, Marrow, Sage, Mimic, Changeling, Rachel, Joseph, Nate Grey, Hope, Longshot, Maggott, Synch, Monet, Husk, Trinary, Elixir, Hellion, Surge, Armor, Rockslide, Stacy X
Besides the characters from the Gifted, I have to point out that Monet did technically appear as a main character in the 1996 "Generation X" TV movie, even though clearly nobody remembers or likes it.

It's characters like that and even the likes of Moira MacTaggert that would make the X-Men universe feel lived in for me beyond just the leads. I really hope they are in from the beginning

I don't think I finished the Gifted - must have had things come up and then forgot. Was it worth finishing? (would probably have to rewatch having forgot it all). Don't remember being too impressed at the time lol.

I'd like to see some characters like M, Armor, the Stepford Cuckoos down the line. If we get Emma Frost also as part of the background at the Hellfire Club that could all come together once she makes the switch and sets up her school.

The shows are easy to forget, so I'm not even sure if Marvel Studios are even considering what happened there. It's really the Fox movies, that they need this reboot to differentiate from.

I don't think we are only getting six members in the first movie. The X-Men are quite different from the Avengers and the Guardians. The Avengers had 4 members which headlined their own film which at the time was impressive, plus two who didn't get a solo movie (pre-2012) and Nick Fury. Guardians aren't expansive as the X-Men which you could only handpick about a dozen essential members to the Guardians. While the X-Men, there about 90+ different members which span over 6 decades of comic book history. Unlike the Avengers, not a lot of X-Men can/should headline a solo movie as well.

I think the number would be closer to the Eternals. With so many iconic X-Men, I just don't see how they are going to limit the first X-Men movie in 8 years, with just six members. Storm, Cyclops, Jean and Professor are probably going to be included, but we also saw them in the last X-Men movie (Dark Phoenix). I can't see them just adding two more. And let us salivate for new members to show up in X-Men 2 which could take another 4 years.

I don’t count Xavier or students, assuming they won’t be leads in the film. In the same way we don’t count Nick Fury, Maria Hill, Coulson etc, but the equivalents of those characters in an X-Men film can be other X-Men who are supporting characters and don’t take the field in a significant way.

Like Warren Worthington could be relevant outside of being affiliated with X-Men. Emma Frost can be present at the Hellfire Club not making the move to X-Men till a good few years later. I doubt they will go crazy on the field team numbers in the first film but once successful it’s fine to add a few more with every subsequent (some organically from within the mansion, some story-related) so that we get pretty much all the highest profile characters by film 3 and have a school to feature all the lesser known younger characters.

Someone mentioned in the last page that Warren should be a former member. We haven't seen Warren as a member of the X-Men in a movie, and I wouldn't be content if he's shown as less than a member of the team, for the third time. The thought of what if he's in the team now rather than later (again) is not a good idea imo.

Even though I can see why people don't count Nick/the Professor, they were the key part of assembling the team so I count them and Xavier is X-Men. Whereas Maria/Phil can easily be seen as "others/different category". When it comes to the X-Men, since they aren't expansive or operates as a big entity compare to Shield - if we see Cecilia, Sage and Forge in the movie with their X-Men outfits on, they would be seen as defacto members. Those three should probably join the team on the Blackbird for emergency, instead of just staying at the mansion.

Also, marketing wise, the more mutants they show, the more it will feel bigger. I'm just hoping they know how to showcase 8 to 10 members in more or less 2 hours. Eternals did okay in terms of introducing the Eternals but there were still a lot of exposition needed which hurt that film. But the X-Men imo, are easier to introduce especially if all of them are living in the mansion already and working as X-Men.

How likely is it we will see Prof. X have a picture of the OG lineup of Cyclops, Jean, Beast, Angel, and Iceman in his office and they'll explain how Warren left after he injured his wings or something?

Well…they would have to cast all those people and the new team members as well. So maybe eventually? But almost certainly not right away.

Unless they do a Disney+ series which would rock

Standins and they retroactively replace them with the actual actors later.

It was okay. The Inner Circle stuff wasn't great. But they did do some great stuff with the Purifiers, very relevant. Ended with an unresolved cliffhanger, sadly.

I’d love to see that. Maybe they could do younger versions for the pic and not properly zoomed in/masks for Scott & Jean/Iceman iced up/Beast in beast form to avoid committing. I guess probably better to wait though.

It was alright. I don't know how much you watched, but I think the latter half of the first season was where it was probably at its strongest. If you want to see the Stepford Cuckoos I would recommend you watch more of it though.

Probably before the first half of the first season so that's good to hear. If the Cuckoos are in I have to watch. Always thought they could be super-interesting in live action and a taster will do for now, thanks!

Oh that’s a clever idea

I'm not wild about either, but what do I know? Anyone is an upgrade from Kinberg.

Kinberg will be an Executive Producer. :o
