Playstation The Official Playstation 5 Thread

From the wording on the PS5 Slim packaging, it sounds like the online check-in only needs to be performed the first time the system's external disc drive is installed, which should allow for completely offline play afterward. But that could still cause difficulties for players with unreliable Internet connections or those setting up a system in remote locations.

The online check-in could also prove to be a headache for future preservationists if and when Sony decides to shut off its Disc Drive syncing servers in the future. But recent gaming history suggests that doesn't necessarily need to be a long-term problem. After researchers found a hardware battery-based "kill switch" in aging PS4 and PS4 systems in 2021, for instance, Sony updated the PS4 firmware to ensure those consoles would continue to work even with a dead backup battery. And after players discovered that many older Xbox games required a one-time online check-in before being played on an Xbox Series X, Microsoft quietly updated its firmware after determining that "the online compatibility check isn't needed in the vast majority of cases for Xbox One discs."

A similar update could eventually remove the requirement for online registration of PS5 Slim disc drives in the far future. For now, though, you'd better make sure you have an Internet connection ready before you plan to hook up a new PS5 disc drive.

I guess if you're in an area with no internet besides your cellphone, try to do a wifi hotspot with your phone.

Hmmm. Well at this point, if you're buying a gadget in 2023, a wifi connection is just a requirement. I got a new phone last month and sorting all my online accounts almost overwhelmed me.

It's onerous that they require it but that ship has sailed. And gone down somewhere in the middle of the ocean never to return. Things are only going to get worse with digital only games in the future. We've already seen it happen. Now they are moving onto hardware.

Is it onerous though? Every time I use my Playstation, my wifi is automatically connected. Even if I don't play games that need an internet connection.

I don't fully understand what the instruction said, but I'm assuming its a 1 time thing, that the user needs to have a wifi for the disc drive to function and be connected to the console. Its not like we are going to fill up a registration form, qr scan a code, do several account confirmation via our email address/mobile number and type in a password.

Jaffe’s sources told him that Sony pinned the entire blame on Producer Connie Booth and fired her, as well as the vast majority of people who worked under her. Additionally, he mentioned that Head of PlayStation studios Herman Hulst was in favor of cutting off all of the Japanese studios. He also pointed out that his contact wasn’t a big fan of Hulst.

Not a good look for Sony and i agree that the focus on GAAS is not a good idea imo.
Im worried for the future because there are many good studios and games in the pipeline of sony.
I fear that these will get derailed and lose quality once Sony starts their GAAS move fully.

A lot of their games for service could just come and go just like Destruction AllStars, and they'd go back 100% to what really worked in the past.

God of War 6
Horizon III
The Last of Us Part 3
Wolverine
Spider-Man 3
Ghost of Tsushima 2
New ip (single player) from Bend Studio
New ip (single player) from BluePoint
New ip (single player) from NaughtyDog

Those are just some potential PS5 games for the neXt 5 years and I think I'm good with those. I think VR has no future even with cloud gaming as you still need to buy an eXpensive headset. So I'd be surprised if PSVR2 gets a successor.

I kind of want all the new PS GAAS titles to bomb like crazy and see a 100% failure rate so that they eventually decide it's not worth allocating so much of their resources to it.

Just having lineups like the above is going to get most gamers very excited, and maybe the extra money they need can come from pc sales.

VR will remain niche until your average person can afford everything required for it. I love the idea of it but can't see it taking off until prices come down a lot.

I wouldn't mind if it was say 20% of the total budget but the planned rise to 60% is just too much. How many awesome single player projects could they have funded with that? :csad: It's already painful that we're going to have such a large gap between Naughty Dog single player games with all this time wasted on Factions.

I would be more open to live service, if its like free-to-play like Fall Guys.

Especially since the GAAS market is far riskier it seems.
More than half of the GAAS games dont make it long.

Raising the budget for them this much, is crazy.

I know im beating the dead horse constantly on this, but a good example is WB on this.
Forced WBM and Rocksteady into live service games when both had the absolute potential for banger Single Player games.
One game didnt even manage to start its Live Service run, the other had to be delayed for what? 7-8 months because people reacted this negative towards it.

They're gambling on one making it big and funding all the rest lol. I just hope they don't get that one so that they give up on this route and reroute all those funds back to their excellent single player studios.

Rocksteady and Naughty Dog are examples of 2 absolutely top tier studios that have been heavily affected by this dumb GAAS focus. I don't want to see any other top devs suffering with this ****.

Sounds like PlayStation will be doing some restructuring of PS including cutting some jobs at Bungie after delayed titles.

Just found this:

Which is crazy because the risk is far greater on that then when you do Single Player games.
Sure you can throw stuff on the wall hoping it sticks with GAAS, but it can crash harder than anything because you need to prepare Servers etc and that costs a ton.

Yup...i will absolutely cry when the Suicide Squad game fails and they destroy Rocksteady because of it.
So much potential in this studio.

God damn them.
Cutting Jobs in one of the most profitable gaming years...is evil.
Shame on them and every big company that makes huge profits and fires people.

I've played 3 live service games that have recently closed which were good and still had to close. How much chance does an average or bad one have in that case?! Even more so if they aren't available on all platforms. They are chasing the mega-money which the few top GAAS games get year after year, but the chances of success are minuscule as even those players who only play those don't want tons of GAAS games to play at the same time.

I just hope those going all in with GAAS get a bloody nose and go back to doing what's been working well all this time. If console exclusive games need to make more money make them available on pc with top quality ports and you'll make a ton more without the costs of a whole new game.

Yikes. i never got the big deal when Sony acquired them and here we are now...
They got them to head up their GAAS assessment division when they're struggling with their own one. I wonder what relations between them and Naughty Dog are like right now. And Destiny would be a continuous moneymaker, but not a good sign if they're losing players. Also paying up an extra billion or so to retain key staff is only going to pay off if they keep everyone for the full term IMO. I doubt they will deliver on what their inflated purchase price would have predicted if they are downscaling.

The thing that angers me the most is that this again it leadership failing and not having to suffer the effects of it.
Like, the employees literally begged them to let them do the changes to win back players.
They were listening to the feedback and were determined to get it there...but leadership said no.

And what the end of th story? Employees fired but not one person on top of the company is let go.
Absolutely disgusting.
Like, this year 6000 people have been fired...how many of them were the decision makers?
Not many and surely not enough.

No, the ones who make bad decisions are the ones who keep their job and their huge salary.
Its the hard working people as usual that get cut when leadership fails.

Those in power making decisions and consistently getting them wrong or getting important ones wrong should be the first to go. That means an issue higher up. We've had senior managers fired at our place. Some companies are dysfunctional at the exec level and it will hurt them over time if they stay like that.
