Shantae: Risky’s Revenge Director’s Cut Is Ready For Wii Us This Week. March 21, 2016 . 10:30am

Shantae: Risky’s Revenge Director’s Cut sends Shantae out to foil Risky Boot’s heist on the Nintendo Wii U.
[YT]xpW9mQ_c-78[/YT]
Both North America and Europe will see the return of our favorite genie this week. The Nintendo Wii U eShop in both regions will be getting the Shantae: Risky’s Revenge Director’s Cut this week on March 24, 2016. It’ll be $9.99/£6.99/€9,99.

Shantae: Risky’s Revenge Director’s Cut is an updated version of the second game in the series. After Risky Boots the pirate crashes Scuttle Town’s Relic Hunters Expo and steals Uncle Mimic’s lamp, Shantae finds herself fired. That doesn’t stop her from setting out to collect the three seals needed to keep Risky Boots from using the lamp’s power. As she goes on her journey, she’ll eventually learn to transform into an elephant, mermaid, and monkey.

Originally released on the Nintendo DSi as a DSi Shop exclusive, the Shantae: Risky’s Revenge Director’s Cut version of the game came to Windows PCs in 2014, the PlayStation 4 in 2015, and now the Nintendo Wii U in 2016. This iteration has a new Warp System that makes it easier to traverse the game, as well as an unlockable Magic Mode. Magic Mode gives Shantae a new costume and reduces her magic consumption at the cost of half the defense ordinary Shantae enjoys.

Shantae: Half-Genie Hero Gets New Promo Art, Starts Vote For Rival Genie Design. May 9, 2016 . 8:30am

In a recent Kickstarter update, WayForward shared some new promo art for Shantae: Half-Genie Hero,
which you can check out in the above image, as well as information on a vote for a rival genie design.

In a recent Kickstarter update, WayForward shared some new promo art for Shantae: Half-Genie Hero, which you can check out in the above image, as well as information on a vote for Shantae’s rival genie.

They also mention working towards releasing a physical version of the game.

Here’s some more information from WayForward on the rival genie design vote:
It’s time for another vote! Remember that “Fire and Forget” Stretch Goal you all funded into existence? In that storyline, Shantae gets REPLACED as Scuttle Town’s Guardian Genie. To make matter’s worse, her replacement is snotty, stuck up, and none too easy to get along with. So – what’s this new genie going to look like? You can see all three of Matt’s rough sketches above, along with the cleaned up in-game sprite designs below. Which one strikes your fancy? Vote by clicking the link right here, and make your selections by May 13th, 11:59pm PDT. Let’s get voting!

Additionally, the developer revealed that it is in talks to create a physical release of Shantae: Half-Genie Hero.
We’ve received a ton of requests for physical versions of Shantae. Thing is, WayForward is a game developer and a digital publisher – but not an authorized retail publisher. In order to make physical copies of our games for stores, or distribute games in certain countries, console manufacturers require us to work with an authorized publishing partner. You’ve seen us do this before; Square Enix published LIT for WiiWare in Japan, Capcom distributed the original Shantae cartridge in the US, and more recently Intergrow released the boxed version of Pirate’s Curse in Japan for Nintendo 3DS.

Due to the success of Half-Genie Hero’s Kickstarter campaign – and the positive support from fans and press – we’ve been able to enter into discussions with top tier publishers to do the same for Half-Genie Hero. We’re extremely excited about this, but we also recognize that this might raise some questions from our Backers. So, here’s what you need to know!

WayForward is the game’s primary publisher, same as always. You’ll still receive your download codes from WayForward, along with all of the Backer Exclusive content.

The game’s content will not be impacted by this. Partners will be given a license to distribute the finished game as-is.

Any extra work required for these ports will be covered by the distribution partners, not taken from your pledges.

Please understand that WayForward is not the distributor of the physical versions, so we can’t offer backers any boxed copies.

Shantae: Half-Genie Hero will release for PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Wii U, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.

Published 6 hours ago. 83 comments.
All three new indie titles playable at E3 2016.

XSEED Games has announced a trio of independent games it will publish in the North American market in the coming months.

The new titles include physical and digital edition of WayForward Technologies’ crowdfunded Shantae: Half-Genie Hero for PlayStation 4, PS Vita, and Wii U, Touhou Project fan series game Scarlet Curiosity for PlayStation 4, and Exile’s End from Magnetic Realms and Marvelous for PlayStation 4, PS Vita, and Wii U. All three titles will be playable at E3 from June 14 to 16.

Get the full lineup below.
Shantae: Half-Genie Hero (PS4, PS Vita, Wii U)

Due out digitally and physically this fall

In the magical world of Sequin Land lives Shantae, a spirited young half-genie. She has dedicated her life to defending her home of Scuttle Town from evil in all forms, and has been called upon again as pirates attack! Using her trademark Hair-Whip Attack and special ability to transform herself into various kinds of creatures by way of magical belly-dancing, she must fight her way through steamy jungles, ancient ruins, and stormy deserts to topple the villainous Barons behind each criminal caper, preparing for the ultimate showdown against her arch-nemesis: the bodacious buccaneer Risky Boots!

After three successful outings, Shantae is ready to embark on her first full HD adventure in Shantae: Half-Genie Hero for PS4TM, “PSVita”, and Wii U. Vibrant, high-definition sprites complement the excellent action-packed exploration and platforming the series is known for. As Shantae masters her transformative powers, old stages can be explored again to unearth new items and secrets, ensuring there’s plenty of content for casual players and platforming gurus alike!
XSEED Games will be publishing Shantae: Half-Genie Hero physically on all three announced platforms this fall, as a special “Risky Beats” retail release packaged with a musical selections CD containing over 20 songs from the game’s soundtrack, and each offered at a suggested retail price of $29.99.

Touhou: Scarlet Curiosity (PS4)

Due out digitally this fall

Immortality can be boring. At 500 years old, the so-called “Scarlet Devil,” Remilia Scarlet, is desperately searching for something new to end the monotony. After stumbling upon a newspaper article about a powerful, mysterious monster terrorizing the countryside, she rushes out to see if this could finally be the excitement for which she yearns. Unfortunately, not only is she unsuccessful in her search for the monster, but she returns to find her manor in ruins. It would seem the monster has come to her! With a renewed sense of determination (and a much-needed respite from her boredom), she vows to take revenge on this fiend and make it pay!

Set in the ever-evolving Touhou Project universe, the fan-created Touhou: Scarlet Curiosity trades in the series’ top-down “bullet hell” roots for an action RPG approach, drawing inspiration from series such as Ys while still retaining a distinctly indie feel . Players take the role of the titular vampire, Remilia Scarlet, or her devoted maid, Sakuya Izayoi, as they explore a wide variety of environments and battle aggressive creatures. Fast-paced combat and the series’ trademark complex patterns and waves of projectiles will keep players on their toes as they fight to retake Scarlet’s manor!

XSEED Games will be publishing Touhou: Scarlet Curiosity digitally on the PlayStation Store for PS4 later this fall. More information will be provided in the coming months.

Exile’s End (PS4, PS Vita, Wii U)
Due out digitally this summer

In the distant future, mega-corporation Ravenwood exists more as an interplanetary government than a company, controlling commerce and manipulating the economy with its own private army. So when its president’s son goes missing on a remote mining planet and all contact is lost, the company quickly dispatches a team of mercenaries to investigate. Immediately upon their arrival in orbit, however, the team’s ship experiences an electrical failure and careens toward the surface. Numerous soldiers eject from the crashing ship via escape pods, but only one seems to make landfall relatively unscathed: an old, embittered private named Jameson. In his efforts to restore communications on the planet, he ends up discovering the remains of the mining colony and learns a truth far more sinister than he ever could have imagined…
A dark and futuristic 2D sidescroller offering adventure-style puzzles, exploration-driven platforming, and dangerous extraterrestrials, Exile’s End is part Metroidvania and part “cinematic platformer,” drawing heavy inspiration from classics of the genre like Out of This World and Flashback: The Quest for Identity. Boasting uniquely stylized animated cutscenes, multiple endings, and an atmospheric soundtrack by Keiji Yamagishi of Ninja Gaiden and Tecmo Super Bowl fame, players who take up Jameson’s mantle will find themselves investigating a massive, interconnected alien world as they solve the mysteries of a dark, underground complex and experience a story filled with ancient riddles and modern-day hubris. Backed by Japanese publisher Marvelous Inc., Exile’s End is a collaboration between Tokyo-based indie game developer Matt Fielding and many talented local industry veterans, and a partial remake of Fielding’s first game, Inescapable, that significantly expands on its general ideas and themes.
XSEED Games will be publishing Exile’s End digitally on the PlayStation Store for PS4 and PS Vita, as well as on the Nintendo eShop for Wii U later this summer. More information will be provided in the coming months.

Shantae: Half-Genie Hero Will Have A New Game Plus And 10 Transformations. October 19, 2016 . 9:00am

WayForward is still testing Shantae: Half-Genie Hero and doesn’t have an exact release date beyond Q4 2016 yet,
but the game will offer a New Game Plus feature, 10 transformations for Shantae, and an larger art gallery.

19 comments Read >

WayForward has released an update on Kickstarter that addresses many questions people may have about Shantae: Half-Genie Hero, the latest entry in the Shantae series headed to the PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Nintendo Wii U, Xbox One, and PC. The most important bit is the part regarding the release date. The developer is targeting Q4 2016, as the game is still in testing and hasn’t been submitted to Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony. After testing is complete and it is submitted, a reliable release date will be announced.

However, Shantae: Half-Genie Hero is far enough along that WayForward has begun talking about some of the extra features people will find in the gme. To start, there will be a New Game Plus, with the developer referring to speedrunners getting “some kind of treat for completing the game quickly.” Shantae is going to have 10 forms in the game, 11 including Tinkerbat, instead of one transformation for each of the five chapters. Her magical attacks, like Bubble Shield, Fireball, Pike Ball, and Storm Puff, can all be upgraded. Fast travel options will be available, via calling Giga Wrench with a bird whistle or using the Warp Dance to go between a world’s stages. Finally, the Scuttle Town Art Gallery will have over 100 pieces of artwork you can unlock, with a reward for collecting them all, instead of the over 50 images originally sent in by Kickstarter backers.

The Shantae: Half-Genie Hero Kickstarter launched back on September 4, 2013, and 18,558 backers contributed $776,084 to help WayForward reach its goal to create the PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Nintendo Wii U, Xbox One, and PC game. While Shantae: Half-Genie Hero still doesn’t have a release date, people interested in the series will be able to physical copies of the PlayStation 4 versions of Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse and Shantae: Risky’s Revenge at 10am ET/8am PT on October 28, 2016 at Limited Run Games.

Author’s Note: I backed Shantae Half-Genie Hero on Kickstarter for $60
TitleShantae: Half-Genie HeroDeveloperWayForwardPublisherWayForward, XSeedRelease DateDecember 20th (PS4, Steam), December 27th (Wii U)GenreAdventure, PlatformerPlatformSteam, PS4, Wii UAge RatingRating PendingOfficial WebsiteI got into the Shantae series back with the second entry, Risky’s Revenge. I had no idea what to expect, but quickly became a fan of this quirky little series. That appreciation grew even more robust when I tried out Pirate’s Curse, which introduced Metroidvania aspects to the game seamlessly, and seemingly improved upon every clunky aspect from the previous games. Which brings us to Shantae: Half-Genie Hero. This entry is unique, both because it was the first crowdfunded entry in the series, as well as the first HD prequel. I wasn’t sure how I felt about the graphical switch, since it saw the original sprites totally reworked, but the new style grew on me over time. The question is, did Shantae: Half-Genie Hero provide the ultimate Shantae experience? Or did it take a couple of unlikely dance steps backward?

The newest adventure starts with a perplexing dream where Shantae is informed of some nebulous threat to the realms of both man and genie by some talking cloud of light. She wakes up, only to find her nemesis Risky Boots is up to no good again, and the good half genie sets off to stop her! The first level is a docks area beset by hordes of Tinkerbats, and it really does an amazing job of showing off how incredible the series looks in HD. The graphical switch allows the talented artists to show off so much more detail that it reminds me of a beautifully rendered classical cartoon, and I couldn’t be happier. Colors are more vibrant, and every part of the world is just more alive than usual. It’s a real treat for the eyes, as you can see from the first boss screenshot below. Oh, and let me gush for just a second on how amazing the soundtrack in the game is. Every Shantae game has great tunes, but this one really outdoes itself, and though I lack the vocabulary to really express my love of the music, you’re sure to enjoy it immensely.
Whatever you do, don’t call it P.O.O.P.T.O.O.T.!

Stylistically, the gameplay in Half-Genie Hero is a bit of a retro backtrack, for both good and bad. While the last game was a deft Metroidvania, with lots of gradual progression and seamless exploration, this game hearkens back to Risky’s Revenge. What that means, for those unfamiliar, is that Half-Genie Hero is comprised of a linear level structure interspersed with fetch quests to unlock the next area. While that design is okay in theory, it was also the thing that frustrated me the most about both Risky’s Revenge and Half-Genie Hero.
Can you be a wee bit more specific?

When you are forced to find items just to progress, and all you have to guide you are vague, albeit helpful, hints, it can be incredibly frustrating when you are lost and forced to spend a lot of time searching. This happened a couple of times in my playthrough, which lasted about five hours and change, but both times I was wandering for upwards of an hour. The most frustrating incident was when I knew I needed an item in the Mermaid Falls, and that I needed my Mouse transformation to find it. Since the mouse can use tiny holes in the wall to travel to hard-to-reach places, I thought it would be a simple matter of finding one hole and voila. Instead, the giant Mermaid Falls is littered with false starts and secondary paths, and I totally missed the one entrance I needed until I stopped and retraced my steps, carefully looking at each inch of the stage. This was the one time that the HD nature of the game worked against it, since there is so much more real estate they can cram into each area, meaning when you get lost, you get lost for a lot longer. That said, the HD really does shine, as each level is composed of multiple sections, and each level is totally distinct from each other. Ranging from mechanical factories to blazing docks to derelict deserts to even haunted houses and magical carpet races, there is a lot to love for fans of the series.
Transformations are as fun as ever, and much more diverse.

The combat itself is fast and frantic as ever, and you have a ton of side weapons at your disposal, such as fireballs, pike balls, scimitars, bubble shields and much more. All it takes is some hard-earned cash to get it from the hub area of Scuttle Town. I also appreciated that many of the standard enemies don’t go down in one hit, and take repeated hair whips to bring to heel. Also, even though the Metroidvania emphasis is toned down, you can still find artifacts and extra heart containers to help yourself out, including some utterly marvelous new transformations. While you are still able to try standbys like the wall-crawling monkey and hard-hitting elephant, there are new ones like the adorable sea-faring crab, high-flying harpie, creepy spiderwoman and much more. Not all of them are strictly necessary to progressing through the game, and some you will only use once or twice as you play, but it was nice having the wide range of options at your disposal, especially for the later areas of the game. My biggest note here is that I wish you needed more of the transformations to unlock new areas, and that they weren’t just relegated to hunting for items for beating the game with 100% completion. That’s definitely a bit of a missed opportunity, though I’m sure WayForward was a bit overwhelmed by the number fan-inspired transformations that were utilized in the final game.
Just visit Sky and Wrench to get a lift wherever you need to go!

It wouldn’t do the game justice to discuss the combat and not mention the boss battles. While I have always enjoyed the boss fights in Shantae games, I can say without reservation that the bosses in Half-Genie Hero are the best in the entire series. Though there are a couple that were frustrating for various reasons, they were all large, incredibly diverse, well-rendered and challenging fights. There’s not a single one I got through unscathed, and I even had to try a number of times to finally beat the intense Giga Mermaid battle (though that is partially due to me not realizing what her weak spot was). This does bring me to one minor complaint – the game offers the chance to save after you beat each section in a given level. If you save before a boss fight and then die, you are allowed to try your luck again, with one proviso – you are left at one fraction of one heart for your health. Against the Giga Mermaid, that meant that if I got hit by any one of her screen wide attacks, I had to start over from the beginning. Which was especially bad since this was a multi-part battle. Luckily, after the mermaid incident I quickly learned to always go out equipped with tons of recovery items, such as Gator Steaks, Oranges and Elixers. You’ll need all the health you can get, cause these fantastic bosses are really no joke, and fights make you appreciate some of the recurring characters in the Shantae series even more (looking at you, Ammo Baron!).
Meet “Wilbur”. He’s very hungry.

Although no Shantae game is really known for its deep plot, I felt that the plot in Half-Genie Hero was a bit haphazard compared to Pirate’s Curse, at least until the twist at the end of the game. I can’t explain why without going into spoilers, but I just felt it would have helped players to have a bit more backstory to push things forward. That said, I definitely enjoyed my time with Shantae Half-Genie Hero. I managed to beat the game in five and a half hours with 84% completion (though I did manage to get the good ending). There is some replay value for completionists, and there are also art pieces to unlock, Hero-Mode and even playing through the game as Risky Boots herself! Half-Genie Hero mostly made good on all of my vast expectations, though I do hope that the next game in the series is more like Pirate’s Curse. That said, if you’re a fan of Shantae, you can’t go wrong with Half-Genie Hero for $19.99, and I’m very happy to have finally been able to play this gorgeous HD game on my Wii U. Until next time, Tinkerbackers! And keep up the good work, WayForward!

Shantae: Half-Genie Hero Feels Like A Week In The Life Of Shantae. December 29, 2016 . 12:00pm

Every Shantae: Half-Genie Hero’s objective makes it feel like we’re going through, say, a week in the life of our favorite half-genie.

28 comments Read >

Sometimes, Shantae: Half-Genie Hero feels like the video game equivalent of an animated series. Each “week,” there’s a new ordeal for Shantae to deal with. By which I mean, every new location brings with it a new adventure. There are occasional “filler episodes” sometimes preparing you for the events of next week. This means that the overarching story, briefly introduced in the opening, is more of a background event that’s constantly on-going while she deals with her daily life.

Shantae: Half-Genie Hero’s introduction sets up this impression. Shantae finds herself drawn to Uncle Mimic’s house. There, she discovers a secret basement. An unseen voice tells her that she’ll need to take part in adventures that will not only help the human realm, but also save the genie realm. When the morning comes, Uncle Mimic has no idea what she’s talking about, but hey! He has a new machine he’s building that will provide Scuttle Town with electricity and defenses! Isn’t that totally coincidental that such an undertaking would come after she receives an ominous warning? I like to think of this as happening on, say, a Sunday evening and Monday morning.

From there, each area feels like it could be a major event for each day. Risky Boots has sailed into town on her Part Omni-Organic, Partially Titanic, Ocean-Optional Tinkerslug to take Uncle Mimic’s plans. (Don’t call it P.O.O.P. T.O.O.T.!) She isn’t exactly sure what they’re for, but she has to have them. This is basically Shantae’s Monday. She has to run through the burning town, defeating Tinkerbats, until she reaches Risky Boots, retrieves the blueprints, and sends her away. It’s a self contained story that’s only vaguely tied into the overarching plot.

This trend continues with every space that unlocks. What happens the next day? Well, women around Mermaid Falls have been disappearing. Shantae’s the one who needs to find out what’s going on. Oh, it’s the Techno Baron this time. He’s turning regular girls into mermaids, because he’s overfished actual mermaids he’s been canning and selling. There’s a new monster of the week, new people to save, more familiar faces, and even Bolo getting a little upset that Shantae is the one who’s always the hero. Eventually, Shantae ends up getting fired again, needing to rid a restaurant of Tinkerbats for a piece of caramel, reunite a grandma blobfish with her grandkids, get race tickets for Rottytops, and get involved in all sorts of escapades. Do they all have to do with that one, major incident or Uncle Mimic’s machine? No. But, it makes sense in a way that it doesn’t.

Especially since it gives us opportunities to see all sorts of side characters. Think of them as daily guests. Bolo gets to be a big deal when Shantae heads to Mermaid Falls, because he’s tired of being seen as the goof up. Rottytops finally isn’t afraid to show how much she wants to be friends with Shantae, asking for two tickets to the race so they can go together and working on her pit crew. Shantae is dealing with all kinds of affairs, but she’s also spending time with her friends. We get to enjoy all the humor that comes from these escapades.

When you go through Shantae: Half-Genie Hero, it really is like you’re experiencing Shantae’s daily life. After all, she’s a resident genie. A slice-of-life game for her isn’t going to involve exploring the town and spending time doing ordinary things with friends. She’s constantly going to be dealing with monster of the week bosses and everyone’s requests. Shantae: Half-Genie Hero’s Ending Encourages Replays . January 2, 2017 . 12:00pm

Shantae: Half-Genie Hero’s multiple endings and Hero Mode encourage you to keep coming back to collect every item and speed through each stage.

One big way that Shantae: Half-Genie Hero keeps you coming back is with two possible endings. While some points are exactly the same, in terms of dialogue, a rather important incident happens in the good ending and doesn’t occur in the bad one. In fact, the game even makes a point of hinting, in bold, yellow type, that you could have done more. This is referring to four side-quests that can grant you access to the best ending.

After visiting the Hypno Baron’s Castle, you can complete some tasks for the Ammo, Hypno, Squid, and Techno Barons. Each one wants some sort of item, some of which you may already have if you’ve been grabbing things after revisiting levels. Ammo Baron wants five pieces of Scrap Metal, Hypno Baron wants the 10 Sunken Souls, Squid Baron wants a Squid Poster, and Techno Baron wants the Data Chip. While the Scrap Metal pieces and Sunken Souls are things you should probably have found along the way, you can get the Data Chip from the second section of Mermaid Falls, by using the Harpy form to fly to the top, then the Bat, Harpy, and Spider forms to travel through a hazardous maze. The Squid Poster can be found with Abner at Hypno Baron’s Castle, after trading him Squid Baron’s Velvet Poster. After the barons give you Risky Boots’ Buckle, Cufflink, Pendant, and Ribbon, you can trade them to Uncle Mimic for a Magic Polarizer. Just having this makes a huge difference.

Then, there’s Shantae: Half-Genie Hero’s Hero Mode. This mode is practically made for speedrunners. From the very beginning, Shantae knows the monkey, crab, elephant, mouse, and harpy dances. This means you’re able to reach every important optional area from the very start, as well as get through levels a little quicker than you would have during the original playthrough. I found it to be the easier mode for completion purposes. There are a few sections in some locations, specifically a certain portion of Tassel Town, that kept me from wanting to go through that area again. When testing out Hero Mode, I had no such qualms about returning to it. I’d already have all the dances I needed to completely clear it.

Hero Mode gives people who are skilled (and far more dexterous than I am) a chance to get some of the Shantae: Half-Genie Hero’s most difficult trophies. One is Race to the Top. When going through Tassel Town, Wilbur the worm will chase you through a vertical section. If you can climb this area in under two minutes, you earn Race to the Top. Naturally, the Harpy form is a huge help for this. Speed Runner is about defeating the game in under two hours. Then, there’s Quick Collector. It requires you to reach 100% completion in under four hours.

From what I’ve seen, Shantae: Half-Genie Hero plays like a game that encourages you to come back. From the little sidequests for extra items, the gallery you can complete, optional dances and skills to find, and two different endings, it genuinely feels like an experience you’re supposed to go through more than once. Perhaps even attempting to complete it as quickly as possible each time. It’s an inviting adventure, and the wit and fanservice help keep it appealing.

Shantae: Half-Genie Hero is available for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Nintendo Wii U, Xbox One, and PC.

WayForward has released an update regarding its progress on Shantae: Half-Genie Hero’s add-ons. The Tinkerbat form, which was a Kickstarter backer-exclusive reward for people who pledged over $55, will be the game’s first DLC.

In addition, details on the other Shantae: Half-Genie Hero DLC were revealed. The Risky Boots Mode will be the first add-on released. This is a campaign where players follow Risky Boots as she pillages Sequin Land. She has a scimitar and pistol available to her. However, the developer noted that the ninja, officer, and beach outfits with adjusted stats and special moves and Bolo, Rottytops, and Sky Hero Modes are also in development. The DLC code with the Blue Shantae, Classic Risky Boots, and sword add-ons will arrive after Risky Boots Mode.

Apologies for this being a day late, but it’s been crazy with game releases this week, and frankly this one caught us by surprise. So, what was announced? Well, in case you missed it, Shantae Half-Genie Hero got a most unexpected update 1.01 which introduced an entirely new way to play the game. Keep in mind though, this mode is for the old school masochists only, and accordingly is called Hard Core Mode. What makes it so difficult, you ask? Well, for one thing it adds new attacks to Boss fights, it rearranges enemy placement, and much more. You can read all the details in the press release below. While it’s true this update doesn’t include the hotly anticipated Risky Boots mode, it is nice to see WayForward thinking of their fans. If nothing else, Hard Core Mode will give me an excuse to boot up this lavish and lovely game again sooner rather than later!

Due out in spring 2018.

XSEED Games will release Shantae: Half-Genie Hero “Ultimate Day One Edition” for Switch at select retailers throughout North America in spring 2018 for $39.99, the publisher announced.

Meanwhile, PQube Games will release the same “Ultimate Day One Edition” for both PlayStation 4 and Switch throughout Europe during the same release window. European pre-orders are available here.
The “Ultimate Day One Edition” of Shantae: Half-Geni Hero will include the game’s 30-song “Risky Beats” soundtrack on CD, a new art book, the “Pirate’ Queen’s Quest” downloadable content, and the new “Costume Mode” and “Friends Mode” downloadable content.

Here’s a full overview, via XSEED Games:
Don the fancy hat, trade magic for good old-fashioned weapons and tools, and play the role of the bodacious (and ambiguously evil) buccaneer Risky Boots with the Pirate Queen’s Quest DLC. Having successfully stolen the powerful Dynamo from Shantae’s uncle, Risky Boots must now traverse the game to uncover the five mysterious components needed to upgrade the machine and bend Sequin Land to her will in this all-new adventure!
The “Ultimate Edition” also includes the new Costume Mode and Friends Mode DLC, because no dance party is complete without friends and costumes! Friends Mode takes Shantae’s pals Sky, Bolo, and Rottytops into her nightmare where they must find and save her from certain doom. This all-new storyline features ethereal new levels and a special boss encounter. Shantae’s wardrobe gets expanded, too, with the Costume Mode DLC, which provides three new arcade-style adventures for her to sashay her way through in style. Stick to the shadows as Ninja Shantae, soak in the sun as Beach Shantae, or lay down the law as the Mighty Switch Force-inspired Officer Shantae in these arresting new arcade adventures!
Following three highly successful releases with Shantae, Shantae: Risky’s Revenge, and Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse, Shantae: Half-Genie Hero reacquaints players with the cast of Shantae in full HD. The magical world of Sequin Land is more vibrant than ever with high-definition graphics that retain the charm of the original 2D hand-drawn sprites the series is known for. Shantae, the spirited young half-genie, must once again defend Scuttle Town from the pirate captain and self-proclaimed Queen of the Seven Seas, Risky Boots, who plots to steal a newly discovered limitless source of power.
Shantae has previously protected her hometown from all forms of evil including steam-powered pirates, undead evildoers, and militaristic madmen, and is ready to take on Risky Boots with her trademark Hair Whip attack and Belly Dance moves, which give her the power to transform into eight different creatures. Non-stop action with immersive 2.5D environments and a new relic system give novice and expert players a uniquely tailored platforming experience. All of Sequin Land becomes a fully explorable world — after conquering massive bosses, the Arcade-style action stages can be revisited to discover new items and secrets based on new abilities Shantae has gained in later areas.
Shantae: Half-Genie Hero is available now digitally for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, Wii U, PC, and PS Vita. In North America, the PlayStation 4, Wii U, and PS Vita versions are already available in physical editions.
