The Official NPD Monthly Sales Numbers Thread

I guess X1 will do well for a while with the S being new and then PS4 will do well again once the Pro comes out. And then Xbox again when Scorpio cones out lol. These mid gen upgrades made interpreting the numbers more difficult lol.

Nah, Sony will take September, the PS4 slim will boost sales. And remember October is the release of the PSVR, so that will really boost sales probably more so than the Pro will.

Oh right. I don't know much about the PSVR.

It's pretty much sold out with pre-orders and will probably be hard to get for a while. It will boost sales. I figure PS4 will be on top (though it always is with worldwide sales which some seem to forget) probably until Scorpio but I wonder how long that bump would last.

Worldwide is no contest of course, that won't change. US is the only serious battleground. Europe is about 3-1 Sony and Japan about 500-1 lol.

Yeah but even in the US the PS4 is winning by quite a margin.

I was talking month to month sales not lifetime. It's not going to catch up there either as it will be already 4 years into the gen by the time the Scorpio launches. But getting closer on US monthly sales is a good target given where they started from.

as a new X1 S owner, I hope MS has a good September and October. :o

haven't been pleased with recent "decisions" from Sony, and to me, the S is such a more versatile system. plus, as a new 4K tv owner as well, the S offers an affordable option for a 4K UHD player.

Oh, didn't know you'd bought it! Thought you'd decided on the Pro?

I was leaning towards the Pro. but when I was at the store yesterday buying my 4K tv, I said **** it! might as well pick up an X1 S, too! I've been wanting to jump back onto the MS ecosystem for some time and the S just looked like an attractive option. :woot:

With the S, I get a 4K UHD player to use in the future with my 4K tv - that saves me a future purchase of $300-$400 more.

it also saved me on buying extra HDMI 2.0 cables, since the S comes with one and is multiple devices wrapped into one.

Having multiple devices in one also saves me an HDMI port on my tv for future things like the NX.

Plus, the S saved me from having to buy another laptop for basic browsing purposes, since the S has Edge. Used Edge last night and it's so much better and easier to read than the PS4 browser ( hope that's still the case when I use it on my 4K tv......lol ).

so, the S solved multiple needs for me and when I looked at it that way, it just offered tremendous value and convenience.

Yeah, I know the Pro will be more powerful. But it doesn't offer the multi purpose functionality I'm looking for. And I'm playing the long game there, too. The Scorpio will be more powerful than the Pro and so in several years time, once the Scorpio has dropped in price and/or got it's first revision, I'll make the upgrade to the Scorpio.

So, yeah, that means I'll now probably skip the Pro. I really felt Sony dropped the ball by not including a 4K player in the Pro - that certainly was a big factor in me deciding to go with the S instead yesterday. I'm not a hardcore gamer anymore, and I'm someone who does use his console as a multi purpose, multi media device.

Great! I had decided to get the Pro too and it was only the Scorpio announcement and my mate saying he would get the Pro that changed my mind. And I was going to get the S too but now that I am using my TVs direct for Netflix and Amazon Prime I don't really need it. I would like an extra 4K player for the bedroom but I can wait a year. Lets talk in the other threads so as not to derail this one. ;)

So X1 made it 3 months in a row with the lead thanks to the S but from next month we'll see the Slim and VR boost PS and the Pro shortly afterwards.

there's a chance the S will win October due to Gears and the momentum from the last several months.

I'm not sure PS VR will move enough new slim PS4s, especially with the Pro coming out next month.

However, once Pro comes out next month, I see the momentum shifting back towards Sony for the Holidays. I wouldn't be surprised if people have been holding back on getting the slim with the more powerful Pro right around the corner.

Yep that all sounds right.

it looks like PS4 has reclaimed the #1 spot for November NPD!

I'm legit surprised by that, because I honestly thought the X1 would continue its momentum and winning streak with all of the bundles and sales.

however, it looks like my original prediction back in October ( that momentum would shift back to Sony in November for the Holidays once the Pro comes out ) turned out correct.

Not a surprise (as discussed above). Sony still dominating overall but the new products in turn giving each of them a boost.

Don't expect that to change at all until Scorpio. Then Xbox might have a few good months.

yeah. but the real question ( and test ) will be if MS can finally turn it around and stay on top - something they have failed to sustain this console cycle.

also, let's not forget the new kid on the block, the Switch. who knows how that will perform for the rest of the year?

Indeed, for the month of March, Switch may very dethrone PS4 for the #1 spot.

but again, the question is, will that be sustainable?

Even if the Switch were to sustain an advantage, it isn't comparing like for like any more as it's a console being released so much later with a lot of unspent demand unlike PS4. Microsoft only has a chance of staying on top if the Scorpio is a gamechanger and super-aggressively priced. Even being on top from now till the end of the generation might not be enough to wipe out the overall deficit though.

yeah.

I still think the biggest weakness of the Xbox 1 is its "bench" of exclusives and unique experiences - namely the variety of exclusives.

PS4 not only has the larger user base, but no one can argue with the sheer variety of exclusive games. It's got open world action-adventure games like Horizon, fighting games like SF V, BlazBlue, and Guilty Gears, and tons of exclusive JRPGs like Persona or Tales of Berseria.

especially with the fighting and JRPG games, none of those can be found on the Xbox.

that's why I thought it was a complete shame that Scalebound got canned so late in the dev cycle. Same with Fable Legends ( and now with that studio closed no more traditional Fable games ). And games like Sunset Overdrive and Quantum Break and Recore didn't quite seem to take off. And Crackdown 3 is still MIA.

It's not far off the mark to say the Xbox is a Halo/Gears/Forza machine. And just with the games I mentioned above, if they turned those into solid, stable franchises, they could have a pretty decent lineup of unique exclusive franchises.

Just imagine if the bench of Xbox exclusive franchises looked like this:

Halo
Gears
Forza
Killer Instinct
Fable
Crackdown
Scalebound
Sunset Overdrive
Quantum Break
Recore
Phantom Dust

Scalebound and Crackdown 3 should have been Scorpio "launch" games.

Xbox players should be playing Fable Legends and looking forward to a proper Fable 4 in the next year or so.

There should be plans for a Sunset 2 and a Recore 2 a few years later.

and so on.

There are lots of potential Xbox exclusive franchises, but MS, for whatever reason, has failed to cultivate them.

They've definitely dropped the ball on Fable (loved that series) and Scalebound and we need to hear of serious plans for other exclusives at this E3. I love Killer Instinct though, hope that one continues.

^ oh yeah. I totally forgot about Killer Instinct.

but MS can't just rely on KI alone for the fighting game front. It needs to try to secure more Japanese fighting game series. especially for a franchise like Blazblue which has appeared on Xbox consoles in the past.

I think they need to make sure they have access to future mainstream fighters like Street Fighter. I don't know if the demand for the likes of Blazblue is comparable. And one big first party fighting game exclusive like Killer Instinct is probably enough to cover that area for now when there are more pressing concerns. They should stop focusing on wasting money on useless timed exclusives which add nothing to the long term while every time Sony come out with a new Horizon they are creating a possible long term franchise that will keep paying dividends for years/decades.
