Super Mario The Official Super Mario Thread

A new Mario sidescroller was recently announced for the 3ds, no title or screenshots though.

Based on the last two Mario side scrollers they made (New Super Mario Bros. and New Super Mario Bros. Wii), I predict the amazingly dull title of New Super Mario Bros. 3D!

More likely to be New Super Mario World, really. Well, if it ends up being based on Super Mario World at all.

the "new" series of mario games is horrible...it just lacks imagination in level design and enemies... I wish it was more 3d land or galaxy in style...

Totally. I don't know what it is but the "New" games all look and feel so bland.

I hope whenever they do make Super Mario Bros. 4, that it has a very different style.

The "New" games are just pathetically easy. NSMB2 is focusing on coin collection...meaning you'll always have umpteen million lives. It's not like you ever lose a life in those games anyway..

Not like the earlier games (SMB3, SMW) were all that hard anyway...but I digress

Looks like more interesting backgrounds will be in the Wii-U game.

It think the lack of difficulty in the NSMB games is exaggerated. A lot of the reason the earlier games were harder is because of the lack of a save feature, and they're definitely harder than Super Mario World with the exception of a few levels.

I think for me it's more that I don't like the aesthetic. NSMB just looks too clean and empty, I dunno. Don't get me wrong, NSMB was a fantastic game, I just wish they would get a little more creative with the art style (maybe go pixelated or cell shaded, etc. something that isn't just clean polygons.) I do like the grime on those pipes in the picture up there, though.

I feel like the aesthetic is hurt by the screen being pulled back so far for the four player co-op in the home console installments. It makes the levels look emptier than they really are. Still, the art style could stand to be a little more distinct.

It's crazy, in a way, to think that at the very end of 2012...Is when we get our HD Mario. Either way, I'll take it. 9.1 is great and it sounds fun...Pumped to finally play it.

Three more days! Well...Two until the Midnight launch at Nintendo Store... but...I don't live in NY. :(

Finding this balance haunted New Mario games in the past. None of them have been particularly challenging. None of them felt like they were anything but a routine trip back into 2D Mario, tamed to appeal to all audiences without regard for players that wanted a test of their skills. What’s more impressive about Mario U is that while its Story Mode does serve up some of that challenge, Nintendo opted to do even more. They created an independent challenge mode. And it will kick your ass.

So glad to read the above... If there was ONE complaint I had about the New series it that it's always been FAR too easy. Sure, you can fall down a pit but it always seemed like there was a 1up Mushroom waiting for you when you went back into the game to try again... There was almost nothing there to test your skills. Sure NSMB2 had the coin thing...but it was a gimmick, add the fact that it constantly fed you extra lives for collecting coins and you have one easy game.

Really glad to see this. I don't expect to get Game Over's...Hell..In Super Mario World, even as a kid I didn't die much, however the world was just so vast, fun, challenging and worth going back to that it didn't matter. Hopefully NSMBU brings me back to that.

Edit: I don't think it's really fair for the reviewer to complain about the graphics as "bare minimum" of HD. Yes, I get his point that the WiiU is a powerful system but how many launch titles take advantage of the power? Heck, some early 360/PS3 games look last gen compared to what we have now.

I honestly can't wait to see what Nintendo does with a non "New" Mario game. You know we'll get one...Be it a proper sequel to Mario 64, Galaxy 3 or a brand new Mario platformer... I'm sure we'll see the plummer blow our minds graphically soon enough.

What I'm hoping for eventually is something that expands upon Super Mario 3d Land. Trying as best they can to duplicate the 2d Mario formula in 3d, but maybe less floating abstract levels. I want them to simultaneously be large, explorable areas but at the same time have a relatively linear path. I want to feel like I'm journeying somewhere with plenty of traps and obstacles to deal with.

A few levels in and I caught myself grinning like an idiot. My son was laughing and saying how awesome this was.

I've played NSMB games before...This one however...This one really tries to capture the feeling of SMW..And so far..So very good.

Good heavens this game gets better with every new level... I swear it does.

Some one needs to explain to Nintendo there are many evil things a villain can do that is not kidnapping a Princess

Um... No one else really complains. I'm fine with it... Everyone I know is fine with it. Odd ass thing to complain about.

There really should be something added to the usual villain plot. Super Mario Bros. 3 wasn't just Bowser kidnapping Toadstool. There were the addition of the Koopalings and them stealing the kings' wands and turning them into animals. It doesn't have to be complex, just enough to set it apart.
