In light of ROTF, I really think that they could just be five TF's who stood with the Primes when they battled the Fallen and later remained on Earth to help guard the Matrix. Then upon reawakening in the present day, they either are initially confused or just don't care about practicability and adopt their dinosaur alt. modes.

The Primes came to earth long after the dinosaurs were extinct. They came during man's first years. Besides, the dinobots transform into mechanical dinosaurs right? So, i dont think that they would blend in so well with the other dinosaurs...

That's why I was thinking that upon being revived in the present day, they could scan animatronic dinosaurs. An alternative could maybe they discovered dinosaur fossils back in 17000 BC. They scanned them and doing so turned the tide of the battle against the Fallen.
