The PLASmatic Music Recomendations

So, I finally got ahold of Bloc Party's "Silent Alarm" over the weekend. I hadn't heard a damn thing off it at all (don't listen to the radio at all, other than "Bob & Tom In The Morning" on the way to work), but everyone's raving about them here made me want to give it a try. I have to say I'm impressed. So many of the new bands out today barely know how to play their instruments at all, but these kids sure do. Very catchy stuff. I like! Thanks for the recommendation.

bloc party, are they the ones that song 'banquet'? i think that's them. if it is, it's the only song by them i've heard. i was underwhelmed. a band i am liking is the coral. i got a copy of their single for "in the morning" on vinyl, and it and the b-side, "gina jones", are really good.

i saw a band out of chicago last night called THE SLEEPERS, they were pretty rad, worth checking out.

I downloaded Destroyer's "This Night" album from Soulseek recently and it's pretty darn good. Highly recommended for fans of the New Pornographers. Thanks for the tip Maxwell, wherever you are.

i think everyone should listen to Darkest Hour, Jawbreaker, Immortal Technique and the Appleseed Cast. Though my opinions are just my own.

this thread is to post all the things musical that you can recommend

and by the way, why exactly do you recommend these bands?

I'm a huge fan of Jawbreaker and I also like Appleseed Cast quite a bit. I actually had their song Steps and Numbers play at my wedding.

Is anyone here a fan of the band Ours? I just heard an amazing song by them called "Broken". The singer's voice sounds a lot like Jeff Buckley and apparently he gets that comparison a lot, according to the reviews I've read of them. Anywho, I highly recommend checking them out if you like passionate Jeff Buckley-style vocals and lush, atonal guitars in the vein of the Velvet Underground or Mogwai.

this week has been astonoshing regarding finding new music

thanks a lot to Master Chief for his "find music" thread where he gave us www.pandora.com

this week alone I've come upon so much stuff I never thought I'd come across with

Autolux: these guys should be selling millions of albums, they're like the continuation of Sonic Youth
Curve: remember when Madonna made Ray Of Light? well, this band sound the way that album should have sounded originally, ballsy and dancable and amazing
Pedro The Lion: why the **** nobody ever inisted me on this amazing group?
Lake Trout: I've had a really hard time finding these guys, but damn they are sure know how to make an own style

as far as the following bands, if anyone knows where to find them, please help me out
The Flying Nuns
The Great Depression
Unconsious Pilot

I can't find their music anywhere :(

Yeah, I'm loving that Pandora site too! I might have to check out that Autolux band if you compare them to Sonic Youth.

I'm really liking what I've heard from this band called Convoj. They've got that raw garage-rock sound mixed with a bit of art-rock and maybe a little 90's indie-rock like Superchunk or Built to Spill.

I'm surprised you hadn't heard of Pedro The Lion before. Those guys have been putting out great albums for a while now. You should check out "It's Hard To Find A Friend", "Winners Never Quit" and "Control". Those are all great albums.

that's the way life works, in odd ways

Minus The Bear - Highly Refined Pirates

I had heard about these guys, but never actually even bothered to give them a more in depth check, so last night I DLed the album, just to see if they were any good

today I am blown away, this is another album I am getting this weekend

it sounds kinda like progressive rock with an indie attitude, but without the blown-out-of proportion arrengements and maze-like structures

just very well executed instrumentation, subtle arrengements, catchy melodies, and crearly an attitude of not taking themselves too seriously

very recommended

by the way, I did a search and Archangel seems to be the only user who likes them

way to go dude

I love you dude, get their new album "Menos el Oso", if you haven't already. Oh and "They Make Beer Commercials Like This" as well, both are amazing.

I haven't looked through much of this thread, but i'll just throw out some bands that i'm really into right now, a lot have probably been mentioned already, but you never know. I was gonna mention Minus the Bear and The Decemberists, but they've been covered already.

The New Pornographers
The Hold Steady
Sufjan Stevens
My Morning Jacket
Dismemberment Plan
Destroyer
Belle & Sebastian
And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead
Sparklehorse
Ted Leo & The Pharmacists
Metric

My top reccomendation is definately The New Pornographers though, amazing band.

two new bands I need to tell you about:

Turing Machine and Lake Trout

Turing Machine sounds like a combination of the frantic instrumental dynamics of The Mars Volta, the elegance of arrengements of Interpol and the lush soundscapes of Mogwai, if you find them, you will like it. it's post rock that you can dance to, yet, it's not dance music, great band

Lake Trout I really can't define, they sound like brit pop, like shoegazing, like everything and anything, yet, like nothing at all, the only band I can identify them with is Kashmir, but that's where comparisons end, just find them and listen to them

Okay, after much procratinating I finally bought this.
Pulp
His n'Her's
If there's an album that defines this band's appeal to me, this would be it, Most people would vote for "Different Class" but the overall feel of this one makes it one of the best "Brit-pop" (if you like your labels) albums out there.
Songs like "Babies" and "Joyriders" make this one an easy listen, Jarvis Cocker's dry (and very Brittish) wit are all about the lyrics, It often sounds more like self'parody than actual boasting on the tracks, Intrumentally it's sufficiently elaborate to hold your attention, while remaining sparce enough to not overwhelm you.

give a try if you can.

Fan-freaking-tastic album. Joyriders, Lipgloss, Pink Glove, Razmattazz -- awesome songs.

pretty generic sounding. sounds like every crappy bar band i've ever heard.

how can they be generic when theres hardly any bands out there today that sound anything like these guys? i mean, i certainly dont know all the bands and music out there today, but i cant think of anyone that is similar to these guys that would cause anyone to consider them "generic". the only other band that i can think of that's reminiscent to these guys would be zeppelin and other rock bands from the 60's/70's....they got that fierce power-rock swagger built on a base of blues....and i dont know what your taste in music is, but to me thats far from what i'd consider "crappy".

the clientele (very brittish, very good)

the earlies (awesome moody band)

team sleep (with chino more from deftones, but nothing like deftones)

and Plas...if you dug Lake trout, you'll probably like Rollerskate Skinny.

just stating my opinion. you're free to like them if you want. i choose not to. i'm not big on that "power-rock" or lame white-boy blues sound. sorry, man.
