they were allright i guess. i downloaded the song you named and it sounded kind of like 90's riot grrl stuff, with a hollywood sheen put on it.
 
I wouldn't be surprised if Citizen Cope has already been mentioned but that's some good music. I'd also recommend Joanna Newsom and Death From Above 1979.
 
Okay, here's a band not too many people have heard of: Storyville. They were a blues-rock band from Austin that put out three albums in the '90's, comprised of some VERY heavy hitters in the Austin music scene.

Veterans from dozens of blues jam sessions and all-star backing bands, the members of Storyville -- all native Texans -- gelled at just such a jam, in 1994 at the Austin club known as Antone's. Bassist Tommy Shannon and drummer Chris Layton had played in Stevie Ray Vaughan's Double Trouble for ten years before the bluesman's death in 1990, and both moved on to the Arc Angels before meeting the other members of Storyville. Lead guitarist David Holt played on the Mavericks' debut album, and appeared with rhythm guitarist David Grissom in Joe Ely's backing band. Grissom had gained his early experience touring with John Mellencamp and the Allman Brothers. The only member of the band with less than ten sideman credits, vocalist Malford Milligan, sang with the Austin band Stick People before the formation of Storyville -- named, of course, in honor of New Orleans' historic red-light district.

After several sessions to work out their bluesy soul/R&B, Storyville hopped into the recording studio and produced an album for November Records. Released the same year of the band's foundation, The Bluest Eyes won the band six awards at the 1995 Austin Music Awards, including Best Band and Best Single. The LP was rated highly in mainstream publications, and earned Storyville a major-label contract, with the Atlantic subsidiary Code Blue. Though the band released no new material during 1995, three more trophies at that year's Austin Music Awards were forthcoming. Second album A Piece of Your Soul was released in 1996, followed in 1998 by Dog Years.

I have their first two albums, but never have found their third (which reportedly isn't as good as the other two). Malford Milligan is one of my favorite singers. So expressive and powerful with an amazing range. One of these days I'm going to get down to Austin and catch him live.

I'll also add that the other band Chris Layton and Tommy Shannon were involved in mentioned above, Arc Angels, were an AWESOME band, with Doyle Bramhall Jr. and Charlie Sexton sharing guitar and frontman duties. I actually got to see them live and their show was outstanding. Unfortunately, they only ever put out one album. The good news is that that album is an incredible listen. I wish they'd regroup and put out another one. None of those guys have really done squat since the Arc Angels gig (excluding Storyvile, of course ;) ).

Wow. I'm surprised anyone mentioned Storyville or The Arc Angels. I saw an Arc Angels reunion show at the first ACL Festival. Awesome.
 
Been listening to the new Gorillaz CD. The more I listen to it the more I like it. There were a few songs like "Dare", "Feel Good Inc." and "O' Green World" that I immediately was drawn to, but there are several on the album that didn't really resonate with me until after listening to them a few times like "November Has Come" and "Every Planet We Reach Is Dead". It's interesting to listen to this stuff as much of it sounds somewhat simplistic on the surface until you really pay attention to the detail and what's going on in the background. There are a lot of layers in this music and it's pretty clear that Damon Albarn is the driving force behind it all. He gets to have some fun here that the overall focus of Blur didn't allow him to.

On another note, I got ahold of some of Ladytron's stuff and I'll say that it's "okay". I feel like they're trying to tread a lot of ground that Vanessa Daou already has, to be honest. And Daou did it with more sensuality, self-awareness and a greater sense of melody. Ladytron isn't bad by any means, but there are artists out there who do it better than they do.

I think even people who don't like hip-hop will like Psyche Origami. Check out thier CD The Standard.
 
has anyone else checked out the new black rebel motorcycle club album entitle 'Howl"? its pretty different from the previous stuff which i was never too big a fan of. but this new album is fantastic. its like johnny cash with slide guitar being influenced by the velvet underground.

I have it, it's a very interersting departure from "Take Them On..."

I was expecting something somewhat more noisy, but I do need to listen to it more often

by the way, lately, with all the work I've had, I haven't had time to check a lot of the new music that I'm getting, which is a bummer
 
Anybody a fan of The Amps? Kim Deal started the band and it featured Jim MacPherson from the Breeders and some of the songs were co-written by Bob Pollard. They had a pretty good sound, kinda raw and poppy. Anyone?
 
DFA 1979 has a new remix album out. The stations are now playing the "Romantic Rights" remix good stuff. :up:

Depeche Mode's new album ("Playing the Angel" sounds pretty good not really a fan of Martin Gore vocals but Gahan has improved alot. The album sounds kinda like a mix of "Black Celebration and "Amesiac" Radiohead. :)

I had Patrick Wolf on my iPod, and hadn't listened to it, so I gave it a go, and I really enjoyed it, it's like electronic type melodies, but Patrick singing isn't, he's most attuned to an indie background, or so I felt like. Really lovely, though.

Patrick Wolf is good. He reminds me of a male version of bjork.

Yeah... it wasn't bad. I didn't like it as much as previous albums though.

I like " A Boy Like Me", so I'll check out his stuff.
 
The new Coheed & Cambria album - awesome. Anything by Dillinger Escape Plan and anything with Mike Patton.
 
Minus The Bear - Highly Refined Pirates

I had heard about these guys, but never actually even bothered to give them a more in depth check, so last night I DLed the album, just to see if they were any good

today I am blown away, this is another album I am getting this weekend

it sounds kinda like progressive rock with an indie attitude, but without the blown-out-of proportion arrengements and maze-like structures

just very well executed instrumentation, subtle arrengements, catchy melodies, and crearly an attitude of not taking themselves too seriously

very recommended

by the way, I did a search and Archangel seems to be the only user who likes them
