Still... Actors learning MMA just for a movie can never catch up real martial artists' skill in action.

I have no issues with American remakes of foreign films.

HOWEVER.

The Raid, just like Old Boy, are movies that have slipped into the American/Western World's lexicon. It left such a mark that even my friends who aren't into foreign films have seen The Raid and Old Boy.

And like what many has said, the actors in The Raid are people who have practiced this brutal style of martial arts for decades. You can't just train an American dude for a few months. You can tell the difference. It's less earnest.

Dredd and Raid are both excellent films, what makes Raid special is the Indonesian martial arts and usage of fist fights that makes it special, an American version would just be with wrestling moves and guns.
 
Yeah, The Raid was special because it's so rare for an Indonesian film to break into the public's consciousness, especially in the US.

More fun facts;

Not interested in the Hemsworth brothers being in this. Give me Scott Adkins and Jason Statham as the brothers, Michael Jai White as the surly SWAT guy who survives, Mel Gibson/Harrison Ford/Liam Neeson/Kevin Costner as the dirty filing cabinet throwing detective, Dolph Lundgren as the leader of the machete gang, Tony Jaa as Mad Dog and throw a bunch of stunt men in there for good measure.

Though I must admit, a Patrick Hughes directed Predator 4 set in the Australian outback with The Hemsworths, Sam Worthington, Jai Courtney, Sullivan Stapleton and Manu Bennett would rock my world.

That's not entirely true though. Julie Estelle who plays Hammer girl is one of the most violent and skilled fighters in the movie and she had no prior fighting experience at all.
 
Remake ? Lol so ridiculous. The films works because it has 2 things. Amazing performers (not only the protagonists , but the entire crew of stuntman) and a great director/coreographer combo...two things that are simply not "remakable". There's nothing to remake here. There's talent creating a great action movie out of something super simple.

She's working with two amazing choreographers , something hollywood has no idea what it is.

Well, Iko and Yayan will be the choreographers for The Raid remake. Iko did say he will train the Hollywood actors Silat, but I'm not sure how intensive can the training be.

First, Julie Estelle had 6 months intensive Silat training before shooting and they communicate better in Indonesian (Iko and Yayan aren't comfortable in speaking English).
Second, Iko & Yayan will be busy with their next Indonesian action project, The Night Comes For Us (Joe Taslim as the lead), start shooting in June, so I don't know if they'd have plenty of time to train the Hollywood actors before start shooting in Fall.
Third, I think Silat suits Asian small-sized bodies better.
 
Another appeal of the original Raid was that it wasn't American.

It's just that, once you put western actors in with an American setting, you lose a lot from the original.

That's why I still think the American Old Boy failed; it's American. The original was so weird in a Korean kind of way that no other culture can replicate it. It's a different sensibility that's completely foreign to Americans. That makes it intriguing.

Loving that there is so much positive buzz around this. I can't f***ing wait.

As for the remake. The Hemsworth brothers? Seriously? What are they, trying to make them into the action/adventure version of the Sheen and Estevez or something. Maybe they should call the movie COPS AT WORK.

Seriously, if you use one of them, fine. But not both. Although neither would really get me particularly excited for this. But I also wouldn't want to see one-note action stars in this either. I've pretty much accepted that no matter who they cast, the fight scenes won't be as impressive as they are in the original. So in that case, I'd rather go with people who are actors first, but have also shown themselves to do action well. My cast would be something like this; feel free to tell me how much it sucks:

Rob (Rama): Ryan Gosling
Andy (Andi): Ben Foster
Sgt. Jenkins (Sgt. Jaka): Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje
Mad Dog: Michael K. Williams
Tony Piccardo (Tama Riyadi): Oscar Isaac
Lt. Waylon (Lt. Wahyu): Stephen Lang

Saw an interview with Gareth Evans talking about a camera move during the car chase. They actually passed a camera between 3 cars through the windows from camera man to camera man. There was a similar shot in part 1 when the camera follows a guy dropping through the floor. Can't wait to see that car scene.
 
Well the screening was canceled due to there being no subtitles. That sucks.
 
If anyone in the UK is signed up with the unlimited card from Cineworld. There is a advanced screening for this film on the 31st. I was about to cancel my card until i released they done gems like this. Keep your eyes open .
