The Return of Powergirl

SuperSpeed was one of Powerwomans powers.

Of course she was not Kryptonian,... and she lacked the finese of a flash,.. so she left a neat hole in the side of her new bedroom wall as she pushed to beat Lanas fall into the machine.

She didn't think about it,.. she just moved out causing multiple sonic booms that put the JLA on high alert up in the watchtower.

A little over 2000 miles in less than a second was hard and she didn't waste time trying to brake on the other end,... She simply moved the machine from under Lana before wrenching to a halt a good four miles away.

Lana continued her fall the the hardpacked dirt of the yard at the Kent farm only to be caught by Superman.


Of course she was completly out of the loop.

"What just happened?" She squeaked into the Man of Steels chest.

"You almost got mulched by that old machine I keep telling you to replace,... "
He placed her on her feet.

"I couldn't get here in time,.. but luckily someone else could and did,... I'm going to go thank her now."

Lana looked around before looking at the rising smoke off in the distance - no doubt her now wrecked machine.

"Kara?,....Why didn't she come back?"

Superman simply shook his head made a quick trip to return the junked machine before flying off.

He found her on Mount McKinley sitting in her singed unitard and tattered cape. Even though she was somewhat solar powered like Superman,.... she lacked his forcefield aura that protected his costume from the ravages of being Superhuman.

She saw him coming and wiped her tears quickly,.. only to start up again when he landed and sat beside her.

He sat and let her cry, fighting the urge to take her in his arms,.. knowing what it would do to him if his cousin or lois from another universe tried to comfort him that way.

So he waited until she regained control and quietly said:
"Thank you".

She looked at him in a way that Lois used to look at him,.. the "You big dummy" look before being matter of fact and too candid:

"You know why I'm crying don't you?"

He nodded but said: "yes,.. but Our Kara couldn't have saved her."

"You could and you did,.... and that I'm grateful."

Kara almost screamed.

"BUT I DIDN'T WANT TO!!!"

She burst into tears and fell into him, grabbing him as if holding on for her life. almost anyone else on earth would have been killed as she clung close and dug her fingers into him.

He sat very still at first before gently taking her into his arms and holding her,... patting her in an akward "there, there" motion.

He looked around concentrating on everything but the woman in his arms.

Down the mountain he noticed a group of mountain climbers approaching maybe a half a mile away.

Scooping her up the man of Steel flew off,.. headed for JLA Watchtower.

Down on the mountainside,.. a highspeed camera whirred as it took at least twenty pictures of the departing heroes.

Thanks in large part to the Electronic age,.. the Story broke the next Morning:

POWERGIRL ALIVE!

The spread of pure speculation showcased the best picture of the set,.. showing Superman standing with a clingy Powergirl in his Arms just before he took off.


The world Whirled in Shock,... Powergirls body was exhumed and found to be still dead,.. Powergirl of the Teen Titans couldn't be reached for comment but it was easily clear the the woman in Superman's Arms was much more *AHEM* Mature than the Teen Titan.

Up in the Watchtower,.. The JLA Discussed options.

Truth was always good,.. but the world at large wasn't really aware of the fact of alternate universes, other dimensions,.. In fact they have yet to land on Mars,..

Hesitation was largely due to the fact that the track record on earth of accepting ANYTHING not in plain sight was terrible.

The refusal to believe that the Justice league once transported Earth to the Rann Solar System when there was a real chance that the Sun was about to be destroyed, The refusal to believe that there really are Aliens and not Pointy eared Eskimoes who moved to antartica,.... the "Yeah sure" attitude involving the Green Lantern Corp,..

This world wasn't ready to face the fact that there may be Millions of other Earths with millions of other persons each living a slightly different life,.. and that it was possible to visit or be visited from them.

Lying wasn't an true option,.... but the JLA wanted to spin this to cause as little damage as possible.

PowerWoman grew tired of apologizing,.. and the JLA grew tired of hearing it,... Finally the Batman interrupted the back and forth saying:

"It's not your fault Kara,.. we'd have to deal with this sooner or later,.. so stop apologizing for saving a life."

He paused looking at the hang dog Superman.

"What we have to do now is explain your presence here,... and that of your daughter."


Heated debate continued,.. with some heroes asking what the big deal is,... just tell them that she's from an alternate timeline that no longer exists,... it would be true.

Others countered that that was too much information because the scientific community would like to know how the JLA knew.

Powerwoman spent her time in her condo on earth in her new civilian identity and at the request of the JLA did not put on her costume.

It took a couple of days,.. but the JLA decided to just say that she was from an alternate timeline where Powergirl was not killed saving the world from the Planet Eater.

They set up a press conferance in Metropolis,.. and scripted Powerwoman and Powergirl to fly in under their own power.

Just before Dawn - Superman Stood alone in SuperWomen Park in Metropolis on an overlarge stage.

Originally it was Just a Park,... Then SuperPark when it was Believed Superman, SuperGirl, and Superboy had all died getting rid of Doomsday -

Until two months later an overpowered Superboy returned carrying the other two depowered kryptonians,... they had taken Doomsday to a planet between galaxies so far from any sort of sunlight that they each drained themselves of solar energy as they crossed the vast distance back to the Sol Galaxy.

Since the other two were in a self induced state of suspended animation it was up to Kon- El to slingshot around the first star they approached,.. A Blue Giant,.. and soak up enough to make the trip by almost sundipping as close as he could. Back on Earth,.. Supergirl was the first to wake up under the gentle prodding of a yellow Star.

............. Just in time to prevent Luthor from Killing the comantose Man of Steel,.... And dying in his place.

Then it was rededicated as SuperWoman Park,..... The Three Statues were combined by Superman and Boy into One large SuperGirl Statue.

Until PowerGirl Died.

Then the Name was changed to SuperWomen Park.

And A Large Silver Statue Of PowerGirl was Set Next to the Large Golden Statue of Supergirl.

Now Superman Stared at the Large Statues and Wished he could've done Something to save either one of them. His thoughts turned to the CURRENT powerwoman on planet and as it had been since she arrived he was conflicted.

SHE had married him in another reality and they had had three children together. EVERYTIME he ran into her,.. he was very aware of how she responded to him before she brought herself firmly under control.

In a moment of Clarity - he realized that he had loved his Powergirl.

And now he had a second chance with this one,..... if he wanted it.

As the Sun came up,... and the first few people started to trickle in,.... Kal continued to stare at the Silver Statue,....

BoosterGold Tapped in the latest findings of the Branch of Hypertime they had been following for the last two weeks "their time" along the Path Powerwoman had come from.

This "safer" version of the Hypertime ship a much better craft to adventure around in,.. four bunks, a small galley, four bucket seats up front in addition to the piloting chair.....

But it was much slower going because they were following the energy signature left behind by the previous ships Use of Steels Hammer from another Universe.

So what took Kara a few hours had taken the JLa'ers almost two months of crossing and recrossing a trail that grew steadily fainter.

The excitement they had all felt when they had first started out that petered out once they entered this deadzone where every variation of their earth had at best life without intelligence at worst a dead planet that was a base for Martians,
Was slowly returning as they neared the end of their Journey......

One common factor was what appeared to be the remnants of a massive explosion that had ripped a portion of the atmophere away and tilted the planet off axis.

And the further down the dead branch, the less life they found.

Now by the Beetles Calculation, they were approaching the divide,.. the main branch of this HyperTimeline where the Explosion originated.

Booster touched a button on the arm of his chair:

"Looks like we might be coming to the end guys,.... Sumbody want to page Marvel?"

Azure beetle San's Mask stepped out of the Galley with a sandwich in one hand and a little bell in the other.

"I got this" He mumbled around a bite of what appeared to be Ham and Tuna.

Booster Shuddered as he saw what looked like peanut butter on the bread.

"Okay,... I'll pull us out as soon as he arrives."

The Azure Beetle Gently rang the little bell and then quickly put it down and stepped away.

Even though the bell had been placed on the deck of the craft,.. the last tinkle of it continued to hang in the air,... dropping in tone and frequency as it got louder and louder.

Just as it could be felt in Boosters chest, there was a Flash and Crack of Thunder - And Marvel Materialized in the middle of the room with two large dufflebags And Ms Marvel riding on his shoulders.

Always the grim Marvel,.. Freddy cracked a smile as Mary got down and informed her that she needed to go on a diet.

Mary just Grinned and stuck out her tongue at the current Mightiest Mortal.

Turning toward the drop-jawed expidition who had only expected Marvel with this weeks groceries Mary spread her skirts and courtsied before saying:

Billy and the Jonn both figure you might need more muscle for this so i was recruited to help out or at worse case go for help if this is really as ugly as it might be.

Booster and the Senior Bug quickly put away their supplies why the younger Beetle Handed Mary into the chair and started describing how things worked.

It was a Game the Superhero community played to keep them grounded.

Both were intelligent and Already knew all about how this craft operated,.. but it gave them the excuse to talk to each other.
In another time it would've been courtship behavior.

Booster and Blue Were Married With children so they just smiled indulgently while dragging the Clueless Marvel away to give the two single people some privacy.

Soon everything was ready and Blue Beetle was seated in the controlling chair with everyone else strapped in around him.

With a Thought he brought the craft to a stop where from the outside in this reality it appeared to erupt out of nothing.

except for the Gasp from Ms. Marvel,.. the little craft was silenced by the view of a completly dead world missing a good portion of itself and had a bright white glittering ring like Saturn.

"When is this?" Mary finally asked.

"Sometime after where Powerwoman said she left her foe", returned the Beetle as he busied himself by scanning the area.

No one else had the urdge to speak,.. the damaged sphere was obviously a Damaged Earth and seeing it like this made made for a somber mood.
