Transformers The Reviews Thread

I just brought the new Empire mag and it had a review of the movie and an extensive feature. Pretty good...here is the last paragraph from the review:

"...Still it's [Bay's] best film - a big, brash, dumb, childish, funny, imperfect but ridiculously exciting action-comedy. Set aside the Plausible, and you'll be caught likea bunny in the headlights."

What we expected, meh-terrible dialogue but ****ing amazing, eye-popping action.

I don't mind criticism of the movie as long as it's constructive and based on the execution/storytelling. These reviewers could never admit they enjoyed the movie because they feel the source material is beneath them. Kind of like the hundreds of film snobs who bashed Star Wars A New Hope because they thought is was silly at the time.

Well put.

The movie is Awesome, it beats all of the major superhero movies this year in terms of action, story and humour. Amazing effects i'd give it 8.5 out of 10 and T2 was 9 :woot:

The 2 negative reviews on rottentomatoes are biased. They both can't get passed the idea that the movie based on "toys". These hypocrites probably gave POTC rave reviews even though it's based on a theme park ride.

LOL. Well, Ebert didn't. I think he gave it beyond glorious reviews at the time. Commended it for "strength of pure narrative." http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/19770101/REVIEWS/701010315/1023
I really can't wait to see his review of Transformers. I know he's sick, but he's still writing reviews, right?

Ok just seen it..

Ok it was better then i thought.. but it was far drom a fantastic movie..
it was more of a comedy then anything else...
and the action was trademark "Bayish" (Lots and LOTS! of slow motion)
and he reshoot a scene from The Rock..(Runing with a flair (in slowmo) with jets!)

7/10 and thats beeing nice

LOL. This had be rolling:
"The metal aliens need to find Sam because he has something they want. Though Sam has posted it on eBay and they could just bid on it, they don’t have a Paypal account."

Why take all that time when you could just go take it by force? Screwy critics. :p

This movie needs to come out already. Some people just can't get over the fact that this movie is based on toys. They think everymovie needs to be The Godfather and Citizen Kane. When i go to see a movie i want to be wowed and wonder. If i want to watch something realistic i'll watch the discovery channel.

um, shouldn't we Sticky this at this point, Mod's?

Man that critic Victoria Alexander really makes me mad. I don't even know how she gets the credibility to be a reviewer on Rotten Tomatoes. Take a look at her reviews and read her comments. Looks like she's from the ghetto. Seriously.

Many critics are often writers first, movie experts second (if at all). They're called upon not just to say "OMG THAT ROCKED" but to explain in well-written engaging words why they think what they think. The sooner some kids around here realize that, the sooner they'll be able too look deeper into the reviews and maybe learn something.

i think it's interesting that the one guy said that this movies main flaw is that it tries to treat the material like it's more than it's supposed to be... or something along those lines

interesting that's all...

I also find it interesting that what's "good" is the visual side of things...and what's "weak" is the plot side of things

maybe next time bay will get a better script to shoot:cwink:

I agree. Can you imagine History of Violence... or Children of Men directed by Michael Bay?

having not read the scripts...not really
i can't say what was director and what was script writer so no

ur gonna get us to assume that because he directed Badboys with Bruckheimers money from a script that was nothing but action and gags that he'd take a script that's no doubt mostly subtext and metaphor and make badboys out of it...
that's what wrong with bay haters

hows bout this...what would happen if Cronanberg(sp) directed badboys(assuming he says yes)
he's gonna shoot the script with little onset additions and reductions to the point where it's full of subtext?

I'll say this much..he'll try.. and the film will fail even harder:o

How about X-Men? Whoever doesn't think Michael Bay would not have ripped out the "alienation/prejudice" undertones and substituted a magical thingamabob or precious diamond as the central plot device as well as made The Brotherhood a "cool" badass gang of bank robbers (and nothing more) is crazy.

oh yes...so bay would shoot X-men and using his inherent sense of finding the meaningfull things and "skipping" them, he'd make X-men pointless?
sorry dude...but unlike the message in fantastic four for example
if u shot any good xmen script even without dialogue and with a golden crisp sky line
it'd still scream social predujice

:whatever:

CFlash, after reading that review by Alexander, doesn't it seem like she hated the whole concept of the movie before even watching it ? The way she criticizes it seems she is trying to make fun of it and make fun of us. Like she is putting us down. She doesn't seem to understand it's a sci-fi film and whatever she doesn't like is all based on her taste rather than on critical standards. Oh well what can we do. They are only critics, they will not decide if are going to like it or how much money it makes. I will stop putting this critic down. You all can tell clearly by seeing the way she writes her reviews.

I just can not fathom how Bay managed to make so much action with a reported budget of $145 million. What the hell did Singer use the $206 million ++++ i SR for, and the $258 million Raimi spent on Spider-Man 3? Did they wipe their asses with hundred dollar bills?

I know dude, I mean Jesus Christ- I liked those films... but, come on. Transformers with a MUCH smaller budget is going to be providing the best effects we've seen in YEARS!!! Which just doesn't technically sound right and I to wonder- wtf did these other studios do with that money???

I am really loving these reviews.

Great to hear that some/most of the critics are getting it- that a summer blockbuster doesn't need to be an academy award nominated drama. You've got your fall academy award time, winter family time, after that 'dump' time, and then :wow::woot: time. It gives you a little balance, which is cool.

Seeing TF Monday, as excited as ever.

And as somebody said a couple back- litterally seems like a live action cartoon- in a good way, and I can tell that through the clips. Maybe it's just the lighting, but whatever it is this is the first film based on a cartoon or comic that actually looks like it's primary source. Ang tried and did okay with the box thing, but for me it's always been the lightning and cinematography and Bay scored in what I've seen so far. Note- I am not talking exact transfers like 300 and Sin City.:cwink:

Bay shoots fast
so "time is money plays into effect"

he's very efficient and there's no goofing around on the tension filled dangerous sets

all the cars used tie into a maketing deal with his pals at GM

He shoots everything he can live and that saves on the cgi budget
they don't have to do a digital bus being ripped in two or cgi car being flipped...they just toss factory line empty cars around

plus he's got a great eye, so the cgi u see is top of the line
(note saturn in FF2)

stuff like Superman have not only the cgi character catching a plane...but the effects house has to do the whole plane aswell...
(keeps the cgi costs down)

i'd love to see bay apply his cgi quota to the concept of supermans flight...

I know what you mean, but it's no different than some of the dissin on TF G1 that goes on right here in this forum... by fans, no less. I don't agree with a lot of what she says, but I find WHAT she says interesting. For instance she gave Oliver Stone's Alexander a 'rotten' but gave the special director's cut DVD release, Alexander Revisited: Final Cut, a 'fresh.' It's interesting to see why.

All I'm saying is to read past the ratings and stuff that you WANT to read (oooh it's fun! go see it!)... and just read what they're really saying. Even if you ultimately disagree with it.

Just out of curiosity. To those that have seen it. I have noticed lately with quite a few movies (X-3, Epic Movie, Live free Or Die Hard) and others I can't think of that some of the shots in the trailer's/spots didn't make it into the final cut of the movie. Did all the footage from the trailers and spots make it into the final cut of the movie?

I avoided most of the spots to avoid further spoilers. So I can't answer that, sorry.

Geez, I'm getting more and more excited. A lot of the reviews seem good.
