Peter Berg Says He’s Meeting with Writers for a Sequel to THE RUNDOWN; Looking to Team Dwayne Johnson with an Unnamed Actor

The other day, Steve did the press junket for Lone Survivor, and he sent me an e-mail asking if I had any questions for director Peter Berg. I didn’t, but I told Steve to tell Berg that I adore his 2003 action-adventure film, The Rundown. For those who haven’t seen it, it’s similar to Midnight Run in that a tough guy (Dwayne Johnson) has to retrieve a squirrelly, meeker guy (Seann William Scott), but Berg’s film distinguishes itself with exciting set pieces and delightful performances, especially from Chistopher Walken. It’s my favorite Peter Berg film, but after ten years, I had given up any hope of a sequel.

But other fans have kept that hope alive, and now their patience might be rewarded. Berg says he’s actively developing a sequel. Hit the jump for more on The Rundown 2 (unofficial title, but it feels good just to write that). Lone Survivor opens in limited release on December 27th and goes wide on January 10th.

Berg was tight-lipped on any details regarding the sequel, but the larger point is that he’s currently meeting with writers, and spoken with Johnson about coming back. Additionally, Berg has an actor in mind to co-star with Johnson, so that probably means that Scott is out.

As for when this film will happen, first they need to find the writers. In the meantime, Berg is attached to direct American Desperado starring Mark Wahlberg as super-criminal Jon Roberts, who was born into Mafia royalty, ran guns for the CIA, smuggled cocaine for the Medellin cartel, and brushed elbows with the likes of Richard Pryor and Jimi Hendrix. While all of this is well and good, does it involve dual-wielding shotguns? I doubt it.
Here’s the transcript of Steve talking with Berg about The Rundown sequel:
Collider: Does it ever get old with people asking you about a sequel to The Rundown?
PETER BERG: No, never. And we just met with writers, so we’re trying to do it.
Shut. Up. I did not expect that answer.
BERG: (laughs) I really want to do it. I’ve talked to Dwayne. I have an actor in mind that I can’t say that I want to work with Dwayne on it, and we want to do it.
Really?
BERG: Yeah, we’re meeting with writers now.
So you have an idea?
BERG: Yes.
Son of a *****. I think fans are going to be very excited.
BERG: I want to do it.
I really want this to happen.
BERG: I do too.
If you haven’t seen The Rundown, and want a taste, here’s one of the fight scenes:

Please, Peter Berg, pair Dwayne with Chris Pratt for The Rundown 2.

When The Rock still had his hair. I knew even back then it was a matter of time before he had to shave his hair due to his receding hairline. For a while I thought he had surgery done because his hairline stopped receding. But I guess it was just a new haircut that was able to hide it better.

Welp, this wins the award for Most Random Sequel Ever.
Here's hoping for Evolution 2 with David Duchovny.

It's amazing how different Dwayne looks now.

The Rundown should be an ongoing franchise for The Rock until he is too old to do it. The premise, a guy gets paid to bring someone from point A to point B, is pretty basic and a lot can be done with it.

I don't see why he'd still be a bounty hunter. The man just wanted to open his own restaurant. He went through alot of s*** for that $250,000.

$250,000 was worth more then. It was '03.

Wow, what a random sequel this would be, the original was okay, an early action movie for The Rock but it was nothing more than that. Not sure I would see a sequel.

Johnson has a lot of movies on his hands at the min though, G.I Joe 3, and I believe he is in F&F7 as well.

As for Berg, personally if he was going to do any sequel I would prefer him to do Hancock 2.

Talk about running out of ideas. Out of all the movies Hollywood can greenlight and this is one of them?

The first was good, but such a random movie to make a sequel to. I will remain skeptical.

The weird thing in this day and age are the gaps between sequels. Independence Day, Sin City, Beverly Cop, Top Gun, and the list goes on. If you can't reboot it, then make a sequel I guess.

the first was a very entertaining movie. i dont see why it would be strange to have a sequel. i could watch 5 sequels with the character Beck

It's strange that they waited THIS long for a sequel.

Rock was busy with disney movies for 6 year old girls. what was he thinking?

I'm sure it'll be easy to explain. Restaurants have a high failure rate and the economy went south, easy to see a situation that forces the Rock to return to a life he tried to leave behind in order to make ends meet.

He's also (apparently) starring in the 'SEAL Team 666' movie.

Yep, they can show Gordon Ramsay shutting them down at the start of the sequel.
