When I get a 'pat' it's honor and the knowledge that I will have some effect on the world while you watch.

I'm glad that you have an effect on the world. Same here, I do my best to inspire my students to go out and make a better world. To belittle that would be absurd.

When it comes to teaching in the classroom, I leave politics at the door. It's not my view of a better world, it's theirs.

I hope that's true. Let them make up their own minds about such ideas.

Now it's very feasible that you could teach them both sides of any argument/view point.

It's better if children learn for themselves with guidance certain issues.
