Horror The Scream Franchise Thread

Let the legacy characters stay in minor background roles, keep the action far away from Woodsboro and BRING BACK STU, YOU COWARDS!!! :argh:

Let the legacy characters go. Anything more they'll just bog everything down and be obligatory. Their stories are done. Set it somewhere else and if you want to continue Sam or not have them be the focus.

I'm a little nervous about this. I liked the last movie but it had its weaknesses that I doubt will be improved this time around. Write a better core mystery and give the killer a better motivation.

Wish List

- 2 rival Ghostfaces
- 1 Ghostface unmasked/dies [Act II]
- No... Gale
- Sidney... really minor role
- winter/snowy setting
- (or) Halloween setting
- Red Right Hand [always]
- No... Stab references/homages
- Meeks/Meeks
- Jenna Ortega, baby

I think this is very doable given that the last one was an intentional subversion of all of that, in a way.

Hopefully with the requel stuff out of the way, this can just focus even more on being a kickass Scream film.

I do wonder what the focus of the commentary will be this time. I actually do think there's a lot of meat left on the bone of state of fandom discussion-- in a way Scream 5 only kind of scratched the surface there.

I'm surprised how against everyone is seems to be about Neve returning.

We don't know in what capacity yet. We don't know the story.

To me, Neve IS Scream. She looks great. She kicked serious ass in the new movie. We also have a continuation of Billy Loomis' legacy happening here, so it's not like she's irrelevant in that. There is also an interesting dynamic with her and Sam because of that. I will wait and see how they execute it, but I'm not against her still being a part of the story in some way, at least on paper. They got the balance great in the new film where the OGs didn't overpower the new cast at all.

Jamie Lee Curtis is in all of the new Halloween trilogy and nobody seems to complain about that.

I still disagree with that, the execution was flawed in its intent. Even the commentary on fandom came off as superficial and reactionary which makes me suspicious they'll dig deep enough for whatever it is they're going for with a sequel.

With Neve Campbell coming back, I'm starting to get the sense this could become the thing Scream parodies. Sid's story is done. Unless they have something genius cooked up, she'll just hang around. I'm just very skeptical given the evidence of this movie.

Bring Kirby back from Scream 4.
Sam needs to die in the opening scene, the lead actress was the weakest link of the whole ensemble, so concentrate on Tara.
If you bring back Gale/Sidney give them more to do. Go all in or do nothing with them.

Sid must come back. Ghostface and Sidney are a package deal, IMO

Definitely looking forward to this. Scream is my favorite horror franchise next to Halloween.

Because Michael Myers has always been the same person and had a real connection to Laurie. GF is someone new each time.

If the commentary was only relegated to the post-reveal stuff, I'd probably agree, but I think it's woven into the film throughout enough that it works, and is more nuanced then it seems at first glance.

As far as writing a better, more fulfilling murder mystery, I'll choose to be optmistic and say I think they can pull it off-- or do something more bold and deviate from the formula somehow. And they have Kevin Williamson right there to bounce ideas off of from the jump this time.

It's still the same core slasher idea to me though. No matter who is behind the mask, Ghostface is a recurring presence, an evil that keeps coming back to haunt. That's part of the charm of the Scream franchise. It is still a love letter to slashers and horror, it just happens to take place in a world where those movies also exist.

Sidney and Gale are two of my favourite movie characters of all time but yeah I’m hoping they leave their characters out of this one or give them very minor roles. I think they’ve done everything they can with them and Scream 5 gave such a great closure/epilogue to their journeys. Of course I won’t be mad if they’re included in scream 6, but it felt very satisfying how their story seemed to come to a close in 5 and would hate to see that undone.

The argument about Jamie Lee Curtis being front and centre in the new halloween movies is actually my perfect example of what I don’t want to see. Maybe controversial but I find Laurie UNBEARABLE in the new Halloween movies and I’m someone who loves JLC. This new dark take on her character is so unlikeable and she was completely useless and irrelevant to everything happening in the most recent movie and was just there because she’s Laurie, I don’t want to see that for Sidney.

For the record I also don’t ever want Stu to come back and think that it’s one of the worst ideas they could go with. They need to keep things fresh and keep moving forward with NEW ideas. Some of the best parts of Scream 5 were the new characters and new ideas so lets have more of that. I would love a new setting/winter theme! Ghostface would look badass stabbing people in the snow

The pickings are really slim this time. The benefit of 4 and 5 coming out so long between their predecessors is that enough time passed where horror and movies changed and pop culture changed. This soon, the only thing I see left is the corporate homogenized commentary and killing the franchise commentary. They shouldn't be held to this, they could have something, but it's the only things I can think of.

Source of this article is not reliable. Will wait for an official trade to announce anything like this.

As for Sidney, I do think it’s time to move past the Prescott storyline and I don’t think she needs to be an integral part of the action/finale. I imagine her or Gale appearing in cameos or in more of an “advisory/mentor” role to the new core cast. If this is going to be a new trilogy, I’d rather Sidney come back for the final film. It would have more impact.

However, if they want her back and Neve wants to come back, I’m willing to wait and see what they come up with. I just don’t want to see the same formula repeated in the next film. “Sidney appears halfway through and shows up in the finale to help save the day”…. Do something different this time.
