Horror The Scream Franchise Thread

Saying Scream 3 is the weakest entry or a bad movie is crazy when Scream 4 exists!
4 is a fun time. 3 being considered the worst one is the general consensus anyway, if you look at any ranking of the series out there from Rotten Tomatoes to Entertainment Weekly most of them have 3 firmly in last place.

Jay and Silent Bob should've been part of Scream 3's main cast!

How does 6 go off the rails?

7 felt setup for what we got in the final act. Actually hunting for the killers. One of the reasons Sidney and her crew sucks, is they're very passive, letting the same formula play out over and over again, and being shocked when it's the most obviously people doing the killings. The exception is hilariously 5, by the far superior creative crew. The last act of 6 rocks hard, because the sisters fight back. Not in some token sense. That is what I would've expected from 7 on a whole film scale. Bascially Sam becomes Van Helsing. I get the vibe this will be the setup for Ready or Not 2.
I do like the hunting for the killers aspect but I think 6 for me has the worst ghostkiller(s) reveal and I think the movie was great up until the last section and then it just dropped down 2 tiers or so. Chad being stabbed 36 times and then rolled out like he just took one in the leg was like the cherry on top. And I know Dewey got stabbed a lot in the past as well but you don't have to repeat the mistakes of the past when you can change things up.

I did use the word detour kinda light heartedly but considering they are going back to the source that's pretty much how 5 and 6 will look in the overall picture. Aside from making Sam the daughter of Billy Loomis (which I always thought was really lame and made no sense) I don't really have any strong thoughts on the sisters - like I said earlier I think they're fine. A franchise like this needs some new blood and faces over the films. I think you could argue they gave the OG characters too much plot armor over the years and I was bummed when they did the same with the core-4 in 5 and 6.

At the end of the day I think the lack of Craven and Williamson is what makes the difference for me. Now the guys who picked up and ran the ship for 5 and 6 did do a great job, I think many others would have done far worse. But it's like if one of your favorite bands replaced their singer and lead songwriter. The music could still be great and the next few albums might still be good but it would be different. All in all I still think 5 is pretty good and 6 is pretty good up until the finale which I did not like. (mostly because of the identities of the killers) :)

It looks alright, but it also doesn't have that particular "hook" like 6 had with the New York setting or the Ghostface shrine. I hope there's more to it than what was shown here and they're holding some surprises back. I trust the writers, they seem to understand the franchise after the last two movies.

Ehh. You guys can say what you want about the Carpenter sisters from 5 and 6 but their absence from this is going to be glaring. I'll also be pirating this movie once an HD version hits the internet for what they did to Melissa Barrera.

I was more excited to see where they would go after VI than this.
Yeah, me too. The Carpenter sisters brought a lot of freshness to the series and now it looks like they reached a dead end. I'm still hopeful though, 6 movies in and they haven't let me down yet.

I'm that guy who wanted the 7th movie to be about Stu coming back for Sidney's family way before any of the controversy happened (don't @ me), so this looks like it'll be a treat for me. Whether or not it's truly him, the movie is clearly positioning itself for that to be the elephant in the room, regardless of which way it goes and that alone is a fun ride that I'm happy to go on. This could break the franchise rules and actually just not have the killer be a mystery for once (IE- "I'm not hiding this time"). Or at least only a partial mystery. Or not, and just use it as a huge red herring (again...).

I'm relieved that the direction looks solid. The between the walls sequence looks like it has potential. I'm rooting for Williamson to deliver.

I do hope this film can actually serve as a true finale for Sidney and Gale and it moves on from them if it must continue. But I'm good with one last Sidney-focused film. I just love Neve in the role, it's that simple. It's not just nostalgia, it's a sense of continuity and an emotional anchor to these films that I think is nice to have threaded in. I care more about Ghostface threatening to kill someone's kids in front of them because it's Sidney. The stakes are higher because of the decades of investment in and affection for the characters. That's just how it is. I would never want Scream to become total anthology style where it's a new unrelated group of people every time, or fully rebooted. That's why I couldn't really muster up caring much about the MTV series, even though the first season wasn't bad per se. Scream is a bit of a slasher soap opera at heart.

I also still think there's a chance for Melissa and Jenna to come back for a future film if this succeeds and the franchise continues. The series has already shown it is ok bringing back characters after skipping a film or two. Dumb politics aside, Spyglass only cares about money like any media company and I think they can easily reverse course, do some PR spin and throw money at them to come back to give a follow-up film some sort of credibility and if they feel the demand is there (assuming they even want to come back). Or the twins survive again and become the new torch-bearers. Them being in there feels like the bridge isn't fully burned, at least creatively. From a story standpoint, I definitely think there is unfinished business with the Carpenters' mother. Her absence was hugely suspicious in 5 & 6, and I just got the feeling that she would tie into some larger overarching plot thread. An anonymous character who mothered Billy Loomis' secret lovechild is just waiting to be revisited.

Hell yeah let’s go love the Scream franchise. I like the idea of someone turning Stu’s house into a Stab themed Airbnb.

It's a fun meta beat too since the actual house is a Scream attraction on Air BnB. That could make for a pretty dope opening sequence.

I'm beyond certain that bridge has been burned. The fact that Spyglass was willing to incur the PR nightmare by getting rid of Barrera to begin with gives little indication that they'd suddenly flip-flop and bring her back. And given the reason why they let go of Barrera, she has no reason to come back.

IF they bring Melissa Barrera back, they have a nice oportunity of making her the killer and reveal her at the end. It has been stablished that she can very easily become one. That would be a fun surprise/reveal.

They're idiots, but that fact also just shows that they're absolutely shameless, and stranger things have happened in this crazy industry. Look what just happened with Neve between the last few films. Not the same exact situation I know, but money always talks in the end. I would also totally respect if they wanted to nothing to do with anything with the name Spyglass attached to it and told them to kiss off even if they begged for them back. But frankly, if actors were taking projects based solely on the corporate ethics of the companies involved and not their own career/creative interests, I'm not sure we'd have much of a mainstream film industry at all. Gotta remember that the creatives involved here are friends and this BS had nothing to do with them.

Or this movie tanks, they sell the rights to another company at some point down the line and someone else brings them back. I just have a hunch we haven't seen the last of the Carpenter sisters if this franchise is to keep going in the longrun. The rights issues are somewhat complex between Spy Glass, Paramount and Lion's Gate currently so who knows what it'll be in the future. If I was their agent I'd say wait some years until it becomes a bit more of a nostalgia play and if/when the phone rings then get a bag. It's not like they've recast the roles or are retconning their films.

I'm curious if the people boycotting 7 because of Melissa Barrera also boycotted 6 because of how the studio treated Neve Campbell? Not that it really matters, just curious. Scream 7 will probably make 4-5x its budget regardless and we'll get an 8th movie greenlit within 2 weeks of 7 releasing.

The first one came out when I was a senior in HS, and I think Neve was still on Party Of Five then .

The trailer looks okay to me , but it's nothing that's gonna get me hyped to rush out to the theater to see it.

I'm mean , it's always nice to see Neve Campbell , and I've literally been watching Courteney Cox since she was on Family Ties and was in Masters Of The Universe  .

I'm frankly much more interested in how Zoomers ,and younger people who came into the series through Jenna Ortega and Melissa Berrera , respond to the trailer ,and if it gets them hyped.

I suspect GenXer's like me will like it , but I'm more curious about their kids ,or Grandkids , being interested in seeing Scream 7.

To me, that will be the test .

If they turn out in full force, and really get hyped for the new film , then Spyglass can probably rest easier .

If the young people are "Meh" to it , that's a problem , in a time where people are more than willing just to wait a few weeks for stuff to stream if they think it's "Meh" or not worth their time.

There's an ocean of difference between someone not returning because they're being underpaid and someone being fired for speaking out against genocide.
