Carbon fiber probably. Like the external shell of the Robocop suit.

How come nobody is screaming "That's not red, it's burgundy" like they did when the first photo of Brandon Routh in costume was released?

I think it's because Superman's suit is known to be a strong bright red, like that of the American flag, to represent the character's optimism. Darker colors would contradict that. As for Iron Man, he usually wears a dark crimson, so the difference between dark red and darker red is not very noticeable.

Another thing, for those arguing that directors should/need to adapt the looks of characters exactly as the source material, explain why Favreau in interviews has stated that the Mandarin would be UPDATED for this movie!

This probably has more to do with the fact that the Mandarin may come off as racially offensive to some people, NOT because they don't appreciate the original comic design.

Still looks like artwork to me and not a photo. Look at the reflections on the forearms and shins. Seems painted and not realistic.

i htnk itis normal that they use desaturated colours for hte movies. it makes the movie IMO more serious. spiderman....yes i know someoen will mention spiderman. its a bright funny movie. spiderman 3 is bleeeeeeeeeeh
