Visit to the set of “Supergirl” brought the first face-to-face meeting between Tom King, Bilquis Evely and Matheus Lopes

The creative team behind “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” traveled to London to visit the set of the comic-inspired film. The film is one of the bets of the new DC Universe in theaters, directed by James Gunn . The visit, last week, resulted in the first face-to-face meeting between the American screenwriter Tom King and the Brazilians Bilquis Evely and Matheus Lopes , respectively responsible for the drawings and colors of the comic. Until then, the trio spent the long years of their partnership exchanging professional emails.

“If Mat and Bil met me and thought, ‘Oh my God, this guy is horrible,’ in person… I’m so desperate to keep seeing their emails in my inbox, seeing the transcendent heights they’re reaching and how I can somehow contribute to that. It was mostly nerves for the sake of it,” the screenwriter explained, adding humorously, “So I completely disguised my personality! A little joke, but based on the truth. I just admire what they do so much , and being with them in person was an absolute joy,” King said.

Speaking to Fora do Plástico, Bilquis reinforced the strictly professional contact that has existed throughout the years of their partnership. “ Among so many possibilities, our first meeting was at a very extraordinary moment. We have been working together for years and, surprisingly, we have never called each other or anything like that . Our dialogue was limited to very direct emails with only the information necessary for our projects.” Despite this, the artist already felt close to Tom King. “I spent so much time reading and rereading his scripts, it was as if I knew him very well, it was as if we were already great friends . That’s what I told him when we met and he agreed . Meeting him under these circumstances made everything more special and magical ,” she concludes.

Colorist Matheus Lopes also felt like he already knew King , even if only through the internet, by following his visits to podcasts to promote the team's comics. “But face-to-face contact is much more human, natural and rich . It was really cool and I hope to meet him again in the future. It was a great pleasure to meet Tom King after working together for so long,” he told Fora do Plástico.

It’s clear that the team’s vision for Supergirl resonated beyond just comic critics. In January 2023, James Gunn and Peter Safran revealed that one of the first films in their ambitious slate for a revived DC movie universe would be Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, specifically drawing on the book’s interpretation of Kara’s struggles. For the team behind the book—especially as trade collections began selling out just from Gunn’s mention—the news came out of nowhere.

“When the news about the film came out, it was so great, because I knew people would turn to the comic,” Evely said.

“That the announcement happened was very shocking. We were in Brazil, figuring out the next steps,” Lopes added. “After a while, it becomes so distant. Now it’s finally becoming real to us, visiting the set. Things are as real as they can get. It was something so far away, and now it’s really close, I love it.”

“It’s real but it’s still surreal. Because it’s so crazy,” Evely continued. “I felt a great sense of comfort [visiting the set], because we saw how hard such talented people were working on this movie. We gave all of our hearts to it in the book, so it’s really nice to see that they are giving their hearts to the movie.”

King already had some experience working in the realm of DC film—he had previously worked with Ava DuVernay on the since-cancelled New Gods film, and in the new era of DC beyond Supergirl, he had worked in early phases of the Lanterns TV show. But that didn’t change how seeing Woman of Tomorrow be part of that vision felt. “I mean, I try to be as cynical as I can about everything—mostly to keep up with my children so we can be on the same vibe,” King joked. “When they first showed us the scope of it, I literally… tears in my eyes. I was trying to play cool, because there are a lot of producers and people I wanted to look tough with. Bilquis and Matheus are there. So I’d subtly wipe away my tears. If anyone asks: I was cool and chill.”

So interested in seeing how Hardy shoots this. WoT has a delicacy to its grandeur and scale and coloring and the way he shot exteriors and wides in Annihilation, Fallout, Devs, Men, Civil War and Ex Machina kinda live in that same realm. . S***, even Men lol plus he's very angular and sharp. I just hope Gillepsie steps up to the plate for such a big film, and this script is as good as its been said to be.

The cast is also ridiculously on point. I can't wait to see how it rounds out.

That is the suit I expected. Just like the comic book suit for Woman of Tomorrow. Comic book accurate for sure.

Has it been confirmed that Krypto is in this movie?

Also appears to have the thick belt that the comic suit had.

On first glance I thought that was her mid-section & she was wearing a sort of crop top like upper half :funny:

But it definitely looks more like a large belt like the comic upon seeing the little video clip or if it's not a belt for the suit, perhaps it's a harness for some sort of flight rig(?).

Not sure if that's Lobo or not it's hard to get a good look, but they're wielding what looks like an axe.

Maybe we will get some official photos now that this has leaked. Maybe they're trying to wait for Superman day idk.

Has it been confirmed that Krypto is in this movie?
If you mean by the studio and such, no, I don't think so, but considering Krypto is in the Woman of Tomorrow comic, I wouldn't be surprised. Plus, Variety had this line back in 2023:

‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ Taps Ana Nogueira to Write DC Studios Feature

Ana Nogueira is set to write “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” which is being developed by DC Studios. The film, centering on Superman’s cousin Kara Zor-El and her superdog Krypto, has yet to be attached to a director.

Where sure, it could be speculation based on Krypto being in the comic, they'd have no reason to put that line in there if it wasn't going to be the case.
