The Supergirl News and Discussion Thread

Think about the age Clark is when he meets her, and think about her age when she meets him. Then add in who he is to the world by that point. Even if he tried she likely wouldn't have let him.

If you know people with trauma you would know they dont always want you to be there to lean on.

This. Kara comes to earth and Clark is revered whereas she feels like an afterthought. It’s funny how Lex finds Clark to be more Kryptonian than man. But to Kara he is more man than Kryptonian.

Nothing new to add.

GotG ft. Supergirl/Gunn-lite

Looks good enough

Didn't give away that much story which is nice.

Optimistic to watch it. Still hoping that she and Clark have a scene(s) together.

He only tries to see the good in everyone.

Hopefully we do see more *ahem* "colours" because WoT was quite colourful.

One thing I really liked about the trailer is they actually promote/refer the source material at the end. I think CBM trailers should do this more often.

New quotes from the press event with Gunn, director Gillespie, and Alcock:

I'm not sure if this is a hot take, but the classic pop needledrop in trailers trend really needs a rest. Which ironically may have started with the first Guardians. There have been some great ones that really worked, but it's beyond tired at this point IMO...I'd even take BRAAAMMMS back for a minute if that's what it took while they figured out a new trope, lol.

The movie itself looks okay/hopefully fun but had to get that off my chest. That said, I do understand the critique that it just kinda feels like GOTG 4. It doesn't look bad at all, but that kind of hold it back from feeling like something truly fresh and worth getting actively excited about for me.

The biggest compliment I have for the visuals is that it’s not shot by Henry Brahms and therefore does not make me feel like I'm being waterboarded by Fortnite. Everything about the book has a cool, epic fantasy IN SPACE energy to me that neither the tone of the trailer nor the visuals convey, but that isn't inherently

Funny enough, I actually think GOTG2(shot by Henry Braham) actually captured the exotic space fantasy aesthetics of WoT better than the actual movie adapting it does.

It would be nice if they stopped doing the annoying edgy humour. Not to be a broken record, but it just does not work for me in these movies. I don’t need dog pissing jokes in superhero stories! Or jokes about how a woman is a dumb bimbo with nasty toes!

I would be unreservedly fine with these movies being full comedies, it’s not that, there’s just a weird disconnect between the mostly family friendly tone and gross edgy Gunn humour.
I dont like it either but from what I gather we are the minority.

I can take it here or there but its just everywhere. That and being "Meta" are so played out.

that's what i like about the new DC movie trailers - they'll end it with ads for the comics that inspired it. get the kids to read more of the source material.

Thought the trailer looked good overall. Really very little to add, had big Guardians vibes from some visuals & tone of the teaser, few good soundbites, good Lobo reveal.

All in all, I liked it. Eased some of my fears as to what exactly they were going for after seeing the Superman cameo which was sort of presented without any background or context.

Minor note, but the English public school accent for Ruthye (presumably Eve Ridley's own) is probably going to give the character a different vibe than what you'd imagine for the source material.

I liked the trailer. Really didn't get any GotG vibes, but then I wasn't looking for it. If I have to lose at getting a good Superman movie, at least I can hope to get a good Supergirl movie out of it.
My viewing order just may be...
Superman 79
Superman 2
Superman Returns
Supergirl 26

Any trailer that starts pissing on Superman is a great thing to see. Lawd.

Seems like fun.

Give her that damn sword and it gives me future Trunks vibes. I dig it.

So he definitely got that early access screening, I'm sure. Alcock's a great actress, sure, if House of the Dragon is any indication, but to hear her compared to the MCU's leading stars? I would not bet money on hearing that, or it being plain hyperbole. Were similar things said about Corenswet in comparison to Downey Jr. and Evans? If so, I missed that. If not...then ViewerAnon really wants the Twitter engagement.

Maybe I'm wrong and Alcock will be great, but on that level? Doubtful.

Why? VA is not one for hyperbole especially when it comes to what others are saying. If he was going to farm for engagement that tweet was not the way to do it...he would need to be more vague and loud about it. ("You cant believe what I am hearing!!! I will exain another time!!!!)

I love Superman but the story is basic and really just a 4 color spectacle like a goid Superman comic. Woman of Tomorrow is a story with depth and realt tragedy and if it is done right is going to be rather epic. If Milly hits it right...she will blow David out of the water.

Everyone knows how negative I am about the DCU and Gunn's overall casting choices so believe me when I say Alcock is absolutely a massive, potential movie star level talent. Corenswet is a good actor but Alcock is a great actor. I was lucky enough to see her on stage in The Crucible a couple years back and she is absolutely electric.

Maybe she's not a lightning in a bottle RDJ who is his whole own subcategory of actor for a variety of reasons but she's absolutely a better actor than Evans for instance. It's not even close.

Or he'd leak Bradley Cooper being cast as Jor-El well before the movie came out, which he actually did.

Again, I have no doubt about Alcock's prowess as an actress, but comparing her performance to that of MCU's two leads- a comparison that we've rarely, if ever, seen for comic book films- that's a stretch that I don't even think Reed Richards would make. It'd be one to simply say 'She had a great performance,' but going as far as saying 'Oh, she's as good as RDJ and Chris Evans,' when not even Corenswet, who is also a great actor, got those comparisons, yes, I'm going to wonder if ViewerAnon just heard that from the pocket dimension.

Alcock has had a ton of hype around her since she debuted, not sure why this is remotely shocking? She's clearly a better actor than Corenswet, that isn't a jab at Corenswet - I don't really like him in Superman but everything that rubs me the wrong way is clearly Gunn's direction/writing, I absolutely adore him in the screentest where he's more understated - it's just a testament to her talent, so it really shouldn't be surprising if she's getting wilder comparisons early on than he did.

I like Evans as Cap a lot but its not an incredible feat of acting that's hard to match lol. It's the third best Chris performance in the MCU.

I love Cap but Evans did absolutely nothing extraordinary in the role to be seen as some kind of untouchable standard (he mainly just got a pair of surprisingly good movies) and could easily be surpassed especially by someone with boatloads of talent like Milly. RDJ just being RDJ instead of anything resembling Tony Stark isn’t some huge acting achievement either. VA didn’t say Supergirl was going to be as popular as those characters, so I don’t see anything hyperbolic about any claim that she’d be as good or better. If faithful to the book, this is a meatier role than either of those guys got in their first outings so it makes perfect sense to me she’d make a huge impression.

Corenswet didn’t get that kind of claim because Superman already had his RDJ/Evans (and better than either, for the record), in Christopher Reeve. Let’s not act like it’s a slight on him. No shade to Helen Slater but Supergirl has never had that kind of spotlight/performance that makes people sit up and take notice and will always be thought of first for this character moving forward, so I think VA is just saying, this is absolutely it.

That's the other big thing - assuming the movie at least captures her characterization from the book well this is much more of an acting showcase for Alcock than The First Avenger was for Evans or Superman was for Corenswet. Which makes the RDJ comparison land frankly because what's great about the first Iron Man is that it is a movie built entirely around a performance and performer. Tony and Kara are both big, messy, showy roles.

Do gotta disagree with RDJ though, the fusion of the character with RDJ's own life and history is electric especially early on. It gets a lot flatter the longer the MCU drones on and he stops being "RDJ the wild comeback story" and "RDJ the Brand", especially because the character completely loses his edge which takes away a lot of what makes him interesting (I really only like him in the solo movies and the Whedon Avengers), but I do think he'll always be a pretty singular performance for the early MCU.
