The Thing by John Carpenter

jack burton, snake plissken, elvis.

nobody should ever play these characters..except for kurt russell.
Bruce Campbell did a passably good Elvis in Bubba Ho-Tep so I would exempt him.

I wonder if we'll ever get a sequel to The Thing, and I'm ignoring that awful prequel.

All I have to say is, one of the best horror sci-fi films of all time, end small rant.

Its amazing how well the effects have stood the test of time, even now, nothing in the movie looks particularly fake, compare that to some 90's movies full of CGI and it shows you how good the effects in The Thing truly were.

I read about how they were so realistic they had people leaving the theater disgusted/horrified at the screening. That was a little too real for some of them at the time.

^That doesnt surprise me, the majority of it looks real today 31 years later, imagine back then!

There's only one part of one scene I can think of that's comically bad and it's when the Thing grabs a guy by the head and shakes him around during the heart attack/monster mouth attack. It's clearly a dummy being used by the way it lifelessly flops around. Everything else in that scene was very well executed though.

I'm gonna add nothing new to this thread, because I'm also here to gush about The Thing. Smart, scary, amazingly shot, Russell, David, the FX. It was so good, it gave Carp skin cancer. That's how close to Godhood he got.

We should get a sequel and make sure it has pratical effects just like Evil Dead remake

Aww man that would be awesome. Evil Dead may have sucked but that gore more than made up for for me

The Thing
Blade Runner
Empire Strikes Back
Alien

Something must of have been in the water or air in the early 80s. Sci-Fi was firing on all cylinders.

Yeah I know which part you mean, that scene as a whole is just so good though that that part doesnt bother me much. There are couple of other bits which look fake as well, but the majority of it looks better than many movies made 20 years later.

I absolutely love The Thing. I actually liked the prequel, but too much CGI. It was a pretty good complementary piece.

The last rumor I heard of a true sequel with Russell and David returning was early 2000s. I wish we get it. Best sci-fi/horror film ever.

I liked that game. I almost finished it but never got to the end due to a confluence of events distracting me. Really should finish it some time.

I would like to play that one, one day.

I heard that back in the 2000s SyFy (then SciFi) was gonna do a four hour miniseries that was going to be a sequel to the film.

^^ That would have been cool. Keith David would have probably done it too.

I have nothing else to add other than this is one of the best ****ing movies ever made and its usage of hats is a master class in badass.

Shout! Factory Announces New Extras For Upcoming Release of John Carpenter’s The Thing
Erik Amaya said:
Shout! Factory will be releasing a new Blu-ray edition of John Carpetner‘s The Thing in September and recently announced a number of new special features to be added to the two-disc set.

First, the film will be presented using a new 2K scan of the inter-positive supervised and approved by director of photography Dean Cundey and a new 4.1 sound mix (audio format to be determined) from the the original 70MM Six Track Dolby Stereo soundtrack. Cundey will also provide a new audio commentary while new featurettes include interviews with the men of Outpost 31 — Keith David, Thomas Waites, and Peter Maloney to name a few — editor Todd Ramsay, visual effects artists Peter Kuran and Susan Turner, special make-up effects artist Rob Burman and Brian Wade, supervising sound editor David Lewis Yewdall, special sound effects designer Alan Howarth and other members of the crew.

The set will also include the John Carpenter/Kurt Russell commentary track and other special features from earlier releases. It will also come with the ninety-two minute US broadcast version of The Thing, which must be a trip to watch with the gorier effects removed. But I imagine the film is still moody, chilling and funny even if they cut around heads and hands being eaten.

The Thing: Collector’s Edition will be available from Shout! Factory on September 20th.

So glad I haven't picked this up on Blu-Ray yet. I don't think I even have it on DVD. Something to look forward to later this year.
