The Venus Project recently updated their website and I noticed a section for their current projects...

http://www.thevenusproject.com/get-involved

If you're not aware of what The Venus Project is, they're a group looking to build an experimental city that shows the benefits of what a resource based economy would be like, powered by clean energy, with self-contained homes with their own thermal generators, city construction carried out by robotic equipment, and high speed maglev trains for transportation.

Just click on current projects, and you can see the various positions that they're advertising for.

What's this? I thought I was the only person promoting TVP in SHH:wow:
I have already signed in the Graphic Designer section.

This sounds like the kind of thing that works great for about a decade before all the citizens go mad and start eating each other.

A decade might be pushing it, since they apparently need vital roles like architects and engineers filled, but oh boy, they've got graphic designers (of which I'm gonna assume Alex is just one of many). To accomplish something like this, you've gotta do away with the superfluous career options and focus on the necessary ones.

Um, yeah obviously there are many graphic designers, but I am the only one in my country at least that helped with some logo designs and poster materials for the greek chapter of TVP. I have links and all I can provide you.

That's a huge problem. Obviously this sort of project attracts all sorts of artistic types, but that's the exact sort of people you do not need if you're looking to build a new society from scratch. Practical skills and jobs are the first and most important things you need to fill for something like this. Being a graphic designer is cool if that's your thing, but it's not going to help society.

What on earth are you talking about?

Of course the practical jobs are necessary.

And they also need people to publicize and market their ideas. The word isn't gonna spread by itself.

Wow, talk about cynicism.

So what happens if this project gets off the ground and the graphic designers can no longer contribute?

Do you know what this project is about? It comes across as though you haven't taken the time to look into it.

If the first test city gets off the ground, I'm sure there will still be a lot more work to do in regards to presenting what its all about to tourists and people around the world.

You realize that the ultimate goal is for cities to be managed so intelligently and efficiently, and resources to be shared intelligently, that people living in these cities can do whatever they want. Go back to University, change your career, or not work at all.

You guys are over thinking this too much. In this point, what is most important is spreading the message to the world with pictures and video, lectures etc things that designers and video editors can do. Also translators play a great part. As of now, the technical professionals cannot built any city, no matter how many of them will sign. There will be different transition stages and everything will come into place naturally.

So what happens if this project gets off the ground and the graphic designers can no longer contribute?

Um, we will gladly step aside and let the other technical professions take our place. No problemo.

What do you mean?

Are you guys intentionally trolling? Your comment literally makes no sense in the context of what the Venus Project is and what its trying to achieve.

We all saw what happened to Rapture. Is this really a good idea? :p

While the recurring criticism is correct - engineers, architects, and other related types are required for the facility-one of the larger and more important groups are missing. Who is going to build the city? Architects can design it, but at the end of the day, they are on the same boat as the graphic designers without people who will render their visions. Or, just as importantly, what about the maintenance crews? Having worked maintenance at a summer camp - which is a smaller, and more controlled version of this artificial utopia-I can say that this facility will not last a week without people to unclog the toilets, repair the water lines, take the garbage out, and mop the floors.

The first connection I drew was not to Bioshock, but to the city of the future from Mask of the Phantasm.

Now I'll be cynical. That will never happen. Ever. To think it can is to misunderstand Homo sapiens entirely.

Uh oh, someone said the magic words!

You would gladly get fired?

Ok you clearly responded to the post without taking a look at what a Recourse Based Economy stands for and what TVP vision is. Obviously I won't get fired because I won't be working for an employer. I am doing a voluntary work. People won't have to maintain or repair toilets or garbage, as it will all be automated and repaired by machines.

lol. That "human nature" thing again. You may think whatever you want. Truth is history will go its course regardless of what we think will happen. And I am sure a "utopian" society will be a natural evolution for humanity.

Those links might clear up things a bit.

Check the 4 minute video in bbc link that explains a lot about the technical details of this project and how it can become reality.

Is is possible to create a radically different society? One where material possessions are unnecessary, where buildings are created in factories, where mundane jobs are automated?

Would you want to live in a city where the main aim of daily life is to improve personal knowledge or enjoy hobbies?

Some may think it is idealistic, but 97-year old architect Jacque Fresco is convinced his vision of the future is far better than how we live today.

The Venus Project Simplified: We simply want a world that isn't restricted by politics, money and elitism and doesn't destroy the earth for profit, we want to ensure through our existing technological capability that every human being is fed, clothed, housed and has access to clean renewable energy and a relevant education without having to "Earn It"
