VR Gaming Getting Better? - The Rundown - Electric Playground
748 views 9 hours ago Published on 09/28/2018
Today in the Rundown, Victor Lucas gives us his thoughts on the big VR announcements from Oculus, including their new games and new headset the Oculus Quest! We also find out how mouse and keyboard controls are coming to the Xbox One, and take a look at the new X-Men movie Dark Phoenix!

Oculus Quest VR headset coming Spring 2019 for $399 – but it isn’t for PC gamers 22 hours ago

Oculus Quest, a VR headset that doesn’t require a PC to function, has been announced for a Spring 2019 launch. The standalone headset will cost $399, and features totally wireless control with no external sensors required. All the rendering is dealt with on the headset itself, potentially marking Oculus’ departure from the PC space for the time being.

Gamers have been waiting on the next-gen of the Oculus Rift headset ever since the first headset left development and went into volume production. Facebook subsidiary Oculus, however, has decided to take another route with its latest headset, instead favouring the all-in-one virtual reality experience to one tethered to a powerful gaming PC.

The Oculus Quest features a 1600 x 1440 per eye display, built-in audio via two speakers within the headband, a battery of unknown capacity, and 64GB of internal storage. All the motion is controlled via two Touch controllers and the headset’s own inside-out tracking, named Oculus Insight, powered by four ultra-wide angle sensors on the exterior of the device. Think of the Oculus quest as a high-end Oculus Go, the VR company’s first attempt at a standalone virtual reality device.

Oculus, along with other big players in VR, are all desperately trying to get more users into headsets and enthralled within virtual reality. The Oculus Quest is an attempt to widen its audience by removing the barrier to entry that a capable gaming PC can pose to a wide consumer base.

Oculus moves away from PC VR with the Quest, but “would not rule out” a Rift Pro
19 hours ago
The co-founder of Oculus, Nate Mitchell, has indicated that the virtual reality company has not forgotten about the professional VR headset space. Speaking to us at a pre-OC5 event, Mitchell confirmed the company wasn’t making any announcements in the high-end VR space, but when asked about rivalling HTC’s Vive Pro he confirmed Oculus “would not at all rule that out”.

It’s not the confirmation of new shiny tech that gamers might’ve been hoping for, but it’s a sign that the company, which announced a brand new standalone VR headset this week, isn’t totally giving up on PC headsets powered by a connection, whether tethered or otherwise, between the headset and a PC with a discrete graphics card.

Oculus Quest is the latest headset from Facebook’s virtual reality arm, but it’s a purely standalone device and doesn’t require a connection to your gaming PC. That leaves the Rift,Read more

Published 9 hours ago. 38 comments.

Build Toy-Con VR Goggles, a Toy-Con Blaster, and more.

Nintendo has announced Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit for Switch, which combines the physical and digital gameplay of Nintendo Labo with basic virtual reality technology to create a siimple and shareable virtual reality experience.

The $39.99 “Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit – Starter Set + Blaster” and complete $79.99 Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit will be available in stores on April 12. Two expansion sets priced at $19.99 each will be sold exclusively at Nintendo.com.

Here is an overview of the kit, via Nintendo:

Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit offers six new Toy-Con creations to build, including the Toy-Con VR Goggles, which combine with the other creations to allow players to interact with the virtual world through imaginative real-world actions. Fend off an alien invasion with the Toy-Con Blaster, visit a colorful in-game ocean and snap photos of the sea life with the Toy-Con Camera and so much more.

Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit encourages passing around the Toy-Con creations among a group of people so everyone in the room can easily join in on the fun. To help encourage this social gameplay, players simply slip the Nintendo Switch console into the Toy-Con VR Goggles and hold it up to their eyes to explore numerous games and experiences–no head strap needed.

“This new kit builds on the core tenets of Nintendo Labo–Make, Play and Discover–to introduce virtual reality in a way that’s fun and approachable for both kids and kids at heart,” said Doug Bowser, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “We wanted to design an experience that encourages both virtual and real-world interactions among players through passing around Toy-Con creations.”

Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kitt will launch in retail stores with two primary configurations, one that includes all Toy-Con creations and one that includes a smaller selection of projects to get started:

  • Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit: Available at a suggested retail price of $79.99, the complete Nintendo Labo: VR Kit includes the Nintendo Switch software and materials to build all six Toy-Con projects–the Toy-Con VR Goggles, Toy-Con Blaster, Toy-Con Camera, Toy-Con Bird, Toy-Con Wind Pedal and Toy-Con Elephant–as well as a Screen Holder and Safety Cap. It’s a good option for kids and families who want to dive in to the full experience.
  • Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit – Starter Set + Blaster:Available at a suggested retail price of only $39.99, the Starter Set includes the Nintendo Switch software, plus all the components to build the Toy-Con VR Goggles and Toy-Con Blaster, as well as the Screen Holder and Safety Cap. The Starter Set is a great entry point into the world of Nintendo Labo VR.
Players that own the Starter Set can purchase the following optional expansion sets to expand their experience:

  • Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit – Expansion Set 1: Available at a suggested retail price of $19.99, Expansion Set 1 includes the Toy-Con Elephant and Toy-Con Camera.
  • Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit – Expansion Set 2: Available at a suggested retail price of $19.99, Expansion Set 2 includes the Toy-Con Wind Pedal and Toy-Con Bird.
(The two expansion sets do not include the Toy-Con VR Goggles or Nintendo Labo: VR Kit software.)

The inventive Toy-Con Garage mode – included as part of all Nintendo Labosoftware – returns with Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit, offering basic programming tools for players to experiment with. More information about the experiences offered by Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit will be revealed in the future.

Valve confirms its VR headset will release in June

April 1, 2019 Valve Index is indeed set to launch in June.

After a set of Store pages for Valve Index – the VR headset – went live earlier today, Valve has confirmed the basics of what we’ve seen, including a June release date. (No details on the rumoured Half-Life prequel, sadly.)Read more

A Valve representative tells PC Gamer that the company is “still finalizing the targeted day in June to begin shipping units to customers.” The date on the store is June 15, though it seems that the specific day could shift around. The full reveal of the headset is scheduled for May 1 (as are pre-orders), and Valve suggests that the details are subject to change up until that point, but some other details were noted in the early listing.

The store page for the headset itself notes that it will have integrated headphones, and connections for DisplayPort 1.2 and USB 3.0. This page seems to suggest that a base station and specialised controllers will be sold separately, and may be required. Both accessories have their own store pages which list a somewhat more vague June release window. If those pages go down, you can see some captures courtesy of Wario64 on Twitter.

Rumoured specs for Valve’s VR headset included a 135° field of view, and the company’s VR-focused Knuckles controller had been making the rounds long before those reports even hit. Recent layoffs at Valve seemed to hit harder around the VR department, but those still at the company quickly came back to say work on VR is still continuing apace.

Valve has previously partnered with HTC on the Vive for its VR needs, but we’ve known the company has been working on its own VR solution for some time.

The real question, of course, is if that Half-Life prequel truly exists and exactly what it will entail – if the other reports have come up true, there’s yet hope.

Nintendo was really onto something very special when they first thought about the idea of Nintendo Labo, a software that allows players to make their own games and creative inventions using cardboard sheets that are included in the package.

Some players have gone as far as making their own cardboard constructs; making new things that further prove how versatile and fun Nintendo Labo can be; although, it is worth mentioning that the software isn't too user-friendly, but with a bit of practice any one can master it.

Today, Nintendo has released the first video in a new Nintendo Labo mini series called "Director Insights". In this first episode, Nintendo Labo Director Tsubasa Sakaguchi introduces us to the brand-new Toy-Con 04: VR Kit, as well as showing us some of the 64 VR Plaza mini games; promising that there will be even more of those mini games coming out in the future.
