The Witcher 3

There was one point I found the game overwhelming. Went back and started it over a year later, now it's one of my favorite games of last generation.

It is overwhelming to start. I had the same problem. I ended up restarting the game twice before playing through it completely. I have this problem of being a completest so I have a fear of missing something. Now I have beaten it multiple times.

Witcher is probably the best fantasy RPG series to date. Nothing else comes close to lore and gameplay.

Just seems like an overly busy central plot.

Does it? The central plot more or less seems pretty direct. Find Ciri before the Wild Hunt does. Or so, that's what I've gleaned from the trailers and such.

Usually, with the Witcher, the complications come from the things surrounding the plot via the interests of outside parties, ie: kings, sorcerers, etc.

I keep going back to Witcher 2...haven't beaten it yet...but I don't think I will. It's just so freaking boring...

Fair enough. Perhaps the open world nature of Witcher 3 will be enough to change that.

But, I think it might not. For the most part, the Witcher 2 is a pretty good example of what the Witcher is, as a universe. The novels themselves, the ones that have been translated into english at least, actually have less action. There's alot of building up to the violence, which is usually pretty brutal and gory. But, there's a lot world building and talking, and political intrigue. Before the games, the Witcher wouldn't have been considered an action genre at all.

Yeah, in alot of ways I think it can be intimidating. The combat can pretty much hand you your own ass on a platter if you don't prepare and dodge and mix things up. The storytelling is extremely well done, but it doesn't do any hand holding whatsoever. The quests doesn't hold your hand, either. The level up system can be confusing at first, until you actually play the game through it probably won't make complete sense. Ontop of all that, it's a fantasy-genre story based on a novel series.

It can definitely seem overwhelming for sure. But, like you...I think the further in I went, the more rewarding it was once I got over that. It's rewarding to pay attention to the storytelling and see the nuance and subtleties at play, the combat felt engaging once I learned to roll around and use Quen.

I think in a way, I kinda understand where alot of the hardcore Dark Souls players are coming from when touting the rewarding aspect of a game that doesn't hold your hand every step of the way.

Why is that ok for Dark Souls/Bloodeborne but not for the Witcher? I mean Iv heard the same thing from others about this series being daunting to new comers and the series seems to get "knocked" for it, yet Bloodborne isn't easy to get in to and its praised for it.

IDK, I get what CDPR is trying to do, but I don't feel this game or series needs to be "easier" to get in to. Take the time, learn the mechanics, read the lore, you'll be fine.

I never once found this series overwhelming. Different? Sure. Difficult? Yea. But never overwhelming. I just saw this immaculatly crafted world and just got lost in it from the jump. I was drawn to learn everything I could about it.

I have it digitally preordered.. Probably won't be able to play it until Tuesday afternoon.

I am not knocking it or saying it needs to be easier. It is after all my favorite current series after all. The biggest thing is how much story there is and how many little things there are to do. I still remember the first time I started, and was going through the little tent area. I was worried I would miss something. It is as simple as that.

Yea I wasn't really addressing you per-se, but just in general. Like when I hear some say something negative about the Witcher, it seems to always come back to the fact the game has a steep learning curve. And Iv never understood why that was an issue for some games and not for others.

I mean I agree, the first time I played it I was overwhelmed with everything. Hell I don't think I used any oils or potions until really late in the game just because I had really sink the time to learn that system. But I always felt that was a postive to the series. Just at how deep everything is.

Because DS/Bloodborne is cool to love. Seriously.. On the internet it's like you have to say you love those games or the cool internet jocks make fun of you.

Personally.. They annoy the hell out of me, the games that is.

I don't think it is the combat. I think that it is the games PC sensibilities. A lot of console players aren't use to that.

I understand being annoyed by them, but that are most certainly quality games.

I did feel overwhelmed with options when I played the 2nd one on my Xbox 360, but it's nothing unsurmountable.

I guess it's like starting a Zelda game with all the weapons, spells, tools and upgrades immediately at your disposal.

I do think they could pace that better.

What are you talking about, The Witcher 2? There is plenty of growth throughout.

Yes. I felt overwhelmed at the sheer amount of options.

I think with a keyboard and mouse, it's much easier to manage.

I played it with a control. I never wanted a mouse and keyboard.

That's because it's not. Not everyone is a great judge of quality.

Or they have a different opinion than you. The quality of a game and the entertainment value aren't mutually exclusive.

For like 99% of other games sure, not for the Witcher.
