But y'see, there's different ways to do special effects. Some are blatant and in your face, a la Geiko. Some are more subtle and done so well you don't realize how difficult and expensive the shot is.
Comparing Jurrasic Park to today's Discovery Channel graphics is not exactly fair to do, seeing as how JP was done AGES ago compared to DC's in technology years.
Take a look at a show like Lost or Alias.
Alias had special effects all over the place. The way they made LA look like anywhere and everywhere around the world took tons of effect $ and effort. It was done so well that you didn't even realize that half of what you were watching wasn't actually there.
With Lost, hell, just look at the plane crash scene. The first episode of Lost is the single most expensive hour of primetime TV for a show ever.
CGI with stuff like talking lizards and giant dinosaurs stick out to you because we KNOW that is an effect shot the moment we see it, cause lizards don't actually talk and dinosaurs aren't still living. But you'd be suprised if you look around TV shows of today and realize just how much $, time, and effort is going in to make the shows what they are today.
I can't imagine what they'll be like in 10 years!
