I watched this in the cinema last night (the small cinema where they get more independent films you wouldn't see in the big cinema).

I watched Shane Meadows' previous film, Dead Man's Shoes, and that movie was great. This Is England is equally as good. Shane Meadows is making British films that will one day be recognised as classics along the line of Kes. It's too bad Shane Meadows isn't being more widely recognised. But I guess thats the way it is. If it hasn't got A list stars or a widely accessable plot, its not gonna get recognised.

This Is England is set in 1983 and follows a young boy who falls in with a group of skinheads. As I expected, the movie deals with racism. But I didn't expect the film to be so funny. Dead Man's Shoes had no humor at all, This Is England is bursting with humor. Which is weird, considering how dark the film gets. I don't want to give away too much of the plot, except to say its not what you'd expect of it, watching the trailer. Yeah, the film deals with racism and yobs, but its MOSTLY the tale of a young boy just growing up.

Shane Meadows sure can pick his music. Theres a cool scene of the boy cycling about his town, with this great music playing. It really adds to the sometimes touching nature of the film, the humble nature of the film.

Like I said, I don't wanna give too much away. If other people here have watched it, I'd love to talk more about it in detail.

Here's a trailer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=flYdowesHgU

I'd forgotten about this movie, but I'd seen the trailer a while ago and thought it might be worth a viewing.

However, I just checked my local cinema and they're not showing it. Bastards.

/\ I know

I have been waiting to watch this movie for months! i love Shanes films and i think they are amazing when it comes to it coming out they dont show it at any of the cinemas in my city! Nearest ones like 40 miles away, unless i wait untill June 22 where its playing at a tiny cinema! Lame as hell, how are we ment to support British films when they dont release the dam thing nation wide! Hopefully if it does well at the ones it is playing at they will put in more.

Either that or i wait for the Dvd :(

Well my cinema finally saw the light and decided to show it! Wooo!

Just got back from seeing it and it was amazing, it was a great story, acting and Direction, cant really fault the film.
The lead actor Tomo is absolutely wonderful. It's the most natural performance by a kid since Kes. Steve Graham is awesome, and the supporting cast are excellent. There are too many to single out. It's nice to see a Shane movie and not be involved as you can just sit back and enjoy it without pressures.
I wouldn't be suprised if this wasn't Shane's most successful movie. I obviously don't want to reveal too much, but there are so many deft touches and details in this movie. Shane just seems to be getting stronger and stronger as a film-maker.

8/10
