This movies screenplay, by Shane Black (Lethal Weapon), was the first to be sold for a million bucks! Was it worth it? Perhaps. It was the 21st highest grossing movie of 1991. And, it was entertaining! HOWEVER, the problem I have with this movie is the same I have with most of Shane Black's non-Lethal Weapon movies. They follow the same damn formula! Its always have a white and black guy (or a white female). One of them is crazy and the other is normal. The bad guy always kidnaps a relative (usually the daughter). And, well, you get the point.

But, anyway, any thoughts on this movie?

Very fun to watch.

i enjoyed it as a kid. nowadays, not so much. i realize, that wayans disappeared for a reason. and yea its called a 'buddy comedy' have you ever heard of it?

and a little gem called Celtic Pride. look into it. disappeared for a reason.

Yea, its a fun movie but is it any different than Lethal Weapon? Shane Black got a million bucks to re-write Lethal Weapon!

Can't Knock The Hustle (c)Shawn Carter

The studio obviously made it's money back...

It's not like hollywood is known for being into original ideas.

And the stories always take place around Christmas!!! But I love the man, regardless. I still enjoy The Last Boyscout, and I always found THe Long Kiss Goodnight grossly underrated. Not to mention Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

Its a dated 90's action movie but none the less its an action movie, the only thing its suppose to do is entertain with explosions and one liners. Its not suppose to be lord of the rings. Dont see why everyone is being so hard on Damon Wayans, like it was stated before he did have a popular TV series that ran on ABC for four seasons

I'm not sure if I ever saw the full movie, I just remmeber the opening scene with a football player running the ball downfield then pulling a gun and shooting the defenders. Always thought that was hilarious.

Not to mention a little show called In Living Color...

long kiss goodnight and last boy scout are both amazing films...

I really like this movie, I remember I mentioned it in a thread about best action movies from the 90s or something like that... Willis character has a McClane-ish thing. It's great fun.

I LOVE this movie! It's always a great view. In junior high my friends & I would watch this movie over and over and over. Sure it follows the old action formula of the 80s/90s, but at least it follows it well!

Great action. Great comedy. Great movie. It's a great "no brainer" movie, and a tip-of-the-hat to quality 90s action.

  • Shane Black became the first writer to sell a script for $1 million.
  • The movie that Joe’s daughter Darian is watching on TV is Lethal Weapon, which was also written by Shane Black.
  • In the original script, the entire third act was set on water. Hallenbeck’s grudge with senator Baynard was completely different from the movie. Hallenbeck was working security for the Baynard family when Louis Baynard, President Baynard’s son, kills a mother and her child in a drunken car accident. When Hallenbeck refuses to cover for the president’s son, they plant half a kilo of crack cocaine in his house. Louis Baynard was also a villain in the script, and in the end both he and his father dies.
  • Quentin Tarantino has declared himself a fan of The Last Boy Scout.
  • Bill Medley sings “Friday Night Is a Great Night for Football” on the opening and closing credits.
  • This was Eddie Griffin’s first ever appearance in a film
  • Billy Cole, the football player who commits suicide in the film's opening game, is played by Tae-Bo guru Billy Blanks.
  • Composer Michael Kamen hated the film when he first saw it. He only scored the film out of his personal friendships to Bruce Willis and Joel Silver.
  • The movie's title character, "The Last Boy Scout", is revealed to be Joe Hallenbeck (Bruce Willis) when Jimmy Dix (Damon Wayans) signs Hallenbeck's daughter's football card, "To the Daughter of The Last Boy Scout"
  • The cat-puppet that Darian speaks through (and ultimately saves Hallenbeck's life) is named "Furry Tom."

Touch me again and I'll killya. Head or Gut? He was ******* my wife. Tragic loss to the art world. Blood eveywhere and Halle Berry stripping. What's not to like?

I just meant that his character was a lot like John McClane, especially in DH with a Vengeance, beaten up and alway sick of everything...

I'm saying...it's Bruce Willis. Of course he is like McClane. Willis plays basically the same character in every movie.

Maybe you need to watch Hudson Hawk :p

or Death Becomes Her...

  • The movie's FULL of great one-liners!

Although I recently caught the first hour on Cinemax. I was disappointed that the cinematography doesn't hold up as well as I remembered. :( It's all close ups with no room to breathe:down

That seemed to be the style, I just recently watched tango and cash, I loved that back in the early 90s but watching it again, there were a lot of close ups. It was just popular back then I suppose

Widescreen was still carrying the negative stigma of "Letterbox" :down

That's why the in-your-face was so embraced! It was all about filling the entire screen with action.
