Walk up business is a huge factor in a movie's box office, that's why I don't really care for pre sale stats.

Pre-sales are usually always on point tho. Especially when it comes to CBMs. There will be outliers like Deadpool but that's one miss among a sea of hits.

Marvel films typically sell more walk-up tickets than other cbms. That will likely be the case with Ragnarok as it was for the previous 16 films.

Can we just take a minute to appreciate that Marvel is seventeen films in and still finding ways to keep things fresh and exciting?

And it won't stop anytime soon!

Too bad they're so formulaic and there's too much comedy.*

*That's sarcasm. :)

Do you think the general public will be over superhero movies after Infinity War 2? Where can they go from there?

‘Thor: Ragnarok’ To Hulk Smash Its Way To $400M Worldwide By Sunday – Preview

After launching to $109M in 36 markets last weekend, Disney/Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok will dominate additional destinations around the world such as the U.S./Canada, China, Japan, Germany, Russia and Mexico moving its global cume to a projected $400M-plus by Sunday. That’s jawdropping considering the first Thor‘s lifetime worldwide total six years ago finaled at $449M.

Thor: Ragnarok got an early start in Germany today and sources tell us that its overseas cume will stand at $150M by tomorrow. China alone this weekend is projected to make $50M and U.S./Canada is poised to make $100M-$120M per industry estimates at 4,080 venues over three days. Per one rival distribution chief, “Thor: Ragnarok will take up every single breath of the box office this weekend.” Disney insiders are betting that Thor: Ragnarok safely comes in at $100M-plus. Anything over that is gravy. Tracking shows that Thor: Ragnarok is playing strongly to all demos. The threequel is directed by New Zealand director Taika Waititi whose 2005 live action short Two Cars, One Night was nominated for an Oscar.

Nah they're just kiddy, formulaic and comedic movies. Are you really that excited for Iron Man 17? :o

LOL! They are not deep enough.:cwink:
What else? They only get good/great reviews because Disney/Marvel pays the critics. Also, rotten tomatoes scores don't mean anything (unless the movie I like gets a certified fresh).:woot:

It's definitely getting to $800 million WW then!

Big win for Marvel and Chris then. Awesome how each sequel just gets bigger and bigger. Have they ever released a sequel that earned less?

Age of Ultron. But it was coming after a movie earning 1.5 bil and it ended up at 1.4 so that's a bit different.

I was hoping OW estimates would start ramping up nearer the release date.

Let's go ladies and gents! The time has arrived to get your tickets and have a great fun time at the theatre with your, friends, family... Hope you're all ready for this awesome ride that is TR.

Totally forgot about AoU. I guess it's different with "solo" films. But is amazing people keep talking about superhero fatigue and the bubble bursting but these movies make bank even if they're bad.

Can't wait for Friday.

I think they'll have more avenues to explore. If Infinity War lives up to the hype people will always want to see what comes next in the aftermath of such an event.

‘Thor: Ragnarok’ Outpacing ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Pre-Ticket Sales (EXCLUSIVE)

Marvel’s “Thor: Ragnarok” is looking to turbocharge a sleepy box office when it debuts in North America this weekend.

Anticipation is high for the Marvel superhero sequel, with Fandango reporting that the film is currently out-selling “Spider-Man: Homecoming” at a similar point in its sales cycle. The online ticketing giant says that the latest Thor film, the third in the Norse god franchise, is also far ahead of the previous two movies in the series.

“Spider-Man: Homecoming” debuted to $117 million when it opened last July. “Thor: Ragnarok” is on track to open in the $100 million to $118 million range. The pic has already launched in certain foreign markets, and made $109 million in its international debut last week.

The film brings back Chris Hemsworth as the hammer-wielding Avenger and partners him with Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk. Cate Blanchett plays the primary antagonist Hela, the goddess of death. Taika Waititi, an indie director best known for “Hunt for the Wilderpeople,” slid behind the camera for this installment, and has been credited by critics with injecting a more light-hearted tone into the series.

Fandango surveyed more than 1,000 moviegoers and found that 97% of those polled were excited to see the interactions between Thor and the Hulk, 89% were looking forward to the funnier storyline, and 88% were primed to see Blanchett.

If “Thor: Ragnarok” delivers, it’s good news for the box office. Ticket sales are down 5% year-to-date and this October was the worst since 2007 in terms of revenues.

I think that there is some kind of fatigue out there, but the studios, especially Marvel, have very successfully compensated for it.

iEquinox and Blitzkrieg, you guys seem to be quite knowledgable when it comes to box office stuff (I'm not, I have no clue), do you think Ragnarok could feasibly get to $900 mil?
It's still early, and domestic and remaining OS openings are some extremely important pieces to the puzzle that we're still missing, but it feels like $800M is the target atm(~300M DOM + ~500M OS. Reaching either would be a big win), and $900M still feels like a stretch. This weekend will tell us a lot more about it's chances of reaching either of those milestones.

A domestic opening close to $120M would give it a good shot at $300M domestic. For OS numbers I'm looking at GotG2(their first OS weekends were similar, with $109M for Ragnarok and $106M for GotG2). GotG2 was at $285M after the 2nd OS weekend(and it hadn't opened in Japan yet) and it ended up with $474M OS. If Ragnarok is targeting $500M OS, its goal is to beat that $285M OS number this weekend.
