Thor Ragnarok had just get the no.1 opening weekend in Japan on period 4th November until 5 November.

I believe it is the first time the American Superhero Movie (particularly MCU) has been able to get the no.1 number in Japan. The 2 MCU films top box office in Japan, The Avengers has been beaten by Rurouni Kenshin in 2012 and Civil War has been beaten by Meitantei Conan in 2016) but this year, with the competition with IT and Last Recipe on the same day premiere, Thor Ragnarok is No.1!! This is makes me very happy!

It's the 5th MCU movie to take the number one spot on opening weekend in Japan. Others that did it: The Avengers(Rurouni Kenshin was actually released on The Avengers' 2nd weeekend), Age of Ultron, Doctor Strange and Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Oh, I was not aware of that, thanks for clarified it.

Someone posted that site on the picture above on my timeline in twitter and talked that MCU movie finally has no.1 opening, but I did not aware that before Ragnarok there are already movies who claim that spot.

Ah yes, I only remember the news that RuroKen has beat The Avengers back in 2012 but did not know that it was Avengers second week that RuroKen has claimed the no.1 spot. haha

According to Marvel their plan is to be 'relatively' low cost for the first two movies and then go all out for the third movie. In the case of IM and Cap this approach has yielded 2 billion dollar third movies. Will be interesting to see if Thor can be the third.

With regards to Thor making more than Spider-Man, SMH did 880m with it's 6th movie and second reboot. Not many movies get a sixth outing let alone make that kind of money.

I don't think Ragnarok will make a billion.

IM3 came straight off the back of the Avengers. And RDJ has always been THE guy. Civil War was basically an Avengers movie, again including Iron Man. Plus the first appearance of MCU Spidey.

Ragnarok is still just a Thor film. Yea it has Hulk, but it's not like a big team up event movie. It's more comparable to The Winter Soldier I'd say.

Great numbers at 121M OW! This thing is definitely getting past 800M.

A 2.5 multiplier would mean over the $300m domestic barrier!

‘Thor: Ragnarok’s Strong Sunday Bulks Marvel Pic To $122M+ Opening – Monday AM Update

Monday 7:45 AM Update: This morning Disney/Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok is beating its Sunday $121M estimate with $122.7M per rivals’ numbers which makes it the sixth best opening of November. The Taika Waititi-directed threequel drew $32.1M yesterday, -28% from Saturday’s $44.4M. That haul ranks as the second best Sunday in November after The Hunger Games: Catching Fire ($34.5M). While Tuesday is bound to be the bigger midday for Ragnarok, Doctor Strange declined 71% from Sunday to Monday at this time last year for $6.2M. Given Ragnarok‘s momentum, it only makes sense that the pic stands to make more, potentially $9M to $10M+.

122.7M! Sweet!

It's not how you start it's how you finish. ;)

Not that I care who wins (as long as the films make enough money to make sequels I don't care about BO, as I'm not getting any of that money), but Ragnarok has more direct competition as JL is in the exact same genre (I don't see that one flopping like Apes 3 did), and it's in a less active BO time of year. The OW BO might be the comparison less tainted by their respective surroundings.

I figured the actuals would come in higher. Considering the rate of the overseas take, we might get a CBM this year with a legit chance at 900M.

The overseas numbers are going to finish up big I think with all these potential repeat views.

Thor is strong overseas and a very good, critically well received movie with strong word of mouth, with this style and impact will show how big the character/movie is in foreign markets. I think it will pass the 500M mark and then we shall see what happens after that.

Given the speed to $300m, $500m looks guaranteed.

It went up a bit with actuals, both domestically and OS.

Actuals:
$122,744,989 Domestic
$308,384,671 Foreign

$431,129,660 Worldwide

Nice. That's amazing. 431M! :drl:

Gitesh with the day by day breakdown. Fantastic holds.

FINAL: #ThorRagnarok* opens to $122,744,989 wknd w/ $30k avg. Daily breakdown: $46.5M THU night/FRI, $44.2M SAT (-5%), $32.1M SUN (-27%).

Daily numbers:
Friday: $46,470,936, including $14.5M from Thursday Previews
Saturday: $44,203,752
Sunday: $32,070,301

So the internal multiplier was (122,744,989/46,470,936=) 2.641x. That's the second highest internal multiplier in the MCU, just a little bit higher than Iron Man(#3 with 2.636x) and Doctor Strange(#4 with 2.610x).

The only one with a higher internal multiplier was Thor: The Dark World(2.687x), but that's not a fair comparison because it was helped by a federal holiday(Veteran's Day) on its first Monday.

The internal multiplier from true Friday(Friday without previews) was 3.386x, which is the highest in the MCU, beating the previous record, which was GotG2 with 3.314x.

So it's showing some early signs for good legs going forward.

Wondering by November 16, if Thor could be up to $650M prior to JL's release.
