Thoughts on smart watch?

So, I wanted to buy a new watch recently, and inevitably the smart watch option came up in conversation. I sort of skipped the Apple watch hype, because it seemed like a horribly frivolous luxury item. Also the horrible battery life, and the fact that it was ugly (my personal opinion, granted) didn't exactly make it tantalizing.

But now, I see the market has far more options, including some that actually look appealing, and are considerably more affordable. So, I am considering it.

I was wondering if anyone here had an opinion on them, or experience with them.

Only had a little experience myself. Thing I took away was that it kinda seemed like unnecessary garnishing. My phone does everything better and quicker and is just as easy to access. It's very much a first gen product though, things may change in a couple years time.

I'd wait on one. The technology is not there yet to be anything to go gaga for.

I'd like one but I'm not the most dainty female. Something so pricy and frail is not meant for the like of me.

A fitness watch/bracelet is the way I'm going. DC has a line, I'm holding out for Marvel.

If these watches ever out power and outperform and replace phones then I'll probably be onboard but as they stand now they are just an underpowered device that requires a phone. If I'm going to have to carry my phone for the watch to work I might as well just use my phone.

Seems like a useless device to me. I don't wear a watch anyway.

I personally like the LG Urbane, Asus Zenwatch, and Motorola 360. The Samsung watches are nice but they are freaking huge, expensive, and have usability limitations.

As others have said, I think the smartwatch sector is still in the Wild West phase. Only early adopters are really getting into the hype of owning one.

I have one but I almost never use it because I don't really need it and a regular watch does the same job. The most I ever used it was over the summer when my kids were home and I could see their texts when I was at work.

my big concern is the battery life...

"hey man do you got the time? My smart watch died" :woot:

"sorry my smart watch died too..." :o

"oh.." :o

"yup.."
:o

Yes, that was a concern for me too. However, the newer watches seem to do a lot better, with some even being able to go two days. Wireless charging has also made them a lot more palatable. Who wears a watch when they got bed? Just put it on the cradle, and it charges up.

I own a Samsung Gear S & it works really well for me, no complains!!! Also, when batt is running low, I put it on the cradle for a recharge.

Sounds unnecessary.
I stopped wearing watches 17 years ago, feel no need to return to the habit now.

If one of the companies can find a way to use the heat of the human body as a way power the watch then that would be a game changer. As long as these devices have to be recharged they're never going to be as good as a phone or a conventional watch.

I want a glowing smart based globe that does stuff. Call it the orb. That would be so scifi...

I'm a HUGE Apple fan boy and even I don't see the point of the Apple Watch.

Plus first gen is never what you should invest in anyways...

For now I prefer my watches old school. As has been said the tech just isn't there yet. I buy a new phone every 2 years or less so now adding a new smartwatch with that every time and that's a deal breaker for me. Now if they could do holograms and other cool things maybe I'd bite but until then it just seems like a waste for me.

I used to wear a watch all the time then worked in a bakery for a few years where I couldn't. I never got back in the habit.

As for an apple watch it just seems to be useless when I have the same thing on my phone and paying a lot of money for a much smaller screen on a first gen thing is pretty pointless.
