This was listed on rottentomatoes as a good review.... it seems bad to me..

Director Tim Burton’s screen adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s 1979 Grand Guignol musical is at once mesmerizing and disappointing. Outstanding singing performances from its gifted ensemble cast contrast unfavorably with Burton’s trademark affinity for a drab monochromatic color scheme of white, blue, brown and gray. Gallons of orange/red blood pour out beneath thankfully abbreviated songs performed in all-too-predictable orchestrations meant to cater to Broadway audiences familiar with the original Sondheim production. For such an idyllic gothic setting, Burton misses his cue to update the songs with orchestration, reharmonization, tempo, and key changes that could have corrected the music’s tendency to slip into a drone of same-sounding pitches.

But the reviewer gave it a B, hence a positive review.

Meh. The critic is just nitpicking.

^ i didn't know it was a dreamworks movie also.

What I find interesting about SWEENEY TODD's opening credits is that it seems *very* self-referential. It's like Burton is purposefully recalling some of his previous films (namely, EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, BATMAN RETURNS, CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY) and is mixing it all up with blood.

It is on right now. It's good but I missed the first half. I'm sure they'll replay it, it's 30 minutes long btw which is pretty nice for a preview.

I'll be seeing the film Tuesday during a special screening.

i saw this film at a known preview up in Bircham... it was ok... it was a film

Helena Bonham Carter, Burton have second baby
1 hour, 4 minutes ago

British actress Helena Bonham Carter has given birth to a daughter, her second child with director Tim Burton, People magazine reported on Sunday.
The baby was born in London on Saturday, People said, quoting the actress' publicist. The couple already have a 4-year-old son, Billy.
Bonham Carter, 41, received a Golden Globe nomination last week for her role as a ghoulish baker in Burton's musical adaptation "Sweeney Todd," which opens in limited release on Friday. Burton, 49, was also nominated.
She revealed in the latest issue of Playboy that she became pregnant midway during the production, causing continuity problems since the film was not shot in sequence.
"I start off with huge breasts, and then I walk upstairs and suddenly I've got tangerines again," she said. "It's melons to tangerines."

I'm off to the special screening. I'll give you all the lowdown when I get back. :)

Well, I just got back from a special screening of the film, sponsored by a local radio station in Florida. It was a big theatre, full stadium seating, and it was a good 95% full. No trailers, so it was right to the good stuff.

Ironically, I had no real intention of seeing the film before I got the passes for tonight's screening. I dig Tim Burton and Depp, but I just wasn't quite hyped to see this film. So it must have been fate for me to have my butt in that seat tonight, because this movie was flat out amazing. Burton may have outdone himself with this one, combining his usual moody, gothic flair with another tremendous Depp performance for a wicked good time at the movies.

The cinematography, lighting, costume design. All top notch. And, of course, the blood. Oh yes, there are BUCKETS of it. And the [blackout]throat cutting[/blackout] never gets old. :D  Big kudos to Helena Bonham Carter who really makes this film. Definitely a Best Supporting Actress nod in her future, as her character is so oddly lovable and an excellent compliment to Depp.

And then there's the music. I didn't realize how much of a musical this film was going to be, so it took me a while to really get a feel for it. There's a lot of music, and yet you're intoxicated by it all. The score is outstanding, and all of the songs flow so well through the story, even to the point of connecting plot points and arcs all by themselves.

Simply put, Sweeney Todd is a macabre masterpiece. Brutal, touching, funny, and deliriously magical. One of the best films I've seen all year. Easily.

Grade: A
