A version of TimeSplitters Rewind, the community-led multiplayer compilation of the first three TimeSplitters games, is being worked on for PlayStation 4.

In an interview with Cinema Blend, project lead Michael Hubicka explained that the team was prepared to start work on a PS4 version though they hadn't been given the go ahead to actually release it.

"We're actually going to go ahead and start development [of Timesplitters Rewind] on PlayStation 4," he explained. "Just because we're pretty confident Crytek's going to say go ahead and do it. But we don't want them saying go ahead and do it when we're caught with our pants down and we're like halfway through development and [then] start something for the PlayStation 4.

"So we decided that since they released the SDK to allow us to do this, we're going to go ahead and do it ourselves, and when they say 'yes' or 'no' we can decide what to do with that. For now we're just going to go ahead and do it. So at least we're prepared."

Originally announced back in March for PC, TimeSplitters Rewind is a community project being made by some of the series' original devs along with fans, all blessed by Crytek. Using the CryEngine 3, the aim is to create a multiplayer compilation of maps, weapons and characters from the first three games.

As for whether the game will make its way to Xbox One, Hubicka explained Microsoft's track record with the Xbox 360 made the team wary but they aren't ruling anything out.

"In terms of the Xbox One, we haven't really looked into the development behind it, because there's still a lot of details we need to look into," he said. "There was a weird process for the Xbox 360 and it was a huge turnoff for me, and they still haven't really said anything appealing to me that would definitely make me think 'Okay, let's do this for the Xbox One'. It doesn't mean that I don't want to, because the more the merrier."
What do you reckon, would you like to see the TimeSplitters madness return to consoles once more? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Microsoft need to get it together with this stuff. Right now they're bleeding 'exclusives' to Sony on this.

Oh yes. I love Timesplitters, one of the best MP console games out there.

Timesplitters is brilliant. I wish someone would make a proper sequel.

You don't see enough humour in shoot em ups anymore

That sound? That sound you just heard? Was my heart exploding from excitement, I would buy a PS4 solely for a next-gen TimeSplitters...

Hopefully if this project is successfully, it will lead to Crytek doing just that. Between the likes of COD, Battlefield, Killzone and Medal of Honor, we have enough of this serious militaristic and/or realistic shooters. There is a void needed for one with a bit more personality and humor which was what Timesplitters provided

I wonder whats going on with my quote notifications lately? I havent gotten any of them.

Anyway yeah havok, I couldnt agree more

Yaaaaas I loved this series! One of my favourite shoot em ups and I love those when they're done right! I can't wait to see the inventive characters and zany level design

THQ Nordic adds another two properties to its collection.

THQ Nordic has acquired the TimeSplitters and Second Sight IPs, the company announced. The acquisitions were made through Koch Media, a fully owned subsidiary of THQ Nordic.

Here is an overview of the TimeSplitters IP, via THQ Nordic:

TimeSplitters was largely considered as one of the most influential console games of the early 2000’s. The three game series earned a large and passionate fan base thanks to its unique humor, art style and pop culture references while encouraging customization and modification to give each person their own individual experience. TimeSplitters was originally created by the development studio Free Radical Design that later become Deep Silver Dambuster, part of the THQ Nordic group.
Second Sight was a science fiction action adventure game also developed by Free Radical Design and released for PlayStation 2, Xbox, and GameCube in September 2004, followed by PC in February 2005.

Here is an overview of the game, via PlayStation.com:

Join John Vattic, a man endowed with psychic abilities, as he attempts to escape a US medical facility. As you discover more and more of John’s psychic powers, you’ll slowly uncover the events that landed him in the hands of the researchers. You’ll gain access to a variety of psionic abilities (such as Psi-Blast, Telekinesis, Projection, and Charm) and powerful weapons (including handguns, tranquilizers, and machine guns). Complete your objectives using a combination of shooting action and stealth tactics.
While THQ Nordic did not share further information, it teased that “full details of future TimeSplitters and Second Sight products will be revealed in due course.”

If we get a PS4 Timespliters, I'll be so hyped. I've been eager for a new TS game ever since Future Perfect, but the market has been taken over (seemingly) by Battlefield and Call of Duty.

Oh my gosh yes! Yay to a zany shooter. If people thought the characters in Overwatch were out there wait til they get a load of this!

This news has really made my week

Don't get too excited. They've purchased other title rights that they've done nothing with (apparently). I am however both hopeful and optimistic about this, though I do wonder whether such a release would be for PS5 given the time it'll take to design, develop and produce the title.

Too late, I’m too excited now.

And surely they’ll do something with them after coughing up that money. Plus there’s been a lot of good buzz. I’ll cross my fingers

I created this thread 5 years ago and still no game

Even if they just remastered the original trilogy like they’re doing with Spyro, I would totally be all over that

They'd need to do a merge (of sorts). Timesplitters, unlike Crash & Spyro is a well known multiplayer game; it's doubtful they'd release three games, cause they'd need three servers to run the MP function.

If anything comes of this, it'll either be a new (4th) game, or they'll take the best elements of the three and release something of a prequel mix (which could count as a new game anyway).

In any case, I suspect we're looking at 9-12 months before we hear anything.

I could imagine the bubble head situation with a game like this would be insane! Everyone will want a calamari or handyman bobble head

THQ Nordic hires TimeSplitters co-creator to work on franchise return

Former Rare and Free Radical Design veteran Steve Ellis has joined THQ Nordic to work on whatever's next for TimeSplitters.

Ellis is described by THQ Nordic as co-creator of the much-loved, much-missed British shooter franchise - which the publisher snapped up from former owner Crytek this time last year.

In a press release today, THQ Nordic said Ellis had "joined us to help plot the future course for this franchise". It's unknown what a new TimeSplitters game might look like now - a sequel? a remake? - or who else from that original team nearly two decades ago may return.

Crytek held the TimeSplitters rights for years after rescuing developer Free Radical Design from bankruptcy, but never found time to do anything with them. Here's hoping something moves forward now

Oh well, nothings real til it’s real.

I would love more timesplitters though. Hopefully it’s not full of pricey dlc though

At least they can't post on 8chan anymore...
