TMOS Review & Speculation Thread

I already know it's going to be great. I said in the box office thread that this thing was gonna do better than expected but what I'm more confident about than anything is that the sequel is going to outgross any other movie in the history of the genre.

Any other movie in the history of the genre?... You mean superhero movies?... Then I'll strongly have to disagree and I can give you 1.5 billion reasons why.

100% based on 300 reviews. Average rating: 10/10. Consensus: Best film of all time.

Unless....it turns out that Zod is a drunken decoy and Perry White is behind everything.

I heard that in a spoiler review!^

My thoughts exactly. I will say this, when BB came along, I don't think there were any origin stories as personal and thorough as BB. So critics had nothing to compare it with, really. That being said, if it's underrated, it's only underrated slightly. I feel like Dawes and the less-than-stellar camerawork in the action scenes hampered the film, and the concept shifted from a crime drama atmosphere to a more "superheroic one" which kind of defeats the "real world" point. :oldrazz:

TDK had the Ledger hype surrounding it, but also was an incredible movie in and of itself. TDKR had hype leftover from TDK, but critics also seemed like they valued it more based on a newfound nostalgia, if that makes any sense.

MOS could be a masterwork of cinema, but it's doomed to be underrated by critics who view it as a threat to "their" classic. Combine that with someone who will search every canonical event that parallels the classic and pan it as a "rip off" and you have over ten percent of critics hating it for no good reason at all. So yes, if MOS gets over 83, I'll be happy. If it gets over 86, I'll be thrilled. Anything MORE would make me want to camp outside the theater, rain or shine, for a chance to see it :)

Usually when a cbm's get's over 90, it's probably due to some transcendent element that goes beyond it's comic book genre and pleases non-comic book fans and casuals. For Dark Knight it was Ledger's performance, For the Avengers it was likely that ending battle scene. They aren't really indicative of them being better films than those that score in the 80's they are just indicators of their wider appeal.

That being said, this being a non-sequel and in context of a sequel heavy summer...the freshness and more optimistic nature of MoS could be a positive in regards to it's critical reaction.

This movie is going to fall in 1 of 3 places for me. Each one would have it's own range of rating.

70%-78% The movie will be good. The action will be decent. Solid movie all around. Gives the audience what they want, cool scenes, good story and a worthy Superman.

78%-86% The movie will be amazing. Action sequences will be phenomenal. The story will really hit home with a lot of people. The Superman we've all been waiting for. Zod and Supes battle scenes will be incredible. A solid foundation to the beginning of a big franchise and a good foot in the door for JL.

86%-94% The true Superman we've all been waiting for. Bone chilling action that will almost bring a tear to the average fanboy's eye. Justice to Krypton and Supe's true origins. An amazing father son connection with Jor-El and Jonathan Kent. Zod giving Supes a beat down in IMAX 3D action. A story so inspiring that everyone leaves the theatres with goosebumps and immediately tweets about how good #MOS was. Lastly, setting a solid foundation for the future of MOS movies, and leaving an easter egg or two for a potential JL movie.

Those are the different scenarios I see happening with MOS and the requirements they'd need for the different benchmarks of RT percentages.

There won't be a 95%-100%. There are too many wild card reviewers out there that will give a movie a rotten review just to stand out and draw attention for not being mainstream and giving the movie the rating it deserves.

I mainly see Pixar films with that rating so now I'm concerned about MU.

89%. And we will be checking it every day praying for it to get up to that elusive 90% lol.

Agreed, unless it's a low budget, Indie movie, nothing reaches 95%...

I think reviewers go in with 'higher expectations' when it comes to big budget movies and it's like a rule that you can't give those movies high scores...

The Prestige!...I love that film! As much as I like Nolan's foray into superhero territory, his original stuff is always better (Prestige was largely changed from the novel, and noted by the author himself as an improvement)

The Prestige is a remarkable film.

Haha, I'm with you on that! Nobody seems to take me seriously when I tell them MU will cause MOS to take a hit.

A friend's reaction to a certain movie coming out in a couple of weeks: "I was expecting a 9, but it was seriously a 10."

I want this movie to do well for 2 people. For Henry, the guy is a class act. Deserves this huge role and it'll do loads for his career moving forward. Genuinely good guy, perfect for the Superman role and he wears the suit well. Second person being Snyder. He's a brilliant director that doesn't deserve half the criticism he gets. He needs this as a, "He can make a great movie with not only action."

^ I agree. But first and foremost I want this movie to do well for the fans. It was made for them.

With modern CGI there's no reason they can't make Supes a total powerhouse just throwing trains and buildings.

Josh Dickey ‏@NotoriousJLD 8m Dozens of you saw #ManOfSteel last night and not so much as a HINT on here? C'mon guys, you know "embargo" is a fluid term.

Mike Sampson ‏@mjsamps 6m @NotoriousJLD Feedback I've heard from numerous people is "very good but not great."
