Hi guys... this is my first post on the Hellboy boards. I tend to stay away from discussion on films I'm confident about because there's nothing to worry about. I'm not scared they'll get it wrong. I tend to hang out on the boards for characters I have a great fondness for but am worried they'll **** it up (Batman, Superman).
But Hellboy is one of the former types (along with say, 300, which looks to be shaping up fine). I really enjoyed the first movie and am looking forward to number 2.
However, I'm wondering if anyone else would like to see a tonal change... even a slight change in genre, in the sequel. Hellboy 1 was an action adventure, pulpy superhero movie with Horror trappings. It was great for what it was and I loved it, but it didn't *quite* feel like the comics to me. It felt like that world, and the characters felt like those characters, but the story and its tone and atmosphere were a bit to slick and "Hollywood" and conventional. Very fun and loving towards the source material but not quite right.
Being set mostly in a city, for one thing, made it feel more like a traditional Superhero movie... the last bit in Russia felt the most like the books.
But more than that, the comics always have this slightly creepy, surreal Gothic feeling that the movie lacked. They're often quieter and more personal.
What I really want is for the Hellboy movies to be more like Guillermo's Spanish Language Horror films (not yet seen Pan but I'm really looking forward to it)... and not so much like Blade 2, you know what I mean? Something a bit more serious and a bit darker and spookier and weirder and less mainstream. Still mainstream enough of course, and I still want to see huge punch-ups with Monsters and pulp craziness and so forth... but balanced with creepy, atmospheric horror.
And when I say "horror", I realize the films have to be PG 13, but I still think you can get away with a lot if you're creative.
Anyone with me here?
