what would you pick? what games do you think were the most influential? opening up a new genre, etc..

1) Pong (game that birthed the gaming industry)
2) Super Mario Bros (birthed/defined the adventure games)
3) Street Fighter (defined vs fighters)
4) Final Fantasy (defined rpgs)
5) Goldeneye (broke the mold/with multiplayer first person shooter)

(honorable mentions, Doom (defined the fps), donkey kong, pac-man)

what about HL2?? Sorry I'm just a huge fan from that series. LOL

Metal Gear Solid.

Its made games and cinema come closer thus creating everything you love about a great movie and a great game.

Ahem, my opinion would be different

1) Super Mario Bros (saved the whole industry, may I add.)
2) Metal Gear/GTA3 tie (revolutionized the industry in ways we that are still in effect)
3) Street Fighter (defined vs fighters)
4)Wiiplay(It's not a change I like, but still...)
5) Mortal Kombat(Every game that has a E, M or AO in it's lower corner owes it to MOrtal Kombat)

IMO, thats a change thats extremely dangerous for the hardcore crowd and for the rest of the industry

1. Super Mario Bros (First big gaming franchise)
2. Pac-Man (First huge game)
3. Halo/Halo 2 (Re-defined the FPS & made online gaming huge)
4. Grand Theft Auto (I don't like the series but it did basically introduce huge free-roam sandboxes)
5. Tie- Between Mortal Kombat & Street Fighter (Were the reasons for the rating system)

question....

how is super smash bros the first big gaming franchise? im assuming you mean like a game that includes franchised properties all in one, but it sounds like you mean biggest franchise for a game... and thats def not accurate.

and if im not mistaken, pong is still considered the first "huge" game..

the rest are somewhat agreeable.

I won't say Pong because it didn't change anything, it started it.

Mortal Kombat - Gave no limit to Vs. games
Mario - Started Adventure Games
Prince of Persia: Sands of Time - Reinvented the action/adventure genres with a new engine
Halo - Bursted the popularity of FPS
Tetris - Created games where you need much thinking and strategy (this would eventually lead to strategy games and games where you control the outcome (rpgs))

I'm going to be honest, I don't really have anything constructive to throw in here, but I just want to say that Super Mario Bros. is in no way, shape, or form an adventure game.

I just felt that needed clearing up.

Street Fighter - Helped start the fighting game genre
Resident Evil - The game that started the survival horror genre
Metal Gear Solid - Provided great storytelling never seen before in a game along with stealth action gameplay.
Super Mario Bros - The first true side scrolling platforming game.
Tetris - New gameplay that provided using just different shapes could be addictive and fun to play.

Wait, I meant Super Mario Bros. Sorry.

Not really, Resident Evil was the first game to call itself survival horror but alone in the dark was the first one in spirit.

In my opinion...

  1. Pong
  2. Doom
  3. Super Mario Bros.
  4. Mortal Kombat
  5. Grand Theft Auto III

IMO, without RE, i dont think the surrvival horror genre would be what it is today.

Actually it wasn't pong. I just read about this actually. It was a game called Tennis for Two. It was created in the late 50s while Pong came out almost 20years later. But Pong is the game that kick started the industry.

Oh. Beat me to it...:o

Mine would be:

Doom- It brought games to the popularity they are now. Why? Because it was free, and awesome. It also made online gaming popular. And IMO the most important game of them all.

Super Mario- For obvious reasons.

Halo/Halo 2-Halo, it was the game to beat. Every other game that came out was the next possible "Halo Killer!" It raised the bar not only for FPS, but for all games. And Halo 2, even though I didn't like it, did explode the online gaming scene for consoles.

Mario 64- Brought us the current 3D games we have now. We'd seen the "3D" sprits. But this was the first real, full, 3D game.

Terminator 3 The Redemption- It was the first Terminator game to actually rock and was also the first to feature the likeness of Arnold. Nuff said. ( So I couldn't think of a 5th...what are you gonna do?)

1. Super Mario Bros. (for obvious reasons)
2. Metal Gear Solid (Showed that games could rival movies in story driven plots)
3. Tetris (Brought puzzle gaming to the fore, and truly started casual gaming)
4. Final Fantasy VII (I personally think the game is overrated, but it did make RPGs mainstream.)
5. The Legend of Zelda (showed that a console could be home to epic adventures and also was the first to allow saving within the game using a battery backup in the cart.)

Honerable mentions that had almost equel impact: Super Mario 64, Goldeneye, Resident Evil, Grand Theft Auto.

mario bros 3
Doom
Street Fighter 2 (in actual fact, super street fighter 2 turbo)
pacman (i would say this was more of a skill game then tetris)
zelda

honourary mention to rad racer which showed the first using of the power glove, it's so cool.actually it should be outrun which helped define the racing game genre

The lack of halflife is distrubing.

Half-Life is a great game, but was never one that really shaped or changed the industry.

Looking at first person shooters, the ones that helped shape the modern FPS genre and brought it full bore where it is now, and yes, even influenced the HL series were: Doom, Wolfenstein, and Goldeneye (In relation to FPS on consoles).

These were the FPS pioneers...there would be no Half-Life without the first two.

Doom (1993)
Civilization (1991)

World Of warcraft (2004)

Made MMO's accessible, slicker and more mainstream. Cashcow people try to emulate rather than innovate.

Halflife 1/2 (1998-2008)

Raised the bar on first person shooters. Real time scripted set pieces were used as story-telling as opossed to cut-scenes. Started a boom in modding and map making with tools freely allowed to be used wich subsequencely lead to countstrike, one of the most played online games in the world. Lead on to steam wich is the leading platform for digital distribution along with steam cloud wich will save keyconfigs, saved games with automatic driver updates built in online. Valve also support Indy game company's like Audiosurf peggle as well as snapping up smaller company's and mod makers who made Portal and Left4dead.

Halo

Started a boom in first person shooters on the console.

Actually Quake came out first and pioneered much of what you just talked about.
