Top 5 games that changed the gaming industry!

No it didn't, yes, it brought video games to the attention of the government (although it wasn't the only game, Night Trap was part of the initial argument too).

Mortal Kombat is just about the sole reason that theres the rating system now. That was a huge change for the industry. All the other games you guys are talking about are just natural evolutions of the industry, as games were never destined to stay ponglike for long. Are some of the things you guys listed pretty big changes? Sure, like creating new genres and what not, but I still say that MK was the biggest change for the industry. Not only did it bring in heavy violence and blood into video games, which was practically unheard of at the time, but it paved the way for the entire ESRB system.

How is adding blood NOT a natural evolution of a game? Besides, Doom and Wolfenstein had blood WAY before MK came around. And they had a rating too.

My point is you had to look it up. So once again, you proved my point.

edit: Oh, it seems you really meant "well done". My bad. I thought you were being sarcastic.:o

It seems obvious we are arguing about two different points, neither of them being disputable really. Wolfenstein/Doom did cause the boom and was infinantly more influential, however, it wasn't the first, first person shooter.

I didn't say that blood and violence didn't exist in games. I siad that it was practically unheard of, which it was. And while it may of been the natural evolution of gamining, the rating system wasn't. There were plenty of "mature" games before MK, just like there were plenty of kiddy games, middle ground games, and there were even a handful of adult only games. After MK and all it's crisises, the ESRB was put into effect. To say that this game isn't single handily one of the biggest changes in the industry is just downright ignorant and stupid.

1.Metal Gear Solid

2.Final Fantasy

3.Final Fight(beat-em up/co-op)

4.Resident Evil(survivor horror)

5.Shenmue

4)Wiiplay(It's not a change I like, but still...)

At least put Wii Sports instead since it came out earlier and it doesn't lose your interest after 30 min.

Super Mario Bros.

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Grand Theft Auto III

Metal Gear Solid

Doom

I would agree with this. I would put Halo 2 as a close 5th since it exploded the popularity of online gaming. However, the franchise did nothing groundbreaking in the FPS genre. The only way it did was make developers think a FPS would be the quickest way to profit.

Sure. I can agree with that.

Congratulations! You are the winner for this years most ironic post award!

"Single-handedly" and "one of the biggest" together make it an oxymoron. Not to mention you have "handedly" spelled "handily." Nice.

If someone is ignorant about something it doesn't make them stupid. Case in point...

Night Trap was just as big a reason for the ESRB, if not bigger, as it was actually pulled from shelves. Now you didn't mention this, nor did you spell single-handedly correctly, or recognize the fact you used an oxymoron to try and make your point.

Does all that make you stupid, or just ignorant? I'll let you decide.

The Industry?

Super Mario Brothers, created the NES era, the generation that NES, SNES and Genesis rode on.
Final Fantasy VII, imho changed the Playstation generation from casuals to dedicated gamers, and brought storytelling to the forefront... not because it was the best FF, but because of the time it came out.
Halo 2, more than anything else, solidified the FPSers into a cohesive culture that carries the instant gratification crowd even today.
World of Warcraft, is practically the entire MMO industry. They are the benchmark for what is possible for an MMO.
Wii Sports, is creating the next generation of gamers and will be responsible for keeping the industry alive, in my estimation.

Honourable mentions: Sonic the Hedgehog, SimCity, GTA, Metal Gear Solid (really interchangeable with FF7 on this list).

I don't think you could pick just 5. There are games that gave birth to genres (Platformers / Super Mario Bros.) and then games that gave birth to a new way of looking at that genre (3D Platformers / Super Mario 64).

You guys know that GTA wasn't the first 3D free roam game? Body Harvest was. Better than GTA too. It was actually made by a bunch of the same guys that later did GTA.

Oh and Jspider, I fricken love your avatars!

But when Body Harvest came out on the N64, gamers weren't all super-excited about it like they were with GTA3.
