To be fair regarding the "this war and these heroes will be forever remembered", that was a major theme in The Illiad.
Having recently watched the film again, i think it was better than its reputation made it seem, and after reading the myths and all that, i don't think the decision of not including the gods was that bad, some of their appearances in the story would feel a little clunky for a modern audience that is so used to questioning every little detail. Also, do we realy need to see the Gods assembling in order to explain why certain characters were killed or had certain fates?
Troy had many flaws, but it was far from a bad movie, i hope the upcoming Odyssey adaptation doesn't disappoint.
