Forgive me if there's already a thread like this.

I was reading the Worst Song Lyrics thread, and I was thinking about a Best Song Lyrics thread.

Which you think are stellar? Songs can tell amazing stories, or sometimes all it takes is a single lyric to hook you in. I'm just curious as to some of the lyrics/songs yall think are top notch and what some of your fave songs are.

It's corny, I know, but I'm on a big Phil Collins kick right now. "Invisible Touch" is my favorite

She has a built-in ability
to take everything she sees
And now it seems I'm falling,
falling for her.

She seems to have
an invisible touch, yeah
She reaches in
and grabs right hold of your heart.
She seems to have
an invisible touch, yeah
It takes control
and soon it tears you apart.

I've always loved Bob Marley's Redemption Song. I'm listening to it now.

Old pirates, yes, they rob I;
Sold I to the merchant ships,
Minutes after they took I
From the bottomless pit.
But my hand was made strong
By the 'and of the Almighty.
We forward in this generation
Triumphantly.
Won't you help to sing
These songs of freedom? -
'Cause all I ever have:
Redemption songs;
Redemption songs.

Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery;
None but ourselves can free our minds.
Have no fear for atomic energy,
'Cause none of them can stop the time.
How long shall they kill our prophets,
While we stand aside and look? Ooh!
Some say it's just a part of it:
We've got to fulfil de book.

Won't you help to sing
These songs of freedom? -
'Cause all I ever have:
Redemption songs;
Redemption songs;
Redemption songs.

Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery;
None but ourselves can free our mind.
Wo! Have no fear for atomic energy,
'Cause none of them-a can-a stop-a the time.
How long shall they kill our prophets,
While we stand aside and look?
Yes, some say it's just a part of it:
We've got to fulfil de book.
Won't you help to sing
Dese songs of freedom? -

Redemption songs:

Songs of freedom

the part in bold is my favorite part of the song, and right now it kinda reminds me of the discussion in another thread about the woman beheaded and no one doing anything about it.

either Swan Dive by Ani DiFranco or Lover You Should Have Come Over by Jeff Buckely

I know a lot of people here probably aren't into country, but this song is amazing, no matter what genre it is.

Whiskey Lullaby- Brad Paisley f/ Alison Krauss

She put him out like the burnin' end of a midnight cigarette
She broke his heart he spent his whole life tryin' to forget
We watched him drink his pain away a little at a time
But he never could get drunk enough to get her off his mind
Until the night

[1st Chorus]
He put that bottle to his head and pulled the trigger
And finally drank away her memory
Life is short but this time it was bigger
Than the strength he had to get up off his knees
We found him with his face down in the pillow
With a note that said I'll love her till I die
And when we buried him beneath the willow
The angels sang a whiskey lullaby

(Sing lullaby)

The rumors flew but nobody knew how much she blamed herself
For years and years she tried to hide the whiskey on her breath
She finally drank her pain away a little at a time
But she never could get drunk enough to get him off her mind
Until the night

[2nd Chorus]
She put that bottle to her head and pulled the trigger
And finally drank away his memory
Life is short but this time it was bigger
Than the strength she had to get up off her knees
We found her with her face down in the pillow
Clinging to his picture for dear life
We laid her next to him beneath the willow
While the angels sang a whiskey lullaby

(Sing lullaby)

i was gonna highlight my fave parts of it, but the song is so amazing, i couldve just highlighted the whole thing.

the first line is just so powerful, and it just keeps staying great. and when alison's voice comes in, it's haunting. i love this song.

i will gladly send the mp3 to anyone interested. i think its that great.

my favourite story-in-a-song is "Hurricane" by Bob Dylan. another great one is Elvis' "In the Ghetto".

As a crowd gathers round an angry young man
Face down on the street with a gun in his hand
In the ghetto.....

As her young man dies,
On a cold and gray chicago mornin,
Another little baby child is born in the Ghettoooooo...............

Dispatch - The General

There was a decorated general
with a heart of gold.
They likened him to all the stories he told
of past battles won and lost and
legends of old;
a seasoned veteran in his own time.

On the battlefield, he gained
respectful fame with many metals
of bravery and stripes to his name.
He grew a beard as soon as he could
to cover the scars on his face
and always urged his men on.

But on the eve of great battle
with the infantry in training
the old general tossed in his sleep
and wrestled with its meaning.
He awoke from the night
to tell what he had seen
and walked slowly out of his tent.

All the men held tall with their
chests in the air, with courage in
their blood and a fire in their stare.
It was a grey morning and they all
wondered how they would fare
till the old general told them to go home.

He said

[CHORUS]
I have seen the others
and I have discovered
that this fight is not worth fighting.
I have seen their mothers
and I will no other
to follow me where I'm going, so...
Take a shower, shine your shoes.
You got no time to lose,
you are young men you must be living.
Go now you are forgiven.

But the men stood fast with their
guns on their shoulders not knowing
what to do with their contradicting orders.
The general said he would do his own
duty but he would not extend it no further,
the men could go as they pleased.

Not a man moved, their eyes gazed
straight ahead till one by one they
stepped back and not a word was said
and the old general was left with his
own words echoing in his head.
He then prepared to fight.

[CHORUS]
I have seen the others
and I have discovered
that this fight is not worth fighting.
I have seen their mothers
and I will no other
to follow me where I'm going, so...
Take a shower, shine your shoes.
You got no time to lose,
you are young men you must be living.
Go now you are forgiven.

Go now you are forgiven,
Go now you are forgiven,
Go,
Go now, you gotta behave...

I like In the Ghetto too. have it on my ipod.

my aunt left my uncle for a guy in elvis' band. true story

i adore Butch Walker, and sadly I'm the only person I know of who likes his music, let alone knows who he is. He writes some great lyrics.

"Best Thing You Never Had"- Butch Walker

Hello how you doing?
What's it like to ruin all my self esteem
Let me blow off some steam
For 5 years I've waited,
So why am I jaded to get back at you
What makes it cool

When you act like nothing ever happened
I feel like I should feel bad
But I can't like someone who thought
They're the only one that mattered
I hope that you're flattered
Cause you broke this down
The best thing that you never had

And it seems like a loss somehow
My heart got lost on the way to my head
And my brain cells are dead
And the craziness shows
Now I start to go when the green turns to red
And I should be dead

When you act like nothing ever happened
I feel like I should feel bad
But I can't like someone who thought
They're the only one that mattered
While my heart got shattered like romantic roadkill
My heart is all splattered your ego got fatter
And I hope that you're flattered
Cause you broke this down
The best thing that you never had

Like the toilet seat never got lifted
And I pissed on your confidence
When you weren't around, how can that be?
Don't turn this around
You were the one
Who drove my ass right to the ground

When you act like nothing ever happened
I feel like I should feel bad, and I can't like

Someone who thought
They're the only one that mattered
While my heart got shattered like romantic roadkill
My heart is all splattered your ego got fatter
And I hope that you're flattered
Cause you broke this down
You broke this down
The best thing, the best thing,
The best thing that you never had

You never had...

"Help The Aged"

Help the aged,
one time they were just like you,
drinking, smoking cigs and sniffing glue. Help the aged,
don't just put them in a home,
can't have much fun in there all on their own.

Give a hand, if you can,
try and help them to unwind.
Give them hope & give them comfort 'cos they're running out of time.

*In the meantime we try.
Try to forget that nothing lasts forever. No big deal so give us all a feel.
Funny how it all falls away.
When did you first realise?
It's time you took an older lover baby. Teach you stuff
although he's looking rough.
Funny how it all falls away.

Help the aged
'cos one day you'll be older too
- you might need someone who can
pull you through
& if you look very hard
behind the lines upon their face you may see where you are headed
and it's such a lonely place.

[*Repeat]
You can dye your hair
but it's the one thing you can't change.
Can't run away from yourself, yourself...

[*Repeat]
Funny how it all falls away. [x3]
So help the aged.

D-I-V-O-R-C-E by Tammy Wynette

Our little boy is four years old and quite a little man
So we spell out the words we don't want him to understand
Like T-O-Y or maybe S-U-R-P-R-I-S-E
But the words we're hiding from him now
Tear the heart right out of me.

Our D-I-V-O-R-C-E becomes final today
Me and little J-O-E will be goin' away
I love you both and it will be pure H-E double L for me
Oh, I wish that we could stop this D-I-V-O-R-C-E.

Watch him smile, he thinks it Christmas
Or his 5th Birthday
And he thinks C-U-S-T-O-D-Y spells fun or play
I spell out all the hurtin' words
And turn my head when I speak
'Cause I can't spell away this hurt
That's drippin' down my cheek.

Our D-I-V-O-R-C-E becomes final today
Me and little J-O-E will be goin' away
I love you both and it will be pure H-E double L for me
Oh, I wish that we could stop this D-I-V-O-R-C-E.

MORPHINE | Scratch

I was once sitting on top of the world
I really had things in my hand
But something went wrong I'm not sure what
And now I'm sitting here at home alone
People they want to give you free advice
Well that's something that I always try
But you get what you pay for that's what I say
And now I'm paying and paying and paying
I lost everything I had
I'm starting over from scratch
I lost everything I had
I'm starting over from scratch
Everything I wanted cooking on the stove
Everything I needed right in the home
I had the best thing you can have
You can have it you can have it now
I lost everything I had
I'm starting over from scratch
I lost everything I had
I'm starting over from scratch
It's just a fact (?)
Wiped that smile off my face
Put me down in my proper place
But the world just keeps on spinning around
And I'm still hanging around in this world
I lost everything I had
I'm starting over from scratch
I lost everything I had
I'm starting over from scratch

One of the best right here:

Somebody to Love- Queen

Can... anybody find be somebody to love?

Each morning I get up I die a little, can barely stand on my feet
Take a look in the mirror and cry
Lord, what you're doing to me
I have spent all my years in believing you
But I just can't get no relief Lord
Somebody (somebody) oooh somebody (somebody)
Can anybody find me somebody to love?

I work hard (he works hard) everyday of my life
I work till I ache my bones, at the end (at the end of the day)
I take home my hard earned pay all on my own
I get down (down) on my knees (knees)
And I start to pray
'Til the tears run down from my eyes
Lord somebody (somebody) oooh somebody (please)
Can anybody find me somebody to love?

Every day - I try and I try and I try -
But everybody wants to put me down
They say I'm going crazy, they say I got a lot of water in my brain
Got no common sense, (He's)I got nobody left to believe
Yeah - yeah yeah yeah Oooh
Somebody (somebody)
Can anybody find me somebody to love?(Anybody find me someone to love)
Got no feel I got no rhythm , I just keep losing my beat
(you just keep losing and losing) I'm OK I'm alright (he's alright)
I ain't gonna face no defeat, I just gotta get out of this prison cell
One day I'm gonna be free Lord

Find me somebody to love, find me somebody to love
Find me somebody to love, find me somebody to love
Find me somebody to love, find me somebody to love
Find me somebody to love, find me somebody to love
Find me somebody to love, find me somebody to love
Somebody, somebody, somebody, somebody, somebody
Find me somebody, find me somebody to love
Can anybody find me...
Somebody to love

Find me somebody to love, find me somebody to love
Find me somebody to love, find me find me find me
Find me somebody to love, Somebody to love
Find me somebody to love...
Find me, find me, find me

------------------
i can relate to this song sometimes.
Can anybody find me somebody to love?(

some useless info for ya; this song was written with Aretha in mind to sing it

Nick Drake Day Is done

When the day is done
Down to earth then sinks the sun
Along with everything that was lost and won
When the day is done.

When the day is done
Hope so much your race will be all run
Then you find you jumped the gun
Have to go back where you began
When the day is done.

When the night is cold
Some get by but some get old
Just to show lifes not made of gold
When the night is cold.

When the bird has flown
Got no-one to call your own
Got no place to call your home
When the bird has flown.

When the games been fought
You speed the ball across the court
Lost much sooner than you would have thought
Now the games been fought.

When the partys through
Seems so very sad for you
Didnt do the things you meant to do
Now theres no time to start anew
Now the partys through.

When the day is done
Down to earth then sinks the sun
Along with everything that was lost and won
When the day is done.

The Hockey Song - Stompin' Tom Connors

Hello out there, we're on the air.
It's Hockey Night tonight!
The tension grows and the whistle blows
and the puck goes down the ice.

The goalie jumps and the players bump
and the fans all go insane.
Someone roars and Bobby scores
at the good ol' hockey game.

Chorus
Oh, the good ol' hockey game
is the best game you can name
and the best game you can name
is the good ol' hockey game.

Oh the players dash with skates aflash,
the home team trails behind.
They grab the puck and go bursting up
down across the line.
They storm the crease like bumblebees,
they travel like a burnin' flame,
see them slide the puck inside,
it's a 1-1 hockey game.

Chorus

Oh take me where the hockey players
face off down the rink.
The Stanley Cup is all filled up
for the champs who win the drink.
With the final flick of a hockey stick
and one gigantic scream,
the puck is in, the home team wins
the good ol' hockey game!

Chorus

(Corb Lund adds another verse)

Well goodness me, Fox TV,
where did you get your sight?
Can't you keep track, the puck is black
that's why the ice is white.
That big red glare you see up there,
we'll we've seen that for years.
For goodness sakes, all it takes
is a couple dozen beers!

Chorus

At the minute i'm really into The Shins' oh inverted world. Got the album a few years ago, but never really listened to it much til I heard 'New Slang' in Garden State. Bit of a cross between Elliott Smith and Simon and Garfunkel via the Beach Boys. Awesome!

New Slang

Gold teeth and a curse for this town were all in my mouth.
Only, i don't know how they got out, dear.
Turn me back into the pet that i was when we met.
I was happier then with no mind-set.

And if you'd 'a took to me like
A gull takes to the wind.
Well, i'd 'a jumped from my tree
And i'd a danced like the king of the eyesores
And the rest of our lives would 'a fared well.

New slang when you notice the stripes, the dirt in your fries.
Hope it's right when you die, old and bony.
Dawn breaks like a bull through the hall,
Never should have called
But my head's to the wall and i'm lonely.

And if you'd 'a took to me like
A gull takes to the wind.
Well, i'd 'a jumped from my tree
And i'd a danced like the king of the eyesores
And the rest of our lives would 'a fared well.

God speed all the bakers at dawn may they all cut their thumbs,
And bleed into their buns 'till they melt away.

I'm looking in on the good life i might be doomed never to find.
Without a trust or flaming fields am i too dumb to refine?
And if you'd 'a took to me like
Well i'd a danced like the queen of the eyesores
And the rest of our lives would 'a fared well.
