I checked back 15 pages and couldn't find an original thread about this, so I figure it is long enough that I can make a new one without too much trouble.

Anyway, I saw this movie this weekend and I truly loved it. The acting, writing and direction were top notch. While it did drag in a few scenes (a scene involving dishes and one involving dancing is all I'll say) and I know the minimalist shakey-cam direction really frustrated some viewers, I appreciated it. This, much more than any mediocre piece of family-drama trite released these days (Family Stone, I'm looking at you), really gets you into this family. You share in their frustrations, hopes, sadness and boredom. And most of all the acting was all around top-notch. Anne Hathaway was far better in this than I realized she had reached to this point. I now may have to say she probably deserved best actress at the Oscars over Meryl's good, but not quite as searing performance in Doubt (I did not see The Reader nor have any intention to do so). I just really enjoyed this movie and feel it has gotten overlooked somewhat.

8/10.

What did others think?

I completely agree with you, save for the point of those two scenes dragging. I personally thought they were just fine.

The really great thing about this film was how everything and everyone flowed together. Much of the time, it didn't feel like actors and actresses. They were just family, period. Like I was watching a sometimes disturbing home movie.

I very much enjoyed it.
Fantastic performance by Hathaway, and also a great performance by the sister in the film, I don't remember her name.

Only part of the film i didn't like was
how the confrontation between Hathaways character and her mother was handled. It felt kinda out of place.

I'll give it an 8/10.

I really liked that confrontation as it is the one scene in the film that is left unresolved and for you to think about. The mother could be the callous woman who never cared about being a mother as her daughter suspects or she may have been in deep denial, as everyone in the film is, and was simply trying to find a way to force her daughter to not use drugs. In any case it is the one scene where characters say what they are thinking and without avoiding it to each other and in the same room...the results. Well the final scenes between the characters at the wedding were so sad that it looks never to be resolved. :(

Here's a copy of the review I posted in the "Last Movie Watched" thread:
Rachel Getting Married

I felt the film dragged a lot. The actors were great, and the script had it's highs and lows. I thought Jonathan Demme and Jenny Lumet did a great job of selling that all of these characters have extensive histories, beyond what was revealed on screen. For all the quality in the character development and acting, I could not for the life of me relate to anybody in the movie. I couldn't find myself emotionally invested in any of the lighter moments, and the dramatic moments just made me feel uncomfortable. However, since I know some of that has to do with personal preference and not an objective perspective, I will say this is a good movie that wasn't for me.

7/10

This movie is too good not get at least one bump.

I really enjoyed this movie, and i found myself getting all caught up in the character's emotions 110%. I thought the acting was amazing, even though Anne stands out, i thought the rest of the cast was outstanding too.

It was a powerful movie for me, it's the best movie i've seen so far this year. 9/10

Good movie. Not great, but good. A little heavy handed at times, but overall, pretty satisfying. Thought the dish-stacking sequence was pretty innovative, actually, even if the end of it was a bit forced. What the HELL was the point of fifteen minutes of dancing for? Was it all to illustrate how cut off she felt from everyone?
