Jake Gyllenhaal to Star in Ubisoft’s ‘The Division’ Movie

Following record-breaking sales, Ubisoft is already developing a movie based on its video game “Tom Clancy’s the Division,” and now looks to have an A-list star to lead the film.

Sources tell Variety that Jake Gyllenhaal is attached to star in the pic based on the hit video game that has already become Ubisoft’s fastest-selling product.

Gyllenhaal is also attached as a producer, and the studio is currently looking for a writer to pen the adaptation. Ubisoft could not be reached for comment.Developed and published by Ubisoft, with assistance from Red Storm Entertainment, for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, the third-person shooter is set in a dystopian New York City in the aftermath of a smallpox pandemic.

The player, who is an agent of the Strategic Homeland Division, commonly referred to as simply “The Division,” is tasked with helping to rebuild the Division’s operations in Manhattan, investigating the nature of the outbreak and combating criminal activity in its wake.

Early reports had the game reaching $330 million dollars in sales in just five days, and that number has surely grown in recent weeks. Ubisoft will package the project, possibly adding one more actor to the mix before taking it out to studios. It currently has “Assassin’s Creed” starring Michael Fassbender in post-production at Fox and New Regency as well as “Splinter Cell” starring Tom Hardy at Paramount.

For Gyllenhaal, the move gives the actor the opportunity to step into a major tentpole following several prestige projects such as “Nightcrawler,” “Southpaw” and the upcoming “Nocturnal Animals.” In producing the movie, Gyllenhaal will also have the ability to be hands-on in the big-budget film.

Gyllenhaal can next be seen starring opposite Amy Adams in Tom Ford’s “Nocturnal Animals,” scheduled to open Nov. 18, 2016.

He will commence production on Bong Joon Ho’s “Okja” and Daniel Espinosa’s “Life” later this year. Through his Nine Stories shingle, Gyllenhaal produced David Gordon Green’s upcoming “Stronger,” in which he also stars.

Jake Gyllenhaal starring in a movie based on a Ubisoft game, what could possibly go wrong. :o

i think this is great since ubisoft has been taking the marvel approach they created Ubisoft Motion Pictures a couple years ago and taking control of their own properties rather than handing it off to random studios and Assasins Creed is the first film under that division

the article says jake is a producer just like fassbender is a producer on AC he probably will have a say in the hiring process of director and writer

Don't forget Splinter Cell and Tom Hardy. He's been attached to that fora few years now.

ubisoft doubling down on the movie business huh?

for their sake I hope they can break the mold.

The Divison, Jake Gyllenhaal? Sign me up.

First Assassins Creed now The Division I like What Ubisoft do

^that was before ubisoft created ubisoft motion pictures which was created in 2011 POP came out in 2010

AC is the first film under that brand

Wasn't that impressed by the first trailer.

The way the first trailer of AC cut didn't allow you to really absorb what's going on. Plus the music was distracting, nothing against Kanyne. I would rather get another Kayne song that was more faster paced.

When you think about Assassin's Creed you don't want to think about Kanye West.

Not really. People kept saying it's due to being hip-hop and I don't think it is. Kayne is a polzaring figure even in rap; and that song was very sleepy in its tempo. You need something with energy.

Jessica Chastain in talks to join Jake Gyllenhaal in Ubisoft's 'The Division' http://thr.cm/7kOngn

Jessica Chastain is in negotiations to join Jake Gyllenhaal in The Division, Ubisoft Motion Pictures’ adaptation of its own hit video game.

Gyllenhaal is producing the project with Ubisoft’s Gerard Guillemot.

The storyline is set in dystopian New York City post a smallpox pandemic. In the third-person shooter game, the player is an agent of the Strategic Homeland Division, aka The Division, and it searching for the origins of the outbreak.

The studio is packaging the project before taking it to studios. It’s a process that has been effective for Ubisoft, which set up Assassin’s Creed starring Michael Fassbender at Fox and Regency (and now in post-production) and Splinter Cell with Tom Hardy at Paramount.

They are starting off strong with the casting.

well you cant say Ubisoft isn't going all out for talent they get Fassbender,Irons,Cotillard for Assassins Creed and now Gyllenhaal and Chastain for The Division

I approve of this.

played the game, story was a decent one and I think this could be an interesting movie adaptation.

“Gold” director Stephen Gaghan is attaching himself to write and direct Ubisoft’s adaptation of its popular video game “The Division” starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain.

Ubisoft Motion Pictures will develop with Gyllenhaal’s and Riva Marker’s (“Beasts of No Nation”) Nine Stories and Chastain’s Freckle Films.
Developed and published by Ubisoft, with assistance from Red Storm Entertainment, for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, the third-person shooter is set in a dystopian New York City in the aftermath of a smallpox pandemic. The player, who is an agent of the Strategic

Homeland Division, commonly referred to as simply “The Division,” is tasked with helping to rebuild the Division’s operations in Manhattan, investigating the nature of the outbreak and combating criminal activity in its wake.

Ubisoft will package the project, possibly adding one more actor to the mix before shopping it to studios. It currently has “Splinter Cell,” starring Tom Hardy, at Paramount.
“I’m excited to work with Ubisoft Motion Pictures and collaborate with their team at Massive Entertainment to bring ‘The Division’ to the big screen.

They’re great guys, exceptionally creative, and willing to take risks,” Gaghan said. “The game has been an enormous success, in large part due to the visual landscape they created, their vision of a mid-apocalyptic Manhattan. It’s immersive, wonderfully strange, and yet familiar, filled with possibilities.

It’s also remarkable to be able to collaborate with Jessica Chastain and Jake Gyllenhaal early in the process. We all feel the story Ubisoft created is more relevant than ever.”
Though he isn’t known for action-heavy tentpoles, the game does touch on global issues that would allow Gaghan to jump from that commentary to the intense setpieces that the game is known for.

Chastain is trying hard to become the movie star. Sadly, she will never be. It's better for her to stay in indie movies. That's where she belongs.

Wow. You couldn't be more shamelessly condescending to someone if you tried.

Plenty of people like Jessica Chastain.

I don't like your wording because it comes off as condescending in the most armchair way.

She is an acclaimed actress, not someone to go 'sho sho' at.
