    Happy Independence Day, Guest!

Superman Returns Umm.....Superman should've died from his fall....

Btw, when Supes was falling, did he not seem to have almost, and I repeat, almost a small smile on his face? I know it can be credited to him falling upside down for miles and miles or whatever, but to me it seems he has a slight smile on his face. Wonder if that was intended. I really need to listen to the commentaries...

I haven't listened to the commentaries yet, but does Singer explain how Supes was able to life NK into orbit when it was filled with kryptonite?
The only symbolism I can think of for that is the father doing it for his son.
It's kinda like when you read about some guy lifting a car off his kid or something like that. In both instances, the father with the car and Supes with NK, no he should not have been able to do it, but he did.
I'll give you an example: When I was in the police academy, we watched an in-car video of a cop pushing a car off of some railroad tracks just as the train cam barreling down on the car. In the car was an unconscious woman and a baby. What is so amazing about this video is the fact that in his hurry to get the car moved, HE FAILED TO TAKE THE CAR OUT OF PARK. That's right, he pushed the car with all four tires SLIDING across the pavement, not rolling. They had some physist guy say how much force it would hae taken in joules or watts or some crap like that to move the car in that condition, and he said it was impossible for a single man to generate that much force. When he watched the video, he was stunned. He still didn't see how it was possible, but admitted readily that he had just witnessed it happening.
Now, I know we are dealing with alien physiology, comic book science, etc, but I think that is what the writers were going for. When need be, ordinary men can rise to extraordinary heights, and the same can be said for Supes.

Thats a great story and also an excellent point about SR, we always hear story's about people doing things beyond their means in extreme situations, why should Superman be any different? Great great point NAV.

I dont think he did to be honest, i think he was just totally unconscious. But i could be wrong.

I agree,I think he was ''out of it"...

That whole sequence from lifting NK to him falling was very good. It was almost awe inspiring. My explanation for him lifting NK w/krypto in it is sheer will and determination. The fall back to earth was very good cinematic view. Just showed him doing that one last good deed before he bit the bullet.
The few reasons he survived are simple:

1.he was recharged by the sun, plus running on determination
2.Its a fictional movie, and they can make him do anything just like in a comic.
3.If he died they couldnt do a sequel!!!

Yeah, a de-powered Supes is still a powerful man
falling through the stratosphere would give him an excellent time to recharge.
I thought this would have been shown this way: Remember the whole "brown eyed Supes" thing when we see him at the farm the first morning?Well, I thought it could be shown this way...Supes wakes up back at home the first morning, and his eyes are BROWN. He goes out to greet the sunrise, and he appears weak, stumbling, even putting on a coat because he is cold. He picks up the baseball, and manages a weak dribble of a throw to the barn, and the dog fetches it and brings it back. He turns to face the sunrise, and the camera goes in tight on his face. Hold the frame. He closes his brown eyes as the sunlight starts to travel over his face. After about three seconds, he grins, opens his eyes, and they are now blue. He takes the ball from the dog, then throws it into orbit like he does in the movie.
MOst casual fans don't know that his power comes from the sun, this would have illustrated it better for the NK scene. I think that's where a lot of the confustion comes from

what I really don´t like is the fact that there is nothing in the movie to explain how he was healed. In fact, in the movie Superman seems to be dead when he arrives to hospital. This is the ressurection scene whith an obvious Jesus inspiration. Anyway I was waiting for some kind of explanation of this in the movie.

Again, we are dealing with comic-book science, and alien pysiology.
I would have liked to have seen him get out of the hospital bed, though.
A real tight shot of the floor beneath Supes' bed. You can just see at the top of fram the sheets stir and move. Two naked feet hit the floor, and the camera tracks them stumbling/shambling towards his costume. A closeup of the \S/ on the costume as a hand reaches out and grabs the costume. Close up on two feet now clad in the red boots. The camera pans up Supes' body slowly. At his midsection, the first eight notes of the classic Supes theme starts at 1/2 speed. Camera continues to pan up to slumped, rounded shoulders. No face shot yet. Supes turns to the window, pulls the curtain aside, and basks in the sunlight. From behind, at shoulder level, we see his head rise, his shoulders square up and become full. Break to the door opening as a nurse walks in. Break back to the window, and only a sliver of red is scene as Supes flies out.

What really bothered me was Supes skipping out on his hospital bill. WOldn't it be cool/corny/stupid if he got a collection letter in the sequel?

Go to the shot where Clark wakes up in the farmhouse the first morning. The straight-on shot has Routh sans lenses. His eyes are brown.

agreed. I mean from what it looked like Superman's plan was simple--get charged, and get NK out of there as quickly as possible.

I loved that to buy himself time he went deep underneath it to get a solid layer of dirt between him and the kryptonite and I liked that even though he did that he was still struggling to do it, still pushing himself to keep going. I agree with you because I think the point was that Superman was trying to push through the pain and weakness to save Earth. and like others have pointed out its not like he escaped with no harm: he passed out, his heart stopped completly, and even when he came back from that he was in a coma.

^ Absolutely. I think that this scene shows just how great the strength, courage and determination are within him. It is this inner strength that makes him the hero that he is, not the cape or flying. :super:

Agreed, i like how he burrowed underneath the island to try and get a shield of earth between him and it, but it still wasnt enough, so in the end he needed his own determination to pull through.
