Agreed, I think the three Underworld movies greatly surpass the three Blade movies, no doubt.

the only good blade movie was the first one... the other two were subpar.

the problem with blade is that there were humans in it

the underworld series barely has any humans at all...if any

Well, this was exactly what I expected...pure mediocrity, just like Underworld 1 and 2.
So sorry I wasted money on this.
Oh, and Blade 3 sucks, but Blade 1 and 2 are so much better than these movies, it'snot even funny.

I never understand this mode of thinking, if you didn't like the first 2, why pay to see the third?

Agreed, it's like me expressing my hate for romance comedies, and going to see one, expecting it to entertain me, when I hate those types of movies in general.

The Blade movies aren't better than the Underworld movies. Not in characterization, story, or action.

Quite easy.
I went with my friend and she wanted to see it.
One week I pick the movie, the other week she picks it, and so on and so on.
Nothing complicated, no "mode of thinking" or anything sinester like torturing myself with movies I don't like just mto whine abut them...just going to the movies with my friend.
We see good ones (Benjamin Button, The Wrestler, etc), and crappy ones (Bride wars, this one, etc) :)
Besides, I forgive her for everything cause she got me tickets to see The Dark Knight on IMAX ;)

Sorry, I've never payed money to watch a movie in a theater that I knew i was not going to like. I know people who do that kind of thing as well, just go to the movies and seeing something a week.

I go also because i like a movie. Every movie i see is set out from the start of the year. i Will see a sequel or prequel thats a given but i go based on if like the Trailer most.
Me and my friend have agood track record and every movie we see ends up worth teh price. In this case i saw Underworlds 1 and 2 in cinema so 3 is a given i will see tomarrow.

Blade 1>>>>Underworld 1, Blade 2=Underworld 2(Tie) Blade 3<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<Underworld 3.

I don't think he went because of that , his girlfriend wanted to see it .
I had to watch Journey to the center of the Earth 3-d and The Mummy : Dragon Emporer last year.

i thought the first two were decent but i don't really remember them and i'm not big on it .

Review:
Welcome to the most cut and dry Underworld of the trilogy. A prequel that eschews the convoluted intrigue of the first two films, gets down 'n dirty (furthermore bloody) by slamming claw against steel, and defies expectations. Carried by the performances of two seasoned actors and a first-time confident director familiar with the universe, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans is the best of the series, a rip-roarin' good time for fans eager to dig into this origin story that sheds light on the instigating factors behind the feud between the Lycans and the vampires.

To be honest, after seeing this, I'd say the bloodsuckers had it coming. When Lycans picks up - with a voiceover intro from not entirely absent Kate Beckinsale - the vampires are sitting cozy in a rugged, mountainside fortress (shades Lord of the Rings' Helm's Deep) under the reign of Viktor (Billy Nighy). Viktor fathers - at arm's length - the upbringing of Lucian the first Lycan, a man/beast hybrid who can transform at will. He enslaves the dutiful Lucian (Michael Sheen) and forces the young man to create more like him (a simple process of capture, bite, and collar, repeat). With an army of Lycans, the vampires can now use these creatures to do the grunt work and serve as guard dogs from the true werewolves that live in the surrounding woods. But, bearing shades of "Frankenstein," Viktor's runaway creation will ultimately turn on him.

Unbeknownst to Viktor, his daughter, Sonja (Rhona Mitra), has been shagging Lucian. This forbidden "Romeo & Juliet" affair, thankfully, isn't seen blossoming in Lycans - it's already happening. Nix the Twilight-esque courting process, Lucian and Sonja have no time for such shenanigans. When we first find Lucian sneaking beyond the confines of the castle walls, it's because he's off for a dangerous quickie with Sonja on a mountaintop. There's always bound to be eyes watching somewhere, however, and it isn't long before this relationship creates mucho conflict between Sonja and Viktor, then Viktor and Lucian...then Lucian's army and anyone who happens to sport a pair of fangs and wear cool battle armor.

Love, loss, revenge, triumph... It's well-tread ground but repackaged in the Underworld universe, it fits quite comfortably. It allows Tatopoulos and screenwriters Danny McBride, Dirk Blackman and Howard McCain to present what they've teased since the first film: A crowd of vampires and werewolves tearing each other apart. Of course that's the pay-off as Tatopoulos devises a number of brutal action set-pieces throughout the film to get you warmed up, from a werewolf sneak attack to a Lycan prison break during which the vampire Death Dealers turn their massive crossbows into the castle for a Wild Bunch-esque slaughter that finds prisoners being harpooned through the chest and face. When the big brawl comes, it is admittedly pretty cool to witness hundreds of werewolves charging into battle.

Without some advancement in the special effects, none of this would have worked and thankfully Tatopoulos and his team, on both the practical and CG front, pull it off. Ross Emery's photography captures the gloomy visual aesthetic of the series which, in fact, helps ease the digital-looking nature of the loping lycanthropes who, here, bound through the trees, burrow in the ground and scale rock walls. (Although I find it funny that during their "down time" they're just lounging around in a cave somewhere.) It should also be noted that, three films in, the "transformation" sequences have gotten much better as well.

As for the harmless, overwrought drama, all actors take to their characters with passion. Both Nighy and Sheen almost seem to be trying to outdo one another in regards to chewing up the scenery. The award goes to Nighy, however, who sells every line and lends Viktor some unexpected shades of weakness. Sheen, meanwhile, leaps back into the skin of Lucian with a wild-eyed glare and unwavering strength - even when he's taking a whipping that almost matches what Jim Caviezel suffered through in The Passion of the Christ (bet you didn't expect that to get mentioned here, did you?). Mitra's Sonja is a welcome addition to series. Stubborn. Sexy. A believable match for Lucian. And it's great to see the hulking Kevin Grevioux reprise his role as Raze, a dude who - before he becomes a Lycan - proves he can knock out a werewolf with his bare fists.

The production design is eye-catching and the attention to detail is to be commended. Tatopoulos succeeds in making Lycans look big. Without a doubt the team behind this latest entry knows the world inside and out and they've crafted an enjoyable living, breathing comic book-style romp. It still takes itself pretty seriously, but unlike the previous entries, you're not sitting through the action sequences preoccupied with trying to sort out the labyrinthine connections between all of the characters (a big flaw of Underworld: Evolution). Lycans whets the appetite for not more adventures of Selene and Michael Corvin (Beckinsale and Scott Speedman, respectively) but exploration of Lucian's journey. Furthermore, it launches what is hopefully a long directing career for Tatopoulos. This is an auspicious debut for the FX and production design vet.

I see the film has made $7,900,000 as of now. That's actually not a bad start, and I expect the movie to pick up speed as it goes along. Hopefully it'll be at about $26 million by Monday, if not more.

Sorry, I've never payed money to watch a movie in a theater that I knew i was not going to like. I know people who do that kind of thing as well, just go to the movies and seeing something a week.

Or they want to get laid. :woot:

My review...

Underworld 3 is an odd movie, where I liked the previous versions, this one is in my opinion the best one. I gotta say I thought it was pretty much the one I think all the monster mash Medieval Combat buffs are waiting for. No more gun-kata, which kinda lumped the film closer to the Matrix and Equilibrium than House of Frankenstein, or Bram Stokers Dracula. But you want to see strong and fast vampires with swords, arrows, and spinning blade things going against super strong pissed off immortal slaves that turn into Man-beasts. Hell, they even explain why there are two different breeds, and why they had such a departure with the design. Basically, if you seen the first movie you know the story, and how it ends. Not going to rehash the story, so I’ll be short and sweet.

Patrick Tatopoulos is as good a director as Len Wiseman, and actually does significantly better in parts. He even shot good battle scenes. Kudo’s to showing the Damage both species can inflict on each other. Nice decapitations, disembowelment's, and creative sex scenes. Everything looked pretty sharp, including the end with the cliff perched werewolves. I'm more of a "werewolf can take out a vampire easy" crowd, so I don't even mind the one sided-ness with some fights. I love werewolves, and finally we get an Underworld movie that does them justice. I would really see Tatopoulos do some other stuff, he has a great eye for action.

Rhona Mitra looked a lot better than Kate Beckinsale at points (more evil looking with the vamp eyes), and for the most part played the role not so wooden. The lips get kinda distracting though, but she’s not hard on the eyes in chainmail & Leather, or tied up. Yeah, she’s an ex Lara Croft model and Christian Troy tapping Carver Sister, but she worked well with Michael Sheen. They had the chemistry that Mikael and Selene lacked.

Speaking of Michael Sheen, he is one of the reasons I want another prequel- sequel. He was one of my favorite things about the first movie. I always liked the concept of an Elder Super Strong Werewolf King, and even though he looks all of 5’5” in some scenes, he looked f ing crazy in some scenes, like when he gets into toe to toe Lycanthrope staredowns and just kills vampires after Sonya gets executed Interview with the Vampire style. I would like to see him play more with the character, maybe in the 1800’s or early 20th.

And Bill Nighy, I don’t thing I need to say much, the guy just has to stare without blinking to look creepy. And the voice, the guy doesn’t have to do squat. He was perfect playing a Vampire King. And he plays into the action really well.

Overall, if you liked the first 2 films, you’ll see a great addition to the series. If your indifferent, maybe this one will work for you, maybe it wont. If you don’t like the first 2 films, why even bother reading this much of my review?

Anyhow, 8.5/10

Underworld 1- 7/10
Underworld: Evolution 8/10

Awesome review, Nivek, makes me want to watch the movie again. In any case, I think as far as Sheen is concerned, he really did prove he's ready for leading man, and could be a big action star. Lucian is one of my favorite characters out of everyone we've seen in these movies, because he's a strong leader, and that's what I like to see. Someone who doesn't look lame leading, giving orders, or kicking ass.

With Nighy, his vampire performance is the best I've seen yet. He was ruthless, gave the right amount of emotion when needed, and really made you go "Oh s***" a lot, at least for me. As for Mitra, I loved the lips, so that's why they were distracting for me, lol, but I think you meant in a different way.

I think this one is the best. The big reason is the bigger roles that Michael Sheen and Bill Nighy receive in this one compared to the others. The action is what I wanted out of the first one (more bloody brutal violence, no guns), and the story laid more of the perspective on the lycans, which I thought was slightly lacking before hand. It makes the others better for me too. Seeing the beginning of the war was very important and just completes it. It's not an unnecessary prequel.

I agree, it really gave more insight just as to how sick and cruel Viktor was.

The fact that he thinks he was like a father to Lucian even though he was a slave shows how twisted he was.
