I posted this on SCEE just a minute ago but it goes for everyone:

Be on the lookout for "PS3 Gamers Choice"

I got a message from a friend on PSN about it telling me to sign up etc. You'll be greeted with a message on the site saying:

"Here is the greatest gaming website of the 21st centuary. all you have to do is sign up and sign in you will receive $20 redeem code for your PSN ID The redeem code is free and there are no credit card details or as such to be entered. So please sign up and become a happy gamer of the 21st centuary."

Full of mistakes already.

You'll then see the sign up screen which asks for your actual email address and password to PSN.

"Please ensure the email and password you sign in with is the correct information
as it will be needed to add the funds to your PSN acount happy gaming GamersChoice Team"

So I made a new account to see how far they would take it. I gave them the info they wanted and waited. Suddenly, I was signed out as someone else had entered my account. So I proceeded to try to log in again only to find my password was incorrect.

I managed to change it back due to knowing the D.O.B. and secret question I entered. Obviously my friend wasn't as lucky and fell for the scam with his main account.

I questioned my "friend" though PSN by asking which game I had met him on. The answer was so far off it was unbelieveable.

Funny thing is... I've been blocked by the "friend" now

Sorry to hear about your friend, and sounds like you were close to getting in deep too. Honestly, I make a habit of never telling anyone my personal info unless it's face to face, or I KNOW it's official (such as if I call the electric company).

A good example is WoW. I saw tons of ppl giving out their name and passwords to 'friends' they 'met' online, and trusted them to help them with something. Then the 'friends' ended up taking everything off of their characters. The entire time I played WoW I never had a problem. I give my account to a guildmates friend (I did it so I couldn't come back to WoW lol), and within a week someone hacked my old account. I didn't care as I had given him the account so I couldn't come back to WoW, but it just shows how irresponsible some ppl are with personal info.

So yeah, even tho I like the ppl here and those I've met online...don't expect me to give out my PSN name and password to trade games or anything. I also don't give out info to random emails.

some folk are just scum bags...

Exactly, especially with the anonymity of the Internet, you can't really trust anyone you meet online. NEVER give out your personal info to ANYONE for ANYTHING.

I knew by the look of it that it was scam but like I said, I just wanted to see how far they would take it so I made an additional new account with no information on it.

It allowed me to see what they did first hand and pass the information on to a SCEE staff member who got their legal team on it straight away.

I'd never give out any information to anyone either. Given that I have spent a hell of a lot of money on the PSN my purchases would be there for anyone who got a hold of the information. Fortunately, I'm not an idiot like the other guy and never fell for their elaborate scheme.

On another note I can confirm that the site in question has been shut down but who's to say it wont pop up somewhere else?
