WHY would they speak with german accents?
This is pissing me off to no end. Though the actors are english speaking (it's a Hollywood movie, so of course) we all know that they are supposed to be speaking in german. Do you really need the german accent to validate this?

*Tom Cruise walks in*
Tom Cruise: What is this?
(OMG, I DON'T GET IT? WHERE IS HE FROM?!?!)
Tom Cruise: Wat iz deeez?
(Oh, there you go)

Its not so much the fact that they're not using German accents that bothers me, moreso Singers excuse that it would come off as "stupid".

Its almost like he's saying that the actors in his film aren't capable to perform with a convincing accent. As I mentioned before, there's more to acting then simply dressing the part.

Its a cop-out excuse...a lame one at that.

Maybe Singer should've cast Daniel Craig and Liev Schreiber...they seem to be pretty good with accents. :cwink:

It's not a cop out.
Having them use german accents WOULD be stupid. Either have them speak german or just don't bother with the accents.

I think it's better that they don't use German accents. They should have either spoken in German, or in English, but NOT with an accent. Making them speak English, says that it was obviously done so we could understand them, but making them speak with an accent, seems stupid to me, because it's like the German characters in the movie speak English and that wouldn't really make any sense.

This is a thriller, fast paced (though I don't know the runtime) It wouldn't really make sense for them to use the accents, runnign around, potting to kill Hitler and ****. And it would come off as silly.

So you're telling me that you think that Branagh, Stamp, Wilkinson and Nighy aren't good actors.
And tell me, do you think that Viggo Mortensen, Mark Strong and Jason Isaacs are good actors?

I think they should've used accents but ultimately this will not ruin the viewing experience to me.

I think its possible that Singer worried having a movie with nothing but german accents may have been a harder sell to the GA.

I dunno where you're going with this, but Viggo Mortensen is a quality actor.

And btw, why do people want the accents? whats so appealing about it?

People are misinterpreting my issue with it.

Its not so much the fact that they're not using accents in the film, moreso than it is the fact that Singer thinks that would be "stupid".

Granted, using German accents would be tough but it is of my personal opinion that with so many quality actors in the film, it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility for them to perform their roles with German accents and NOT sound stupid.

Daniel Craig and Liev Sheriber in that Defiance trailer I posted, are very good actors and perform with very convincing Russian accents. Do they come off as stupid? Not to me...

And sure, you got those who say, "its stupid if you use German accents but have them speak english, etc." and to many people it is.

BUT FOR ME, it definitely adds to the performance...

Singer honestly couldn't get actors that could convincingly pull off German accents?

Epic fail.
Curiously enough, nobody seems to mind that the teenage protagonist in Slumdog Millionaire has an American accent, even though he his brother has a Hindi accent, the character himself had a Hindi accent as a child, and the actor is British. :funny:

It was something that occurred to me a day after I had seen the movie. :funny:

hmmm we will see. i was expecting more hype for this movie. on the level of benjamin button or milk.
I think the Oscar hype died the same way it died for The Reader, although Kate Winslet's performance is still pulling The Reader along. Problems with release date spread the overall bad vibe for the film (as with The Reader), but Valkyrie also had filming problems in Germany and budget problems and reshoots.

Granted, production problems don't always kill a movie (coughTitaniccough), but they certainly don't help.

I think it's more important that on Rotten Tomatoes it rates only a 63% on the tomatometer and has an average critic rating of only 5.8/10. Granted there have been only eight reviews, but it doesn't help when the early story is that critics don't think it's that great of a movie.

lmao @ the fact that people are complaining about the accents.

I mentioned Viggo because in "Good" he, Mark Strong and Jason isaacs acts as german people during the nazi period and none of them uses tha fake German accent.

So who's seen the movie? I did, along with a packed theater. I absolutely loved it. Very engaging, very emotional , VERY good. The perfect Chanukah movie :D.

I had a movie day and saw The Spirit, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and this. This was the first I saw actually.

This movie was excellent. My screen was totally sold out and packed. Tom Cruise did a great job with this, and further validates that he's one of my favorite actors (despite his personal life). Holy hell, Valkyrie has one of the most impressive casts in a movie all year. Bernard Hill, Tom Wilkinson, Terrance Stamp, Bill Nighy, all pretty damn impressive. The movie was pretty suspenseful, too. I was holding my breath throughout the entire movie even though we already know the outcome. The ending was pretty touching, too. All in all, excellent movie.

Oh, and anyone who says this movie sucks because of the lack of German accents? You're a ****ing idiot and I saw **** you.

Plus Singer had a great way of getting beyond the accents by fading the dialect from German into English. So YES, you get to hear Tom Cruise speak German.

Did Terrence Stamp try to get Hitler to "KNEEL BEFORE BECK!"? It is a Bryan Singer movie after all! :woot:

This movie was just not very well done. I didn't have a very big problem with the acting or lack of German accents like I thought I would. It surprised me because people keep talking about how fast-paced it is... I thought it was actually slow. I got really bored in a few parts. :down

Very well done. A good comeback movie for Singer after Superman Returns.

Tom Cruise did OK. I mean he was Tom Cruise, but he wasn't as bad as some of the early critics and reviews were making him out to be.

The Spirit on the otherhand was terrible and almost unwatchable.
