Vegas shooting

*politicians offer thoughts and prayers*
*demands for change in gun laws arise*
*GOP politicians fume about "politicizing" shooting*
*the whole conversation gets tabled until the next shooting four days later*

It's exhausting and infuriating, and it's insane that we are so goddamn divided that we can't even approach anything resembling a consensus about this.

You forgot the NRA privately celebrating, because they know gun sales are going to skyrocket.

People who are going to commit crimes like this will find a way to obtain the means to do so. Regardless of what kind of laws we put in place to prohibit guns and other things. I always knew this was going to happen eventually. Las Vegas is a tourist trap, full of crowds and bustling activity and an easy target to attack people in good numbers. It sucks...but i'm not shocked it happened. Maybe surprised its happened tonight...but this was always going to happen. And it'll happen again too, these kind of attacks aren't going anywhere.

And yet we don't have to make it so remarkably easy for them to do so.

Also while there are other means of attack, guns are remarkably efficient. The failrate for bombs is much higher. Car and stabbing attacks are much more survivable.

The terribly evergreen Onion headline says it all.

"No way to prevent this, says only nation where this type of thing regularly happens."

Another terrible tragedy.

Problem is, it's too late to ban guns now anyway. There are more guns in circulation than there are people. There is something deeply wrong with the culture and mentality. It's not about self defense for a lot of people, although the media and government wants people to be scared and paranoid. It's almost about having a cool fashion accessory. You see so many dick heads with customised, pimped out guns and I'm just like... really?

Obviously it should be made much, much more difficult to get a gun, especially assault weapons. But at the end of the day it's so ingrained into the culture that stricter laws will always be opposed.

Let's see how the Cheeto handles this.

Update: 50 killed and 200 injured :(

It was almost certainly a weapon to which no civilian should have access. From all of the descriptions, the firing went on for an extended period of time from a "military style" (according to police) weapon.

My prayers for Vegas. The scene sounds like something out of a nightmare.

Jesus, now 50 dead and 200 hundred injured. Apparently he was shooting for several minutes nonstop...

Years ago, 20 fatalities would be considered unimaginable, then 30, then 40, now 50 (at minimum). How high does the figure have to go before something, even at the most basic level, is done Federally about gun control?

I know, there are more guns than people in circulation - what I'm referring to is things like restricting the kind of guns you can buy, how much ammo you can purchase, etc.

How the **** was no one able to take him down for that long?

so how long before the shooter starts getting excuses made for him, that he was a quiet old man, he felt threatened, he lost his job you know the usual fkn bull they spout when it's this crap

Why isn't this considered terrorism? I mean wasn't the goal of the shooter to create terror for his victims?

Isn't Las Vegas an open-carry jurisdiction? I recall all the anti-gun control fanatics & NRA loyalists/extremists repeatedly saying that a well-armed society is key to stopping and/or deterring mass shootings like this. Evidently this philosophy once again did not seem to work here, as Stephen Paddock was apparently shooting non-stop for several minutes.

It's too early to say, but yes it does look like terrorism as a lot went into planning it (just from reading initial reports).

Let me just call it like it is - if the shooter wasn't white and was black or of dark-skin complexion, the headlines all across Western media, particularly right-wing outlets, would be labelling it a terrorist attack even before all the facts are in. They would be calling it terrorism within minutes.

The clown just tweeted, and in the manner we all predicted. He probably went back to sleep after realizing it was a white non-Muslim shooter.

Oh jeeze. What did he say now?

His response was fairly reasonable.

I'm going to say something that might sound horrible, but I actually kind of hope this event eventually leaves the public's mind fairly soon.

Lets be honest about this; nothing is going to happen. There will be debate as there always is, congress will hee and haw, then do nothing and everyone will forget until the next one. The only thing thats going to happen is the NRA will exploit this tragedy to say "LOOK OUT EVERYONE!! THEY ARE GOING TO TAKE AWAY YOUR GUNS!!!!" and gun sales will skyrocket like they do for every shooting. Controversy only helps the NRA.

Oh hell, 400+ people taken to hospitals

Shooter was using a drum mag which can hold up to a 100 rounds.
Atleast 50 dead and 400 injured! By one shooter..

Can't imagine that when they wrote the 2nd amendment they knew this kind of WMd's would be readily available to every idiot with an IQ of ten. Solely for hunting purposes in densely populated areas.
