Universal is Remaking Cronenberg's Videodrome
Source: Variety April 26, 2009

Universal Pictures is developing a remake of the 1983 David Cronenberg-directed thriller Videodrome. Ehren Kruger will write the script and produce with partner Daniel Bobker.

The trade adds that Universal distributed the original and had first refusal on a remake, and the studio snapped up the opportunity from Canadian distribution veteran Rene Malo, who will be executive producer.

The original starred James Woods as the head of Civic TV Channel 83, who makes his station relevant by programming "Videodrome," a series that depicts torture and murder that transfixes viewers.

According to Variety, the update "will modernize the concept, infuse it with the possibilities of nano-technology and blow it up into a large-scale sci-fi action thriller."

what's the point?

The original movie was so unmainstream and artsy; and classic Cronenberg. Seriously.

Bound to happen eventually, just like an Exorcist remake...

Whoever remakes this will never be able to even come close to what Cronenberg did.

I seriously wish Hollywood would only remake the movies that deserve remakes...the bad ones.

Unusual decision to pick this movie to remake but hey I thought hollywood was nuts years ago

This.

Most stupid remake ever?

Sadly, in these times (or 'the age of the redundant remake' as I call them) I fear there will be a lot of movies vying for that title.

It's getting worse. It really is. Originality is being squeezed out by the need to score a 'safe' buck.

Jeezus Hollywood Enough. Come up with some orginality at least.

Originality is a dirty word in Hollywood nowadays - it's more commonly associated with risk, and therefore, potential loss of revenue.

It's just so ****ing sad.

This line makes me believe that this will be a bastardization beyond all bastardizations.

I haven't even seen the original but I know you don't remake Cronenberg!

But Cronenberg is allowed to do remakes himself? Thats a bit unfair...

If any Cronenberg movie should get a remake, it should be Rapid or maybe The Brood.

Agreed. Out of al the Cronenberg movies to remake, why this one? If they chose something like 'eXistenZe' or 'The Dead Zone, then yeah, but 'Videodrome'? It's one of the most uncommercial movies ever. He has a vagina in his stomach for crying out loud!

it's so strange to remake a movie where the original director is still actively working.

is this even possible?

but he envisioned a whole new The Fly.... he listens to you we don't know Goldblum like we do now.

Cronenberg doesn't do remakes....

"Videodrome" is one of my all time favorite films...and since this thing won't affect how I feel about the original, I couldn't give two s**ts if they remake it. I just won't see it.

However, I will chyme in and say that the idea of modernizing it with today's technolgoy just sounds dumb...there's a quaintness to the original that will be absolutely lost if they contemporize it.

And no actress...NO ACTRESS...will top Deborah Harry.

See that's the only real issue I've ever had with remakes. I know they don't affect the original and that's fine.

But since they can't possibly hope to be better than the original (not these anyway, remakes of classics) then why bother in the first place?

Yeah...just remake s**tty films (good concept, poor execution)...but if it's a classic already, leave it be.
