I hope someone here knows what I'm talking about, because I'm about at my wit's end.

Yesterday I was infected with something that calls itself Vista Internet Security 2010. It constantly pops up telling me all kinds of infections, running virus scans, etc., and the biggest problem is it wouldn't let me online because whenever I clicked Internet Explorer, "Vista Internet Security 2010" said Internet Explorer was infected with a virus and it had blocked it from accessing the internet.

Well I googled Vista Internet Security 2010 (on another computer, since it is blocking me from accessing the internet on my laptop) and found out that it is actually a virus itself posing as an anti-virus security program.

Tech forums I browsed suggested downloading anti-malware and Spy Doctor. I did both, neither killed the virus. I still get incessant pop ups, and I still can't access Internet Explorer.

Today I tried system restore to a couple days ago. This did nothing to the virus and now, whether because of something I did or the virus, Internet Explorer acts like it doesn't even exist anymore when I try to click on it.

The name of the program is "ave.exe", but I can't find it to delete. It says it's located in a certain folder, but when I go to that folder I can't find it anywhere, nor anywhere else. The anti-spyware programs I downloaded deleted a few other spywares and infections but did not get "Vista Internet Security 2010".

At this point I am typing this in my campus computer lab. My laptop has incessant pop-ups and "running virus scans" which I assume is fake, and Internet Explorer is nonfunctioning.

Schlosser,

Your in luck! My wife computer had it, and it isn't very nice. =D

Here is a link to help you out:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-antivirus-vista-2010

This is the method I used for my other half's, with the USB drive and the Registry fix. She did have it lock up, so you might need to do a short scan before you do a long one, but I think her computer is half borked anyways.

I know you went to some tech sites, but if you have too, try manually move it from registry, and do ALL this in safe mode before you resort to manually deleting from the registry! If you still have problems, let us know!

Alistair,

Thanks for the suggestion, but I already downloaded the program it suggests and it didn't eliminate it. :csad:

My ex's aunt apparently has the same thing and she's downloaded every kind of anti virus she can think of and it's still there.

If you can pull the drive and slave it then you can get rid of most of it. Remove the drive and connect it to an external drive device. Run malwarebytes and superantispyware full updated scans on the drive. You may have to run it multiple times. Put the drive back in the desktop or laptop and boot into safemode and run them again. keep running them until they both have clean scans.

I had trouble with that POS virus about a week ago. What I did was used System restore twice and downloaded Spybot and Malwarebytes after that.

Ok, good news and bad news.

The good news is....after running a full anti-malware scan twice, it seems *fingers crossed* to be gone.

The bad news is, it seems to have taken Internet Explorer with it.

When I try to click IE, it says "the program is either not designed to run with Windows or contains an error" and suggests I try reinstalling it.

Soooo....suggestions? Uninstall Internet Explorer and reinstall it?

Schlosser,

Glad to hear it, but personally, I would toss IE in the trash bin and use Firefox or Chrome. =)
